Posted October 20, 201014 yr I've decided that I'd start investigating the music of Captain Beefheart, since a lot of the bands I like seem to cite him as an influence. Does anyone have any recommendations of where in his back catalogue to start looking?
October 20, 201014 yr It depends whether you want to go in at the deep end or not. Trout Mask Replica is his "masterpiece" but boy is it a challenging listen. Lately I've been listening to Ice Cream For Crow which is a nice mix of blues, jazz and rock with his frequently surrealist lyrics to the fore.
October 20, 201014 yr The bravest animals in the land are Captain Beefheart and his band That's Timid Toad, Reckless Rat, Artful Owl and Batty Bat They march through the woodlands singing songs That tell how they have righted wrongs Oh, hang on, that's wrong :P
October 21, 201014 yr Author I'd probably be better of going for his more accessable work, would 'Ice Cream' fit into that category?
October 21, 201014 yr I would say Ice Cream is more accessible, yes. You can listen to it on spotify.
October 21, 201014 yr I would recommend Safe As Milk, it's his first album and is kind of more Delta blues influenced, but 'Electricity' is on there, which features a theremin, and there's a song called 'I'm Glad' which is a complete curveball, being as it is a stunningly affecting soul song. Dropout Boogie is a classic too Edited October 21, 201014 yr by Cod
