This came up on my mp3 player today whilst driving down to Bath.

I'd forgotten how good it is and then it appears here as well. Coincidence...?

Nah. I am clearly infiltrating your mind and life! :o

I've just realised I have boxes of old tapes and mini discs where I used to put my favourites singles of the year on come xmas time, so I can probably actually work out what would have been my number 1s retroactively with some pretty solid accuracy as far back as around '86 by checking the release dates, chart entries and my memory of what I loved most. That's given me a mission as much for my own curiosity as anything else.

Oh you should totally do this.

I'd love to know what you used to like back then, I imagine it would be so far removed from what I did that I could find some great tracks.

What, again??

I think I shall and hopefully you'll find some good stuff but there may be some shockers too...

How old are you Severin? I'm only asking as I've always assumed you're roughly my age and thus would be interesting to compare tastes at the same time.

015|04:11:90|Kim Appleby 'Don't Worry'

 I have no excuses, I apologise now. I think if my chart had started a year or two earlier then you would already have been submitted to lots of this sort of thing, PWL tracks were massive among my age group.

UK Chart peak: #2

Do I still listen to it? HELL YES. Actually, no I don't but listening to the youtube clip just now made me laugh quite a lot. :D

Oh dear :(

If you ask nicely I might try to find youtube versions of some of the songs I liked when I first started choosing my own music

Moving on very quickly from the last one, let's return to something that is actually good. I actually prefer this version to the original now and think it was a very good update of a classic. This was the beginning of my love for The Cure, they've had so many great tracks over the years and are now one of my all time favourite groups.

Do I still listen to it? Yes, it's amazing and they are regulars chez Dand.

017|25:11:90|The Beautiful South 'My Book'

Back to another act who've already appeared, I loved this and was utterly heartbroken when it didn't chart on the radio 1 top 40. Back then there was no such thing as midweeks etc so I listened to the whole show thinking it must be still to come all the way until we got to #1 and it hadn't appeared. :( Bad UK record buying public.

I think I'm a little older - 38, but certainly there'll be some crossovers in taste

018|30:12:90|Enigma 'Sadeness Part I'

This is why I used to love the charts back then, songs like this could actually do well in the UK. Let's face it, these days singles hardly ever do well unless they fit a certain genre that's 'cool' at the time where as in 1991 a gregorian chant record could make it all the way to #1 and nobody thought it was remotely odd. I still love this now, in fact I still quite like Enigma in general as they make fantastic going to sleep music.

UK Chart peak: #1

Do I still listen to it? I listened to it just last night and had a great night's sleep as a result!

Oh for the days when left-field songs like this could make number one

019|27:01:91|Jesus Jones 'International Bright Young Thing'

Continuing the bouncing around of genres that was my 90s, next up are Jesus Jones who probably join EMF and The Farm as lucky sods who somehow happened to be around in the early 90s and bad vocals and a bouncy beat was in. They're quite a fun band actually, I remember really rather liking all of the singles from their album. I imagine either Suedehead or Severin may have bought it, is it worth me getting?

UK Chart peak: #7

Do I still listen to it? No, haven't heard it in over a decade. I did enjoy it though so maybe it's time for a JJ revival! :o

IBYT was the only Jesus Jones single I bought but they were a decent enough band. Not as good as EMF though.

020|03:02:91|The KLF '3AM Eternal'

This was probably my first real foray into dance music and definitely the first song I remember buying that my mum thought was a total racket. They had an amazing 1991 and this topped the charts after What Time Is Love had set their stall out in 1990, my favourite of theirs is still to come though...

UK Chart peak: #1

Do I still listen to it? Yes, their The White Room album is always a fun listen when you're in the right mood.

I think my parents thought just about everything I bought was a racket  Bill Drummond, where are you in our hour of need?
