Posted November 6, 201014 yr I love the X Factor, but to be fair it has ruined the xmas #1! and don't get me started on that flipping rage song well, its not a song isit! Anyway, I remember how amazing it was in 2003! We had Bill Nighly - Christmas is All Around Pop Idol Finalists - Happy Xmas (War Is Over) Gary Jules - Mad World Darkness - Christmastime Don't Let the Bells End Cheeky Girls - Have A Cheeky Christmas and loads more, they were all actual christmas songs, and I remember a great atmosphere in the weeks leading up to it, I thought Pop Idol has it in the bag!
November 6, 201014 yr I think Wham Vs. Band Aid was a particualry big famous one, involving massive selling Christmas songs on Xmas number 1 week!
November 6, 201014 yr The Christmas chart is now mainly an homeage to The X Factor :( Moreso than the weeks leading up to it. Songs performed on the final, acts who appear on the final. Acts that use the audience viewership to have a stupid 'audience' with show straight after it, crappy campaigns to try and beat the X Factor without realising they are doing the exact same thing as said show... That's all that makes up the Xmas chart now :( I loved 2003. The songs were a bit naff but it had so many contenders [bo Selecta!, Darkness, Atomic Kitten, Blue, Cheeky Girls, Mad World, Sugababes, Kelly & Ozzy, Pop Idols etc]. That was the last truly awesome Xmas chart battle imo.
November 6, 201014 yr What did Mariah Carey lose out to in the race for Xmas number one? East 17 "Stay" -which was number 1 for 5 weeks.
November 6, 201014 yr The Pogues losing out to The Pet Shop Boys Always On My Mind :o I do love that song but it's a shame The Pogues have never been #1 - ditto for Wham! and Mariah considering their massive popularity.
November 6, 201014 yr My favourite battle probably was Bob The Builder beating Westlife at Christmas 2000. Utterly brilliant and very satisfying!! :D
November 6, 201014 yr Author I know the Spice Girls sailed to it in 1996, and then fended off the tubbies in 1997, but if I recall it was quite close in 1998 when the south park song was released - it went to number one the week after IIRC.
November 6, 201014 yr East 17 "Stay" -which was number 1 for 5 weeks. It's called 'Stay Another Day' Anyway, I personally think Nizlopi were robbed of a Christmas #1. I know they got there the week before, and at least Shayne's winner's song wasn't a cover, but still.
November 6, 201014 yr 1999 We had Westlife, Steps, S Club &, Vengaboys, Chef (South Park) and Hamster song all released in the one week
November 6, 201014 yr My favourite battle probably was Bob The Builder beating Westlife at Christmas 2000. Utterly brilliant and very satisfying!! :D Same here. Although last year was equally satisfying. It was good to see Girls Aloud trounce One True Voice in 2002, too, considering a lot of people (including me) thought it would be the other way around! The rest were boring. I didn't care about 2003 for some reason and 1999 and 2001 were just crap songs vs crap songs. Len - Steal My Sunshine should have been Xmas #1 1999! :D
November 6, 201014 yr some that come to mind: Pet shop Boys beating the Pogues (I love the pet shop boys and all, but that was just an injustice :( ) Michael Andrews beating The Darkness (the better song definitely won  ) Slade beating Wizzard (both are brilliant, but I always slightly preferred the latter) Bob The Builder beating Westlife ( :cheer: ) Band Aid beating Wham (again both are classics, so its hard to pick which is better) the two Hallelujahs (one brilliant and the other absolutely horrific- guess which one won? :( ) and of course.... Rage beating Joe!! :w00t: Edited November 6, 201014 yr by chart wizard
November 6, 201014 yr Pet shop Boys beating the Pogues (I love the pet shop boys and all, but that was just an injustice :( ) Either one of them would've been my favourite Christmas no. 1 so it's officially Always on My Mind.
November 6, 201014 yr what about the battle with hallelujah? Yea it wasn't much since Alexandra Burke dwarfed it but I think this was the first time a major campaign tried to influence the top spot. Am i correct?
November 6, 201014 yr As much as X Factor's monopoly over the Christmas charts annoys me, sort of hypocritically my favourite Christmas #1 battle has to be Girls Aloud vs. One True Voice, because it was the first time that a reality show targeted the Christmas chart (the ORIGINAL Christmas #1 ruin-er) and I loved Popstars The Rivals
November 6, 201014 yr i love the xmas chart battles even if xfactor has ruined things a bit the british public vented their 'rage' last year and showed nothing can be taken for granted.i dont mind if the songs are novelty or one hit wonder as it makes the chart original from other charts at xmas (the us doesnt make a big deal out of the number 1 at xmas - its usually just another rubbish rnb song which is no1 at any other time of the year!!). my fav battle i can remember is the 2003 one - everyone though the popstars would easily do it (as did cowell) but they were trounced by 2 better records and the battle between darkness and mad world was soo close i remember eating my sunday dinner and hearing mad world had won and i nearly choked as the front guy from the darkness had been smug all week saying finally we have a proper xmas no1!! but 2003 showed cowell how he could take advantage of the xmas market like he does now dont miss my xmas chart rundowns throughout december on CC - im up to 1996 now i think!!
