Brilliant for these tracks. Glad Bruno Mars managed to top the US chart - actually thought he's get there last week.

Excellent for Rihanna - will be interesting to see if Rihanna sustains her sales and perhaps gets to no. 1 in the next fortnight?

Florence. Mumford & Sons, Yolanda

I was hoping that Florence would go top 10 after it peaked at (#3?) on iTunes :( But I guess it's sales probably dropped off quickly after that, and I doubt she had much airplay, if any at all.
Some 5 years ago, British and American were so different from each other. These days it's pretty the same chart for both. Shame :(

I do hope you're joking. 5 years ago it was so heavily US hip-hop/R&B dominated that bugger all these got a look in, at least it's more varied now.

Totally agree with Silver Rocket, if anything the US charts have improved since the additon of downloads - it also speaks volumes when the US singles chart is more interesting than the UK chart (which has been the case for most of 2010 when you consider the US #1 hits this year).

In 2005, a British act like Florence & The Machine would've been lucky to reach #21 in the Bubbling Under chart, yet alone the actual official chart.

So happy for We No Speak Americano. I'm happy for the US too, now that they're buying better music.

we no speak americano? good music?

are you being serious?! :P

actually there is now more pop in the US charts than there is in the UK Charts, which would've sounded very weird in 2002!!!!

Don't you think the US charts are now more reflective of what Americans actually like listening to? When airplay dominated the US charts and we had absolute $h!te like 'Laffy Taffy' going to no. 1, can you seriously say that was one of the most popular songs in the US at the time?

For eg; Britney Spears soared to no. 1 with '3' last year. Had there been downloads in 2004, I'm convinced a track like 'Toxic' would've peaked a lot higher than #9. Airplay destroyed the US charts last decade.

Laffy Taffy did sell very well too though

I liked the mid-00s when there were long running no. 1's. Although over 6 months of Usher was too much but hey, Black Eyed Peas almost did that last year too. So I don't know which one is better.

When airplay dominated the true trash was kept out of Top 5 but on the other hand r&b/hip hop were the winning genres.

?? No there isn't. The UK is almost a pop and urban lockout right now. Whole top 5 in the UK is pop and at least half the top 40. I would say overall they're about the same in terms of variety of musical genres. UK has a bit more dance, mind, and the US has more alternative...

Anyway, the US charts are getting better but until airplay is removed it'll still never be good. It makes the whole chart so god damn rigid. It's embarrassing how long some songs take to take off there (see: I Like It).

He's just bitching because he doesn't consider anything other than Xenomania/Kylie etc. to be true 'pop'...

I think the US and UK charts are equally varied...

However, the UK are much less xenophobic. Only 7 entries on the Hot 100 are led by artists hailing from countries that are not Canada, the UK or the USA. On the current UK top 100 there are 18 such songs (or 19 if you count Iyaz - So Big)
