IMO there'll be a Michael-Jackson-like flood - fans have waited *so* long for this!

Is there some reason why fans could not have ripped their cds at this stage?

This is a whole massive joke, you can get the CD boxset, complete with lossless audio (rather than the terrible terrible terrible itunes compressed format), for cheaper than what iTune's are charging.

seriously itunes is the worst music service in existance.

I think I might love you after that statement.

Real music fans would have sorted this problem ages ago. It's the numpties that buy X Factor singles and basically anything that is promoted (ie rammed down their throats) that will be downloading Beatles tracks when they are released on iTunes.

You guys are probably going on about how much you think The Beatles were bland and all (they're not my favourite group) but in those days my parents would be saying the same about their parents's "old music"! So in 30 years I guess that kids will be saying what we say about 50s/60s music and saying how crap Katy Perry sounds then (hard to believe I know)! :kink: I'm just saying :L

Hope that Florence will make Top. 40 at least. She's nearly there! Lost hope with Hurts :(

Katy Perry sounds crap even now <_< ;)

I also cross my fingers for Florence even though I'm not yet 100% convinced by this new song.

I agree. To be honest, I think it's a psychological thing. Those songs you hear from day 1 will be the songs that you get accustomed to, and base all other music around, I suppose, so as you grow older, you'll find that type of music generic, and you'll want to listen to different music.

Which means if I have kids, they won't be liking the Black Eyed Peas.

The difference is ... in 30 years people will say 'Katy who?' No slight intended on Katy ... they'll also be asking 'Britney who?', 'Christina who?', 'Florence who?' The list goes on. But in another 30 years ... people will still know of the Beatles ... whether they think they're overrated or not.

I went through a phase of not liking them (only at that time ... the Monkees were my favourites ... I thought the Beatles were old hat). Now I think to saying they're overrated is a bit like saying 'well we didn't really need penicillin did we?'

Anyone saying The Beatles are overrated need to get their heads checked. Legendary band.

Maybe you could say their *music* is overrated, but The Beatles themselves deserve all the prestige they have.

The Beatles? Over-rated?

Chart Music at the moment is in a state similar to 1959-1962. Music is dominated by pop pandering to teens and pre-teens with anything edgy and interesting being sidelined.

Just like the early rock'n'roll being sidelined by manufactured pop stars like Cliff, Adam Faith and Tommy Steele. Even Elvis was useless during that time.

The Beatles pushed back the boundaries of what was possible with music and any one of their albums from With The Beatles on contains more ideas than the whole of the current Top 40 put together.

The reason their songs are still loved (and still selling in large numbers) is because they are so good.

If any band today could come up with something as remotely good as Eleanor Rigby or I Am The Walrus then I would be truly impressed.

It's an age thing Grebo ... that people get over. Believe me ... all those who harp on about Katy, Christina, JLS, Britney, Florence, Ellie, etc ... even Robbie and Take That and bloody Oasis for that matter, will feel as foolish as I feel now when I remember saying to my mum and dad 'The Monkees are well better than The Beatles'.

Who says the Beatles are overrated?

You don't get 6 million-selling singles by being overrated. You get 6 milllion-selling singles by being legendary

Florence, Christina and Katy maybe but I do think that Britney will still be remembered in 30 years time, she's part of pop folklore now. I guess Coldplay, Eminem, Beyonce and Robbie Williams/Take That (in the UK at least) will also still be remembered well, even if not fondly.

I think the Beatles are overrated. Just from hearing their music my whole life, I can't understand how they were so massively successful. I keep thinking, surely there must've been better music to buy back then!

But as others have mentioned, it'll be the same in the future, when kids listen to Lady Gaga's music. They'll find it boring and generic (heck, I already do), and, even worse, they'll probably be like "Who's Lady Gaga?".

That said, I think some of the more popular artists from these times WILL be remembered in the future. The biggest artists in music, at any time will be remembered, whether or not their music is actually good. Just like all those classical artists from centuries ago are remembered. People may find the music boring now, but they're still remembered. Same with the Beatles. I find their music very boring (in general), but I still hear a lot about them, even today.

As I said in an earlier post, just as my parents can't stop talking about people like The Beatles, I probably won't stop talking about the music I like now for decades, and thus, the children will hear about them all the time, and think they're "legendary" too, even though they're not, and it's just me hyping them up. Heck, today, I must've listened to over a dozen songs I liked from the late-90's. I've not forgotten about them, and by the looks of things, I don't think I ever will, but let's face it, they would not be hits if they were released today.

EDIT: Just re-read my post, and half of it makes no sense.

You would be surprised with what will be remembered in 20-30 years time, some of the 80s and 90s stuff you see on music channels now is dreadful...

Just out of interest, how old are you?

I'm 18 *waits for the usual "You're a teenager, you're easily led, you can't make your own decisions, you're deaf, you're life revolves around hype, you like rap music, and you think Lady Gaga is boring, so your opinion is worthless"*

Seriously though, I've been hearing The Beatles songs for almost 2 decades now, and I just find them boring. I can't really understand how they were so successful. Was there seriously no better music at the time?

I'm seventeen and my Dad has been cramming them into my ears for the past... well... seveteen years, and I feel exactly the same. THey're a hideously overrated band, despite them being a revolution to the British music scene.

Oh, and John Lennon was awful. Period.

What I find hilarious is that you obviously like music (why would you be here otherwise) and you've made no attempt to find out about any music probably pre 1999 (in my humble opinion the worst year on record until this year) If you find The Beatles boring then you'll probably find the likes of Dylan, The Stones, The Who, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding, The Kinks, The Walker Brothers, Dusty Springfield, Love, The Supremes and James Brown completely boring.

Nothing wrong with liking Hip-Hop. Go listen to Danger Mouse's Grey album to hear something new (and amazing) that was done with The Beatles.

Personally I think Gaga has been the ONLY interesting thing to happen to pop music in the last 2 years. Oh that and Bonkers probably.

I used to think like you too when i was 18... I'd heard the Beatles so much growing up that i wa sick of them. Took me a few years to truly appreciate what an amazing band they were. Incidently the kind of music i liked when i was 18 (1992) i'm not so fond of now.... other than nostalgia!

Yeah, exactly. And if I ever had children, I'll probably be playing all the Black Eyed Peas albums on repeat for years and years, and they'll probably get fed up of it, and they'll be like "How did the Black Eyed Peas get so popular, they suck", and it'll probably upset me, as I love them, but that's the way it goes. The only difference, is, the BEPs are nowhere near as big as The Beatles were, bit it's a similar principle.

But I'm absolutely fed up of having to listen to Heart FM every day with my parents, and hearing those same songs every...single...day, which are apparently "classics". And everyday, my dad sits in the dining room, working, with all his old records playing again, and again. It's rare I hear a song I actually want to listen to again, tbh. However, I bet my dad would hate the music I like just as much as I hate his.
