21/11/2010 - Take That’s Progress sets new sales record; JLS score Number One with Children In Need

Take That have set a new sales standard with their latest album Progress, which has achieved the biggest opening week sales of any album for 13 years – the Official Charts Company confirms today.

The album sold almost 520,000 copies last week, more than the rest of the Top 10 biggest selling albums put together, to top today’s (Sunday) Official Albums Chart, according to Official Charts Company data.

The achievement represents the highest one-week sale for any album this century and one of the all-time fastest sales - the album sold more than Coldplay’s X&Y in 2005 (465,000 week one) and Take That’s The Circus in 2008 (432,000 week one).

In fact, the last album to sell more than 500,000 copies in a week was Oasis’s Be Here Now, which sold 663,000 in its first chart week in 1997 – after being released on the Thursday.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot says, “Since their reunion as a four-piece four years ago, Take That have firmly established themselves as the UK’s favourite band.

“Following the return of Robbie Williams to their ranks, that record has been further cemented – and they are now well on course to rule Christmas 2010, just as they dominated Christmas 2006 and 2008.”

Take That’s reunion album, Beautiful World, sold 2.5m copies in the UK and held the Number One spot for 8 weeks, with its 2008 follow-up The Circus selling 1m copies in just 18 days on its way to 2.2m sales to date, and was Number One for 5 weeks.

Then, earlier this year, they announced plans to reform with their erstwhile fifth member Robbie Williams. Earlier this month, ticket sales for next year’s Progress tour broke all records to secure Progress as the fastest and biggest selling tour in UK history with a total of 1.34m tickets sold, the first million going in just eight hours.

As lead single from the Progress album, The Flood entered the charts two weeks ago at number two to secure the band their 16th Top 5 hit single

Well done to all the TT boys.

520,000 sounds about right. How many did the Circus sell in its first week? How much did RKTVS sell in its first week? Add those together and you won't be that far off 520,000 allowing for some fanbase overlap. ^_^

The Circus did about 432,000 in its opening week.

Not to mention it went on to sell over 400K in each of the three following consecutive weeks! Imagine if Progress does similar!

It would be great if progress can follow a similar pattern and i think it has a good chance of doin so as well.

It was closer to xmas then, wasn't it? I believe Progress could sell 400K this week. (it will definitely sell 300K+ IMO and wipe the floor with all competition this week)

As long as they are promoting album sales & single sales will be high.

Amazing sales - a little disappointed it didn't pass 550K though...

I doubt it will repeat 'The Circus' 400K for 3 weeks - we are not near enough to Xmas for that sort of consistancy in massive sales.

I think it will sell over 250K this week beating JLS and Westlifw with relative ease.

I still do think via the word of mouth of how different this album is sales won't end up being as massive as predicted by the end of the year. It will still be the years' best selling album easily but I don't think due to the change of direction that it will quite repeat the sales of Circus in terms of huge sales in the lead up to Xmas.

They are on Radio 1 right now - deciding between Kidz and Happy Now for the second single. They want the fans online to decide it appears. All they need to do is look on the forums - Happy Now isn't even being suggested - almost everyone is saying Kidz and has been since the album leaked. It's a no brainer.

I think around 250,00 this coming week as well and sales will dip a little but will sell around 400,000 on the week leading into christmas day.

It is not a no brainer imo... The album has a lot of songs that would qualify as singles, but I guess Kidz is the best choice. It is not much of a christmas tune though... I am not sure it is the best timing if it is to be released late December-January..

Media traffic have stated that Progress has sold over 500k worldwide (outside UK). This combined with the UK sales takes Progress to over 1 million sales in the first week. Progress is top of the global charts with the highest first week sales of any album worldwide in 2010

for TT for the first time after Robbie's leaving :cheer:

#1 Denmark

#1 Germany

#1 Switzerland

#1 Netherlands

The album became the best selling in Europe and Worldwide for the week and this is the first such success for TT.

(I just copy my post from general chart dicussion)

No way they could battle with Taylor Swift... She has sold slightly more than 1million in the US alone on her first week.

I would also like to see how on earth mediatraffic breaks down 1million WW sales (it could actually refer to shipments instead) for Progress (first week).

It CAN't have sold more than 50K Germany 30K Italy 30K France----> 200K max whole EU + 100K for the rest WW =800K max

I actually believe it has sold roughly 520K UK +200K outside = WW less than 750K.... Look at where Progress charted last week outside the UK, let's not be delusional. Selling 500K outside the UK would require no1's ALL over the world!

As much as I would love them to be the best selling act they are most definitelly not! Taylor's Speak Now must have sold at least 1.3millions first week.

They must be also behind Eminem's first week at no3 if I am not forgetting anyone else.

A) Mediatraffic is a load of nonsense in general. The vast majority of the sales are complete guess work.

B ) This 519K figure is for the UK and Ireland only - as the album wasn't released elsewhere until the following Friday. But even at that it would indicate it sold at best a few hundred copies in Ireland which is rubbish. The total WW figure for the first week should have been 540K easily including Ireland.

C) We won't see European sales until next week Mediatraffic chart - but even at that whatever figure will likely be further rubbish. I can see it selling 250K in the UK/Ireland this week and at most 150K throughout Europe. Therefore 400K for next week's Mediatraffic fig. I can see them coming up with either a much lower than that or much higher.

So officially #1 in Germany and Denmark? And rumored in The Netherlands and Switzerland? A huge improvement on #14, #13, #68 and #22 in those respective countries from TT's last album The Circus. It's the first time since their comeback that TT have reached #1 with an album outside the UK/Ireland.

I will be interested to see how it does in France? They charted there once in the 90's so have a very small fanbase - but they were on French TV the other day promoting so it is surely going to be their highest ever charting album in France ever? I think they are waiting to see how it does before announcing a date as Rob had said before there would be a Paris date - plus Gary said on the TV show they want to perform there.

Officaly number 1 again in the UK this week putting a firm stop to both JLS and Westlife, nice revenege for robbie!!! I think we will get a sales update later but im expecting sales to be in or around 215,000 this week.
Progress sold over 208,000 this week, beating jls to number 1 by almost 60,000 and beating westlife by 114,000. Progress total Uk sales now stand at 726,821. The circus had sold alot more at this stage and progress wont reach the million sales as quick, however progress sales are still; very very impressive.

Very good sales for Progress - sold more in it's second week than any other album sold in it's first this year. Would have expected a little north of 230K but considering the bad whether - yesterdays sales would have been way down I suspect. Sales will start to increase a lot in the run up to Xmas. Might be down for next week though but after that I think we will see increases.

A big drop in sales for JLS compared to last year - and Westlife not even breaking the 100K barrier is a disaster. Maybe they should get Brian back - not that it will matter much. LOL.

I am delighted to see IAOOC already in the top 20 best sellers of the year - it's success has proved far greater than expected for a second hits collection. Hopefully it continues selling well over Xmas. Half a million before the end of the year is not out of thw question :D

Interesting to note that The Circus sold around 319K in it's second week in 2008 (it sold over 300K for it's first four weeks) - so over 100K more than Progress. Main reason for this is that The Circus was released only a couple of weeks before Xmas - Progress won't start to get that same advantage for another few weeks - when all album sales will start increases hugely for obvious reasons.

It must also be pointed out that album sales were stronger two years ago (which makes Progress's 520K debut even more impressive) - after one week on sale Circus was the 10th best seller of 08 - Progress was #9 after a week - and after two weeks on sale The Circus was the fifth best seller of 08 - after two weeks Progress is the forth best selling of 10 - and it will easily be #1 with the next 2-3 weeks. It will achieve what The Circus failed to do - and that is become the years best selling album. Beautiful World failed to become the best seller of 2006 too - so it would be nice to see. I will be shocked if Progress doesn't achieve this. TT have never had a best seller of any year and Rob has only achieved that twice - in 2002 for Escapology (which sold 1.5M despite being released late November) and in 2001 with Swing WYW which was #1 for 6 weeks. I can see Progress passing the 1.5M mark before the end of the year but due to the word of mouth due to the change of direction I am unsure if it will pass the 2M point. Time will tell but I won't be remotely surprised if it doesn't due to the overall sound and genre. So far it is selling on the back of The Flood which is by any standard quite a normal sounding pop record - but I am more than positive that a lot of the more casual housewife types will not be pleased with the overall sound of the album apart from a couple of tracks and that is where the disadvantage lies commercially speaking. It will continue selling very well in the short term but I can't see it selling near what Beautiful World sold in the UK for example. The extra international sales will make up for things on that front though - with it having a good chance of being their best seller ever globally. The second single will be a tough choice - Kidz is the obvious choice imo - with the third single possibly Eight Letters to attract the more casual listener who hadn't already bought it at that stage.
