The remake of this cult classic is said to be good and very well made and a big improvement on the original. A woman's raped by several men so goes on a killing spree to exact revenge upon them. I remember seeing the original on a pirate grainy VHS as it was banned for years. Most memorable scene besides the rape is of her cutting of one of the men's penises in the bath after pretending to seduce him. It was censored both for cinema and video/DVD and has in fact never been available publicly anywhere fully uncut. Now there's a row over the new version which will lead to delay of it's UK release. The version submitted to the BBFC is said to contain a much too graphic rape scene even for an 18 Cert. and censors want heavy cuts which the makers aren't happy about.

Hope we get to see it soon as it's out in America next week.

This is why I hate Hollywood for the most part. Complete lack of new ideas or imagination.

I don't find any serious reason for removing such scenes. It's the type of movie and the demand of the story ask for such shots.

I agree. Such censorship has no real place these days.

Indeed. I hardly ever go to the cinema for that very reason. It particularly irritates me when they remake a foreign film, usually relocating it to the US at the same time. What makes it worse is that they're probably right to assume that a lot of people won't go to the cinema to see a subtitled film.

The original is a pretty vulgar and unpleasant watch, I shudder to think what the remake is like.... -_-

And, seriously, WTF is the BBFC on about? There is no rape scene in film EVER that has been as graphic or as gruelling to watch as French art-house flick "Irreversible"... I mean, JESUS!!! Absolutely horrid.... Oh, but of course, it's FRENCH, and it's "Art-House", so it's okay to have a 10-minute static camera rape scene that frankly looks more "realistic" than any hardcore porn film....

The huge difference between Irreversible and I Spit On Your Grave is that the former is thought provoking and has a hugely moral centre. The latter sadly is little more than a revenge fantasy. Because in Irreversible we see the act of vengeance before the rape we are forced to dissect the consequences on their own and try to make sense of them before we know why. The reasons for her leaving the party early also show how a seemingly insignifigant event can have horrifying and irreversible consequences The rape scene itself is stunningly well executed and it's unflinching nature only adds to the horror and revelation. If it wasn't done as a 'single take' and didn't last as long it's impact would be lessened. The fact that Marcus is played by Vincent Cassel (Monica Belucci's husband) only adds to the brilliance of it.

I Spit On Your Grave (both versions) however is completely the reverse. It immediately gives us the crime and therefore we automatically side with the victim as she sets about her revenge. Supporters have claimed this is a pro-feminist movie but it is so gratuitous in both its rapes and revenge killings that it is nothing more than masochistic violence and shock tactics. Unlike other similar era horrors (eg Texas Chainsaw Massacre - a brilliant study in terror) where a female lead is victimised it shows everything and in no way allows you to engage your brain. It's just one act of violence followed by another with zero character development or plot. Irreversible however shows you nothing and everything all at once. There's nothing gratuitous about it.

That's why the BBFC have a problem with it - Irreversible has a point and is never titilating, I Spit On Your Grave comes far too close to glamorising violence both sexual and not

Severin, a great rationalisation, and I tend to agree with every word... But, you and I are both film literate, whereas your typical dickhead looking for his Friday/Saturday night dose of Torture Porn isn't gonna give a $h!t about intellectual rationalisations, context or feminist discourses, they're just going to look at the "dead cool rape scene with that fit French bitch" and toss their load over it regardless.......... Sad, but true.... -_-

The BBFC are hypocrites and film censorsh"t for any reason is wrong... You tell me why I can get an uncensored copy of I Spit On Your Grave in Sweden, Netherlands or Germany, but not in UK..... It's ridiculous....
