Why do people even watch X Factor? I dont get the appeal? Its just 12 second rate singers singing really bad cover versions. And its on Saturday nights when Im usually not in

Quite right. X Factor used to be good. Now it's absolutely shocking. And that auto-tune scandal!

X Factor is good as throwaway entertainment but as for long terms careers, well it doesn't seem to be sustainable, even Leona is struggling.

I feel around September/October to December of the year, the charts seem to appeal more to the X Factor fans, rather than the normal fans of chart music (if you get what I'm saying).

That said, I don't feel the thought of saying they are ruining the charts, or not ruining them. It can be a pretty exciting part of the year.

But I see Must Be The Music is taking over (I'm loving this actually!). I hope they knock most of the "X Factor-powered" stuff out of taking over the sales charts in few years time, we don't need them anymore (though as if we needed them in the first place though).

Anyway, about Olly getting to #1, it won't bother me much, but I prefer Katy's track way more (at least she can still get the #1 album next week. LOL).

Do people not realise that the auto-tunethis was just to create a buzz about the show as it has just started? They knew what they were doing. And it worked, and now people are still talking cos of the crazy Mercy lady.

Its all about getting viewrs.

The thing about x facotr is it boost sales in general, even though artists who get to perform on it get a big boost so does a lot of the chart as sales in general go up.

I stopped watching half way through the live shows last year cos of the crap that was Jedward. That was the point wher i knew this programme is a joke but i have been sucked in again this year.

I don't think it was a publicity stunt ;/ Apparantely, US XF bosses are not happy over the auto-tune...

'Happy' on its second week fell to freaking number 8 and it could be a 1-8 chart-run if it wasn't for BEPs performing the same day

It won't make 'Happy' more successful, LOL, but it didn't fall 2-8 was 2-4 :P

Now regarding the topic...

I don't think it ruins the charts, the charts are the reflection of what people wanted to buy.

It doesn't matter if the songs were performed on the x factor. They would be performed somewhere else, wouldn't they?

Or they are guilty for making a successful TV show?

And for the x factor acts, the same thing... People will choose what they want to buy or not, as it is for every other artist.

Then the "damage" on the charts, will only depend of our personal tastes ;)

Have a look in your CDs, see how many X-Factor winners and / or tie-ins you have and then think back to the last time you listened to them. Then ask yourself the same question again.

The charts are just a barometer of what's popular and this has always been manipulated by those with the money to do it.

No one if forced to watch X-factor or buy any X-factor related songs. The hate for it is so British to always build something up to knock it down. What harm does it do-none.The Music industry has been in a slump for a number of years in terms of sales so to finallly see an upward swing in pop music and digital sales is a good thing.

I do not see the same stuffy and snobbish attitude to American Idol winners. Kelly Clarkson, Adam Lambert, Fantasia, Jordin Sparks do not get the same contempt or hate that is levelled at UK entrants in the US or here.

Every X-factor act performed last year on the show with its main competition but all had leads on itunes before they performed.Fair enough Alex and JLS performed twice but it was clearly the highlight of the 2009 final. The charts have always had novelty songs, contestant winners (Lena Zavaroni, Sheena Easton), football songs, gimmicky tunes. Songs that are sneered at but are popular which is what the charts will always reflect.

To be honest American Idol doesn't take over the US charts like the $h!t that is X Factor artists.

Over there also if you release $h!t material it will flop. Kelly has had to work hard on her career and has had many ups and downs any success she has had bar her first single has been down to her own merit. Also if you notice recently all American Idol related tracks flop. America has a different perspective than we do with these competitions in that the country doesn't follow it and obsess over it for four months of their life a year.

If the US singles marker was based purely on sales American idol winners would do a lot better, they just don't get the airplay now they need to get a hit on the singles chart

I would say America does obsess with American Idol - don't they averagely get between 20-30 million viewers? And the final can attract 70-90 million.

The difference is, because American charts are based on Airplay AND Sales - the sales might be high but it won't be enough if the Airplay isn't

During American Idol the American press, media and entertainment channels do obsess about it.I was not talking about the difference in how well the singles of the acts do chart wise.I mean there is a huge difference in how the winners and acts are viewed. In America it is natural to support those who aim high and want success, the British attitude is to knock everything and pull people down.

The real issue for both shows is what someone pointed out the inability to create long term success and sustain the careers of the acts they have.Sadly both Leona and Alex are too good for Syco.
