Clearly you haven't seen some charts from the early 1990s then!

 

Anyway, it was the general point (that you clearly missed): dance is almost like Europe's "own" music genre, whereas country is like America's "own" music genre. Sometimes they cross over and dance can do well in America, etc, and indeed like now you have much dance-influenced pop music doing well in America, but in terms of "pure" dance its appeal is limited to only the odd hit - at least in the last decade or more - similar to the UK with country music. But if an American was to look at a European chart they'd be thinking exactly the same as you in terms of these faceless dance hits. The number of them is not that significant.

 

And as an aside, the assertion that indie, landfill or otherwise, was ruling the UK charts in the mid-2000s is SO untrue and really gets on my nerves. It's like a myth that's somehow spread and is now taken as fact. Seriously, it was never the case!! Urban music was doing much better than it in those years, for one.

3. When I say 'ruling the UK charts' I didn't mean that literally, just that there were a whole bunch of new entries by indistinguishable inide bands every single week around 2005-6 (maybe 2004 as well? ICR). I realise there were only a few really big indie songs back then.
