Surely the point is to appeal to their *fans*?

Not at all, the fans buy it regardless. Artists should try to appeal to a wide audience of non fans as often as they can...

willow gaining so fast :D soon infront off ellie... i would rather a song she wrote herself number 1 than a cover song

I can assure you Willow did not write that song.

#769 :(

Ouchie :(

Nelly Furtado is a bigger flop than Anastacia  At least I Can Feel You (which remains one of my fave Ana songs) made the Top 75.

GH is doomed then.

I would rather a cover which is good than an original song which is awful!

So not even next week will Ellie get #1! Ugh.
I used to really like Ellie Goulding - Your Song, but now i dont like it :( I despise Willow aswell though.. and black eyed peas and xfactor finalist.. It's like the worst top 4 next week.
I do not get hate for covers. As edward says i'd rather a great cover over an awful 'original' song. wtf. This is just generally not related to right now but just in general.

I agree about covers.

But there's some people who seem to just sit there with some sort of checklist to determine whether they like a song. "Is this song a cover? Yes. Okay, I don't like it then". "Was this song written by the credited artist? Yes. Oh, well it's a very good song then".

I've always wondered what these people do when they hear a song they like, and then discover it's a cover. Do they suddenly dislike the song, delete it off their mp3 player, etc?

Some people have similar attitudes to sampling, autotune, rapping, etc. which really annoys me too. These people must HATE will.i.am.

He was talking about how he would prefer Ellie Goulding to have a #1 with a song she wrote instead of a cover. Which is perfectly understandable considering songs she writes are more representative of her as an artist than a song she didn't write.

Yep, i know what he was refering too.

I'm saying i dont get the small number of people who hate covers, i just judge the song as a song, not if its a cover or not. A lot of songs out there are written by different people who sing them, its just not important to me. A good song is a good song.

One person didn't though.

And I already explained why some people don't like covers, if you actually bothered to read. It's not representative of the artist themselves. How can it be when they didn't write it? It's not based on their experiences, feelings or anything - just somebody else's. This is also why some people have problems with artists who don't write their own songs.

Personally I don't have a problem with either but I'm just explaining the reasoning of some people.

It won't though it was top 30 in the midweeks and it's only out on physically on 13 Dec, there's not even a single cover for it yet and N-Dubz are not promoting it at all. It's the one of the worst songs on the album, you should really listen to Cold Shoulder, Love Live Life or Morning Star. They are so so much better and more appealing to N-Dubz haters. .

I doubt it will have a physical release, I'm not even sure of a digital single release

Who are you to say it doesnt represent an artist? Or that they cant relate to it themselves with their emotions and experiences. A song can be very powerful and relate to an artist whether they wrote it or not, and then they sing it and put their own stamp on it. How can you say only the only person who can relate to the song is the person who wrote it? Just doesnt make sense.

If a cover is good, its good, doesnt matter if its a cover.

Songs are supposed to connect with the mass of people, millions of people can connect to a song through their experiences or emotions at a point in their life, just because someone wrote a song doesnt mean nobody else can relate to it.

I agree with you. Sometimes an artist does a cover and really feels the song and the emotions the original writer felt, and it's amazing. But unfortunately there's way too many that are the complete opposite, with the X Factor crap being the absolute nadir in completely soulless covers.

I just think people need to look at covers objectively, not just hear its a cover then say 'Oh its crap', the reasoning behind not liking covers isnt strong enough. Okay if you dnot like a song you dont like a song, or if you dont like a cover because you're not fond of an artist fine, but dont just immediately not like it because its a cover. I think a cover has the ability to be better then the original, and an artist can completely change a song and bring it to a new level.

Back to iTunes, its now 6:10 and Whip My Hair still isnt #1, quite a lead Ellie has there, should be #1 soon though.

Willow just moments away from the 1st spot... I'm in extreme hope Willow has a comfortable lead to keep B.E.P. off.

Why did "Only girl" get back to 3rd, btw? Besides that it's a fantastic song...
