December 1, 201014 yr Author Greg Lake - never get fed up of that one. Most other Xmas songs I have become bored of as they are played to death every year. Mariah's used to be a good one too but now that gets played to death thanks to DFS. an absolutely brillant xmas song., the instrumental is sooo festive!! was gutted to see it miss the top spot in 1975 - least it was beaten by queen bohemnian rapsody - an instant classic!!
December 1, 201014 yr Author Looks like coldplays christmas song will be on radio 1s playlist this year as zane lowes premiering it tonight!!
December 1, 201014 yr 2. Pouges - Fairytale of New York (Though it's barely a Xmas song) It's 100% a Christmas song, have you even heard it? Anyways: 1. The Pogues feat. Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York      2. Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody   3. Chris Rea - Driving Home For Christmas  4. Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry 5. Bo Selecta - Proper Crimbo :kink: 6. The Darkness - Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End) 7. Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday (although I find it very overrated to be honest) 8. John Lennon, Yoko Ono, The Plastic Ono Band and The Harlem Community Choir - Happy Xmas (War Is Over) 9. Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas? 10. Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmastime Just missing out is The Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping.
December 1, 201014 yr Author cant believe i left john lennon out of mine!! :o absolute legend!! strange how chris rea is one of the biggest selling xmas singles in this decade and yet was pretty much a major flop when released in 1989!??!
December 1, 201014 yr Yes, it's a bit bizarre how it took two decades before DHFC joined the list of Christmas classics. It actually reached the top 40 for the first time within the past few years. It's deserved though, great Christmas song.
December 2, 201014 yr Author i think its due to the fact that its the most obvious song to play on the week leading up to xmas on the radio meaning people are hearing it alot more now!!
December 2, 201014 yr i think its due to the fact that its the most obvious song to play on the week leading up to xmas on the radio meaning people are hearing it alot more now!! It's just strange that radio chose to start hammering a flop as if it were a classic.
December 3, 201014 yr The stand out ones for me, in no order are: The Pretenders - 2000 miles - beautiful and never over played so it's always a delight to hear. The Pogues/Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale of New York - a bit ott and I don't really want to hear anything that emotional when I'm shopping in Tesco, but still. Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry - when you break it down this song is still a madness - it totally should not work but it 100% does it every time. Greg Lake - I Believe in Father Christmas - the musical borrowing is beautiful to start with, but the icy starkness of the delivery is genius. Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmastime. I know, I can't help it - but this is truly the sound of a ridiculously talented writer arsing about and it always makes me smile. and maybe a new one, i'm loving Christmas Lights by Coldplay, it's maybe too soon to know if it's got the legs to be a great, but well, I think it just might...
December 3, 201014 yr It's just strange that radio chose to start hammering a flop as if it were a classic. You make it sound like Chris Rea is some random flopstar. He was a very popular musician, particularly around the late 1980s/early 1990s, when Driving Home For Christmas was released, so I don't find it strange at all that it's become a Christmas classic. If it was recorded by someone less well-known then it probably would have been forgotten instantly. Though I'm not sure why it flopped the first time around but he never did that well singles-wise - it was albums where he was very successful, so perhaps that had something to do with it. Doesn't necessarily mean it didn't have strong airplay at the time! As for the topic, I would say Fairytale of New York, All I Want For Christmas is You, Last Christmas, December Will Be Magic Again, 2000 Miles, Santa Baby, Stop The Cavalry, Winter Wonderland and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer are all up there. Also special mentions to Destiny's Child, Boney M., South Park, The Kinks, Mew, Chris Rea, The Waitresses and Fountains of Wayne! That's all I can think of off the top of my head and I'm not going to order them because I always struggle with things like that, putting something too low before realising a couple of hours later that I should have put it ahead of such and such. But FONY is definitely #1. I don't think it ever really gets old (though not many songs get ruined by "too much airplay" for me personally)... Edited December 3, 201014 yr by superbossanova
December 3, 201014 yr 1. Bing Crosby/David Bowie - Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth 2. Pogues ft. Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York 3. Johnny Mathis - When A Child Is Born 4. G4 - Silent Night 5. Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday 6. David Essex - A Winter's Tale 7. Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry 8. Traditional - O Holy Night 9. Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody 10. Cliff Richard - Saviour's Day

December 3, 201014 yr For me it has to be Jona Lewie's 'Stop The Cavalry'. With what is going on in the world at the moment .... no song is more appropriate. Would love this to be X-Mas number 1. EOe18JcatZo Kath Edited December 3, 201014 yr by Kathyp
December 3, 201014 yr 1: The Pogues feat. Kirsty McColl - Fairytale Of New York 2: Tom Jones & Cerys Matthews - Baby, It's Cold Outside 3: Spice Girls - Christmas Wrapping 4: Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas 5: Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone 6: Bruce Springsteen - Santa Claus Is Coming To Town 7: Alma Cogan - Never Do A Tango With An Eskimo 8: The Jackson 5 - Frosty The Snowman 9: Mud - Lonely This Christmas 10: Band Aid 1984 - Do They Know It's Christmas?
December 4, 201014 yr My fave is Greg Lake's I believe in Father Christmas. Of the more recent stuff, I was surprised Status Quo and George Michael didn't have top 10 hits with their festive songs.
