The 'Glee' panel at the Summer 2010 TCAs

In the final Fox panel of the day, Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, and members of 'Glee's' production crew gave a behind-the-scenes look at what it took to put together an episode of last season's most successful new show. Some news that came out of the panel:

-- We already know that there will be a Britney Spears-themed episode, but according to Murphy, the post Super-Bowl episode will also have a theme; they're still negotiating with the artist they'll be featuring, so he couldn't reveal the name as yet.

-- One of the swag items we got was the novel 'Glee: The Beginning.' We also found out that Sue Sylvester will be writing her autobiography... which will come out as a real book. Jane Lynch will go on a short book tour as Sue.

-- In one episode in the latter half of the season, the kids will be assigned to write their own songs. So for the first time, original music will be commissioned for the show.

-- In general, Murphy feels the need to step back a bit and not give into the temptation to jam-pack every episode with story in season 2. As a result, you'll see more stories about the secondary characters. Yes, that includes the largely silent Mike Chang.

-- Murphy acknowledged that he "blew out" the last set of episodes after the winter hiatus, because they were paired up with 'American Idol.' The Madonna episode itself had nine musical numbers. They'll scale back to five to six musical numbers per episode in season two.

-- 'So You Think You Can Dance' vet Adam Shankman will direct an episode, and Murphy is hoping to get Joss Whedon back to direct another episode after Whedon is done working on his current movie project. "It's great for the kids; they like working with people whose work they admire," said Murphy.

-- The theme of the season premiere will be "auditions," explaining how we all feel like we're auditioning in all parts of life. The third episode will revolve around the various characters' takes on faith.

-- Murphy was "humbled" by all the attention the show got last season, and he said that, after the "big O" weekend where they met both Oprah and President Obama, "I had a meeting with the kids in my office and went around the room and said where we were all working a year ago. So they got back to who they were and what they were doing and why they're doing the work. They're sweet kids and they got sucked into something that they didn't think would get so big."

-- In general, Murphy wants the show to "stay true to the high school experience. I don't want to see them flashing forward five years and the kids are all living in the same condo complex." But he does have the show's first four years mapped out.

-- Finally, one critic asked who the guy was who plays the piano during all the musical numbers. Brad Ellis actually played piano for each of the kids' auditions. "His only direction (from me) was, 'You hate these kids,'" Murphy said.
