It's amazing how many songs we've had selling over 100k on merit (ie. not related to XF or charity) this year compared to last year...

Last year we literally just had Bonkers. I suppose you could count Beat Again as it wasn't performed on the X Factor but they're XF artists.

This year we've had Replay, California Gurls, Dynamite, Written In The Stars, F**k You! and Only Girl (In The World). You could count Just The Way You Are if you don't count it being performed on the XF by a contestant as being XF related.

it is great that we've had so many songs selling over 100k on merit alone, thats a good sign :) last year it was mainly charity songs and songs performed on XF

If this is a reflection of continued growing download sales in 2010, what could 2011 be like? Especially if there's plenty excellent tracks getting released.

1984 = massive year for vinyl sales

1997 = massive year for cd singles sales

2010 = massive year for download sales

:D

Also to note, the previous #2s were around Xmas period Rihanna has sort of broken the mould, I'm not sure this has happened prior to 2005 where the top 2 sold over 100k (particularly not around the festive period).

All the songs in bold are nothing to do with charity/X Factor

2010 will be looked back on as a great year for music!!

Except that half of them were performed on X factor!

No, this is not a good year for music, only good in terms of singles' sales.

This is the dawning of the digital age...

Amazing how Rihanna is one of the few to get a #2 with 100k+ ^_^ Other thing to add to her curriculum...

2008 was all x factor related acts!
47 15 Nov 100,237 Black Eyed Peas Meet Me Halfway

That was performed on the X Factor that week

Also to note, the previous #2s were around Xmas period Rihanna has sort of broken the mould, I'm not sure this has happened prior to 2005 where the top 2 sold over 100k (particularly not around the festive period).

Didn't The Corrs "Runaway" sell over 100K when it debuted at #2 behind "...Baby One More Time"?

Shakira's "Whenever Whereever" sold over 100K behind Will Young in 2002 too.

Edited by Zenith Zealot

Does anybody have a list of tracks that climbed from initial sales of below 100,000 to sales of over 100,000? All I can think of is Just the Way You Are, and Meet Me Halfway from recently, but there's probably some obvious others I'm forgetting. I guess Killing in the Name would count too. I think it's truly amazing when songs manage to do that. It's the sort of thing that seems to happen like once a year now, although I suppose it was a more common occurance in previous decades?

It definitely happened with Heartbeat/Tragedy by Steps which hit over 100k in it's 8th week on chart, which was all the more odd given it happened in early January too.

Every week the track spent in it's first 8 weeks was also within the top 10, so it wasn't like it was an album track charting on low sales initially either.

Although that was (just) outside the 2000's - 1998 going into 1999

I'd imagine that Blur's "Tender" did as well.

Wow, that's pretty amazing! And I LOVED Tragedy by Steps when I was a kid. :D I remember singing it like all the time! I must've been so annoying...

Thanks to the oddity of the UK chart rules in 2006, Gnarls Barkley achieved this.

02.04.06 Gnarls Barkley Crazy 31,703

09.04.06 Gnarls Barkley Crazy 194,179

Other examples of singles increasing over 100k are:

16.12.01 Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman Somethin' Stupid 98,500

23.12.01 Robbie Williams & Nicole Kidman Somethin' Stupid 110,000

04.02.01 Atomic Kitten Whole Again 69,285

11.02.01 Atomic Kitten Whole Again 85,295

18.02.01 Atomic Kitten Whole Again 101,919

25.02.01 Atomic Kitten Whole Again 113,090

In the case of 'Whole Again' it actually increased sales again in its fifth week in the chart (selling 115k) but dropped to no. 2 as Shaggy 'It Wasn't Me' rocketed to no. 1 selling 345k.

25.10.98 Cher Believe 107,000

01.11.98 Cher Believe 205,000

Cher almost doubled her sales in her second week of release. 'Believe' spent 7 weeks at no. 1 selling over 100k in those weeks too.

12.02.95 Celine Dion Think Twice 86,000

19.02.95 Celine Dion Think Twice 154,000

During Celine's seven week reign at no. 1, 'Think Twice' benefitted from a massive sales boost after the record company released the track as a cassette single.

I'd imagine that Blur's "Tender" did as well.

Whitney Houston 'It's Not Right, But It's Ok' also sold over 100k the same week to enter at #3 - so that week the top 3 sold over 100k.

Christmas 1997 must be the record though. The entire top 5 singles in Xmas 1997 sold over 100k each.
