Government plans which could make highly performing secondary schools allocate places to pupils of mixed abilities have been slammed by Tory MEP Roger Helmer. According to Mr Helmer, the children of middle class parents are the most intelligent and should thus go to the best schools.

Roger-HelmerHelmer wrote:

“Bright parents tend to have bright kids, and able people tend to achieve in life and to gravitate towards the middle classes. Thus a preponderance of middle-class children in good schools is evidence, not of “unfairness”, but of heritable intelligence.

“Schools that over the years build a reputation and achieve good results will attract both the ablest pupils and the best teachers – teachers who want to spend time enthusing children with a love of knowledge, not trying to exercise a semblance of discipline over a bunch of feckless ne’er-do-wells.”

It is not only his views on children that have got him noticed. As Left Foot Forward has reported before, Mr Helmer has a rather unsavory history: criticising charity money going to gypsy children, denying climate change and previously denying that homophobia does not exist.

If the truth be known ... deep under the skin ... this is what all Tories think. I think he's a twat but I applaud him for his honesty.

I can't wait to see what Craig has to say.

I'm not entirely convinced that it wasn't Craig who wrote that article in the first place.

I can't wait to see what Craig has to say.

He was expressing a personal opinion, his opinion is not a reflection of government policy nor does he have any influence over government policy so I fail to see how he is speaking for the tory party at large, Cameron sends his kids to a state school for example.

Saying that he is representative of all tories is like saying all blacks are muggers or all muslims are terrorists.

I don't endorse what he is saying but his ideas will never become government policy

I know, I was just wondering whether you'd agree or not :P You seem to fiercely defend basically anything the Tories do nowadays, so...

I have been critical of many things the tories do, my 100 day report was anything but a glowing endorsement ;)

I do not particularly agree with what he is saying, undoubtedly there are a lot of kids that don't want to learn and from my own experience at school that can heavily disrupt those that want to, I for one would like to see the law changed so that people can leave school at 14 if they go to college / work to learn a trade (plastering, motor mechanics or whatever) so that education is left to those that want to learn

But I dont for one minute believe that middle class kids are smarter and more intelligent than working class kids in a lot of cases

Roger Helmer..?

He should change his name to "Himmler".... Fukkin' c'unt.... <_<

But then, he's just a typical Tory scumbag, favouring the upper and middle-class over the working classes and the poor...

I voted for Tories. I stand by it

You stand by what he thinks of the poor? Well as I said ... you're a typical Tory.

Wasted votes which would lead to a hung parliament, like now

Clearly not a wasted vote given they're in government!

That's just utter $h!t.

My high school and the one in St Andrews have students from a vast mix of backgrounds from poor to the quite well off and the grades that the two schools get are pretty good. My high school was above the countries average ^_^

Of course the guy is talking bollocks. However at the end of the day ... a kid coming out of Eton with five grade 'C's is going to do infinitely better in life than a kid coming out of 'St Elsewhere, High Wycombe' with 15 A*s.

It's a shame you can buy a place at a good uni by going to a twatty high school.

Sadly this is true. I do believe that Cameron was hardly one of the brightest buttons on the uniform at his school ... but money talks ... and of course if you have the 'old school tie' to go with the money ... even better.
