77. Didrik Solli–Tangen – My Heart Is Yours #5 This started out as one of my favourites but my love for it waned rapidly

76. The Pipettes – So I'll Say Goodbye #2 Brilliant song, shame it was relegated to being a b-side, would have been one of the highlights on the album

74. Jessy Matador – Allez! Ola! Ole! #9 One of the most random ESC entries to date, very catchy though! It deserved a higher placing in the contest

73. Boyzone – Love Is A Hurricane #8 I rarely like their songs, but this was a favourite of mine

72. Alcazar – Headlines #4 Fabulous tune, should have made the MF final at least!

68. Glee Cast – Don't Stop Believin' #8 :drama: I am pretty surprised to see this here!

65. Cheryl Cole – Parachute #4 My favourite from the first album

64. Timbaland feat Katy Perry – If We Ever Meet Again #3 Easily the best song from Shock Value II imo.

63. Katie Melua – The Flood #7 Stunning tune, shame the album didn't live up to expectations though

62. Pepper & Piano – You Took My Heart #4 Decent tune, I'd like to hear a full version of it.

61. Rihanna – Only Girl (In The World) #4 This was a very welcome return after Rated R. One of her best singles.

77. I still really like it but it dropped quite rapidly down my YTD chart throughout the year...

76. Agreed, they were mad to leave this one off imo, it really got me quite excited for the album after the lacklustre singles!

74. Definitely, it's had a long shelf life for me, one of the few ESC 2010 entries I'll still play every so often, really feel good song

73. It's incredibly Ronan esque, could have easily been the follow up to Life Is A Rollercoaster

72. I agree with that, but it's definitely 4th in terms of their MF entries for me behind (in descending order) Stay The Night, Alcastar and Not A Sinner, Nor A Saint

68. Really!?! I like this one a lot, really love the arrangement. I do watch Glee when it's on E4 (never online first), so I'm definitely not a 'Gleek', more a casual fan I suppose...

65. All three singles from the first album were excellent imo! She gets far too much flack on BJ...

64. Not that it was hard of course

63. I've really been getting into No Fear Of Heights recently oddly enough, it was used in a film I watched last week and made me appreciate it quite a bit more! But indeed, the album didn't really live up to the bar set by The Flood...

Just missing out on my top 50 of the year then, X Factor 2008 4th placed finalist Diana Vickers annoyed me no end in the show but Once showed that she had potential and I took a chance and got her album. Very accomplished debut and my personal standout track was the ballad Notice, which I wish had been a single instead of My Wicked Heart. The final couple of minutes in particular (esp the violin solo) really send me back to a 1998 Corrs production, which is ALWAYS a good thing!!! Kylie's third single from Aphrodite, Better Than Today, Alphabeat's brilliant and oh so underrated DJ and Sky Ferriera's super flop debut single One also appear in this segment. With her second entry, former Ace of Base singer Jenny Beggren's Here I Am was another contender for 'could have been out in 1998', absolutely love the chorus and backing vocals to this! A tune I made myself at #55 - splicing together Lena Meyer-Landrut's cover of Ellie Goulding's demo Not Following, I preferred the end result to either of their two solo versions! US country act Sugarland's infectious Stuck Like Glue, and a trio of UK top five hits from Alexis Jordan, Lady GaGa and Cheryl Cole round off this section!

Next up is the bottom half of my top 20 albums of 2010, but first is the top 10 compilations, which I've decided to separate this year because it looked a bit silly having them together!

^They're what I like so far, with 'Ego' probably being my favourite (although it's more 2009 for me, but anyway). Glad to see two Cheryl songs already - and I'm suprised (but pleased) to see 'Promise This' not appear yet! :o (could it be a shock top 10?!). Good bottom fifty anyway. :)

11. Diana Vickers - Songs From The Tainted Cherry Tree #1 (Favourite tracks - Notice, Once, The Boy Who Murdered Love)

12. Elin Lanto - Love Made Me Do It #1 (Favourite tracks - Funeral, Give It All Up, Singing Goodbye)

13. Katy Perry - Teenage Dream #1 (Favourite tracks - California Gurls, Firework, Last Friday Night)

14. Alicia Keys - The Element Of Freedom #1 (Favourite tracks - Try Sleeping With A Broken Heart, Doesn't Mean Anything, Unthinkable (I'm Ready))

15. Anna Bergendahl - Yours Sincerely #1 (Favourite tracks - This Is My Life, Rolling Dice, Got My Heart In Your Pocket)

16. Tone Damli - Cocool #2 (Favourite tracks: Stuck In My Head, No Way Out, I Love You)

17. Hurts - Happiness #1 (Favourite tracks: Wonderful Life, Stay, The Water)

18. Shakira - Sale El Sol #1 (Favourite tracks: Waka Waka (This Time For Africa), Rabiosa, Islands)

19. Marina & The Diamonds – The Family Jewels #1 (Favourite tracks: Hollywood, Are You Satisfied?, Mowgli's Road)

20. Cheryl Cole – Messy Little Raindrops #1 (Favourite tracks: Promise This, Happy Tears, The Flood)

Kicking off the albums top 20 of 2010 then, Cheryl Cole's second solo album is almost as good as the first, probably more consistent but less standout tracks...Marina & The Diamonds' thoroughly commercially overlooked gem is at #19 and Shakira's Sale El Sol is a vast improvement on last year's She Wolf album, if still not up to the standard of Oral Fixation Vol.2 and Laundry Service...Hurts are one of 2010's finest new bands and their debut was extremely good, real quality. Tone Damli's I Know album was a bit lacklustre for me but she redeemed herself with the shockingly excellent Cocool, the only album not to reach #1 in my weekly chart to make my end of year top 20!!! Sweden's Eurovision flop Anna Bergendahl actually delivered a fantastic debut album, Alicia Keys' 2009 album is so good that it manages to feature in my 2010 chart too! With Katy Perry's One Of The Boys finishing up at #2 in my end of year 2008 chart, I was perhaps one of the original Katy loons on BuzzJack, along with Jonjo. But as her material's got slightly less to my taste, the more it's got to everybody else's and she's now Queen of BJ, in GaGa's absence of course, ready to be tossed aside again when Born This Way leaks!!! No denying that it's a fantastic and very slick, superstar sounding second album but the singles, Last Friday Night and The One That Got Away really make the album special. The rest of the songs aren't amazing, but still worthy enough to make it my 13th favourite album of the year. Swedish singer Elin Lanto pulled a Kylie with a great disco pop album, with a lot of standout tracks and finally 'the claw', Diana Vickers just misses my top ten of the year with a shockingly brilliant debut album - although looking at the calibre of songwriters involved, perhaps I shouldn't be so surprised!

I nearly had an heart-attack when I saw the name 'Lena' at #55 :drama:

Thanks Theo! Interesting thoughts on my top 3, we'll see if you're proven correct soon enough :o

I tend to carry songs over if I like them enough into a second calendar year. 3 Words was in my top 40 of 2009, and now just missing the top 50 of 2010, but I was addicted to it between November 2009 - February 2010, so it's only fair that it's represented again! :D Same with Ego I guess, although it didn't have enough of an impact to make my chart of 2009. Shocked to see Promise This not appear yet? :o It was a #1 in my chart and top ten for ages, it's quite a bit higher!

Before I get into the big 40 then, here are the ten songs just missing out, but still all completely amazing!

50. Ellie Goulding – Your Song #4

49. Elin Lanto – Funeral #3

48. Lady GaGa – Bad Romance #1

47. Elsiane – Vaporous #2

46. Leddra Chapman – Summer Song #5

45. Safura – Drip Drop #4

44. Cee Lo Green – f*** You #3

43. Robyn – In My Eyes #2

42. Take That – Eight Letters #2

41. Erik Hassle – Hurtful #2

Ellie Goulding's gorgeous cover of Elton John's Your Song just sneaks into the top 50 followed by an example of a Scandipop chorus done amazingly. Funeral by Elin Lanto may not have had the cheeriest subject matter ('no matter if you end up, in heaven or in hell, I'll be dancing on your funeral'!) but the song is a triumph! Placing at #4 in my EOY 2009 chart, GaGa continued to chart high well into 2010 and ends up in my top 50 of this year too, such is the stunning piece of pop that it is! A gorgeous and haunting trip-hop song from Peruvian-Canadian act Elsiane, Leddra Chapman's aptly titled and breezy summer single and Azerbaijan's great Eurovision entry (that they thought they could buy a victory with!) also appear in this section. Shame Safura was a bit of a mess live! Cee Lo Green had one of the more memorable hits of the year with the motown throwback f*** You, which like Funeral, is incredibly feel good, despite it's lyrics. Slowing things down a bit, Robyn's absolutely stunning and criminally ignored for a release In My Eyes, Take That's Eight Letters, from their Progress album, and Swede Erik Hassle's mega flop Hurtful just come in outside the top 40 of 2010!!!

  • Author

Into the top 40 of the year we go then :D Not quite as good as 2009 overall but definitely better than 2008. Until that amazing week of the leaks in May, it looked like a lost cause of a year but it's improved drastically as it's gone along thank god!

40. Nicole Scherzinger – Poison #5

39. The Naked & Famous - Young Blood #2

38. The Band Perry - If I Die Young #2

37. Nadine Coyle - Insatiable #1 (for 1 week)

36. Hera Björk - Je Ne Sais Quoi #6

35. Tom Dice - Me & My Guitar #2

34. Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup - We No Speak Americano #3

33. Anna Bergendahl - This Is My Life #3

32. The Saturdays - Missing You #2

31. Robyn - Dancing On My Own #4

Kicking off then with solo Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger! Exactly when was she allowed to be this good? Poison is an example of RedOne at his best (at least his best when not working with GaGa) with a killer chorus and brilliant middle eight to boot. New Zealand 'ones to watch' The Naked & Famous, an alternative pop act in the MGMT with female singer mould are at #39 with the great Young Blood, which will hopefully be a big hit here next year!!! US country trio The Band Perry's If I Die Young is rather sad lyrically but the music and tempo is gorgeous and a highlight of the genre this year. And now onto my first personal chart #1 - Nadine Coyle's Insatiable is in my opinion a great pop song with brilliant production. Sure it's not particularly '2010' but it doesn't detract from my enjoyment of it. I got bored of it more quickly than I expected to, hence it limping into the top 40 here.

Onto a couple of Eurovision entries, Belgium's Tom Dice was just a man and his guitar and he provided his country with their biggest smash since 2003, proving that a nice song, sung well, really is all that you need to do well in the contest, forget about the gimmicks if you've got the voice and the song. And Iceland's Hera Bjork may only have got to #6 in my weekly chart with the Euro schlager anthem Je Ne Sais Quoi (with the greatest video of the year!) but she's worthy of an EOY top 40 place! Some charming novelty foreign language dance from Australian dance act Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup and Sweden's floptastic but lovely Eurovision entry come oh so close to making the top 30 too! The Saturdays burst back onto the scene in the summer with Missing You which like nearly all of their singles took a while to grow on me, but when it did it GREW. Great dance ballad, and rather underrated in my opinion! And finishing off this section is the brilliant Robyn with the first single from her Body Talk project, Dancing On My Own. In the sad melancholy but euphoric Robyn mould that she's best known for in the UK, Dancing On My Own was yet another triumph and a shock (to me anyway) UK top ten hit!

The Band Perry - If I Die Young

Hera Bjork - Je Ne Sais Quoi

30. Edward Maya feat Vika Jigulina - Stereo Love #2

29. Robbie Williams & Gary Barlow - Shame #1 (for 1 week)

28. Niamh Kavanagh - It’s For You #3

27. Zowie - Broken Machine #2

26. Bruno Mars - Just The Way You Are #4

25. Shackles - Breaking the Silence #1 (for 3 weeks)

24. Katy Perry feat Snoop Dogg - California Gurls #3

23. Marina & The Diamonds - Hollywood #3

22. A1 - Don’t Wanna Lose You Again #1 (for 2 weeks)

21. Caro Emerald - A Night Like This #2

Romanian dance act Edward Maya kicks off my top 30 of the year with the summer smash Stereo Love, which was of course a hit in 2009 in a lot of countries! The much hated Shame by Robbie Williams & Gary Barlow was a big hit with me, and I still love its simplicity and old fashioned melody - I'm a good loon :D I must be something of a flop Eurovision loon this year though as the second highest ESC entry comes in as low as #28! And that's Ireland's return to form (song if not quite results wise) with Niamh Kavanagh's stunning ballad It's For You! Over to New Zealand again for #27 with Zowie's Broken Machine, a cute and charming electro-pop song that spent 3 weeks at #2 in my chart!!! Bruno Mars' fantastic debut solo single, Just The Way You Are, possibly one of THE defining songs of 2010, comes in at #26 and Norwegian girl group '2nd rate Atomic Kitten' Shackles are at #25 with Breaking The Silence after topping my chart for three weeks right at the beggining of the year.

Katy Perry's highest entry and brilliant comeback single, the summery and cheery California Gurls is at #24 and Marina & The Diamond's brilliant breakthrough hit Hollywood (which somehow missed the UK top ten ) is at #23. Reformed 90's boyband A1 are still a big deal over in Norway and Don't Wanna Lose You Again was their Melodi Grand Prix entry, which sadly finished second, missing the chance to go to Eurovision (imagine the potential Facebook/Twitter reactions when casual ESC viewers watched A1 gracing their screens for Norway with a brilliant song, whilst we were pushing that steaming pile of Pete Waterman $hite). And finally some quality before the top 20 as Dutch jazz artist Caro Emerald comes in at #21 with the absolutely fantastic A Night Like This.

A1 - Don't Wanna Lose You Again

Caro Emerald - A Night Like This

:heehee:

At least they're in here! Find any other EOY charts featuring both of these songs (besides yours of course) and I'll pay you! I Like That was unfortunate to be around and in my consciousness when I'm in Eurovision loon mode, usually it would have been a safe top 5!

Cocool does hold the honour of being the only non #1 in my album chart top 20 though, and bear in mind I've only had it for 6 or 7 weeks whereas many of these albums I've been living with for much of the year!

A Night Like This is one of my favourite BJSC entries of this year, glad (and a little surprised) that it progressed to the next stage

  • Author

So...before we get into my top 20 singles that defined 2010, lets look at the first half of my favourite 10 albums of the year, in reverse order;

10. Ellie Goulding - Bright Lights

Chart run: 7-4-6-10-18-20-19-18-15-19-OUT-17-12-7-5-7-11-14-16-OUT-1-1-2

The sound of 2010 so they said, except initially I was struggling to be pulled into the hype, with the album an accomplished if not spectacular debut for me. However, I revisited it in the summer and realised that it was in fact a strong collection. But roll on xmas time and it was time for the inevitable re-release. Except, whereas most re-releases add on one killer new song and some fillers, this was very different. The 7 new songs on Bright Lights for me are better than the majority of the original album tracks! Favourites being Little Dreams, Home, Believe Me, Your Song, and of the original tracks, The Writer and Under The Sheets. A deserved top ten finish for Ellie.

9. The Saturdays - Headlines

Chart Run: 2-1-2-2-4-6-6-7-7-8-11-14-19-19

After racking up countless #2's in my single and album chart in the past couple of years, The Saturdays went one better this year scoring a #1 album and #1 single with Higher. This mini album/extended EP thing is probably my favourite thing that they've done so far, picking the best tracks from Wordshaker (as well as Forever Is Over :() and adding some brilliant new songs to proceedings too. Highlights for me would be Higher, Missing You, Karma, Ego and One Shot (Starsmith 'remix').

8. Lena Meyer-Landrut - My Cassette Player

Chart Run: 5-3-4-8-1-2-1-6-8-4-5-7-5-7-8-8-6-8-12-12-12-15-15-17-19

German singer Lena Meyer-Landrut's album slightly underwhelmed me on the first listen, with most songs sounding quite similar or nothingy. However, it grew and grew on me to the point that I'd rank everything here quite favourably. Like a more commercial Kate Nash, with strokes of Adele (there's even a cover of her song My Same on here!), I feel that this was a thoroughly decent debut and I'm looking forward to album #2 next year! Favourite tracks on here are Satellite, Not Following, Love Me, Bee and Mr Curiosity.

7. Boyzone - Brother

Chart Run: 1-1-1-1-1-1-3-4-7-8-8-11-13-14-16

Reformed Irish 90s boyband Boyzone featured in my top ten albums of 2008 with their Back Again: No Matter What hits collection, and here they are again two years later with their first new studio album since 1998's Where We Belong. With the sad passing of Stephen Gately last year, Ronan dominated this album, with many tracks feeling very Ronan-esque indeed in style. The majority of the album however was a surprisingly strong mature boyband type sound, not wildly far away from Take That's Beautiful World. And Keith and Mikey even got a shot on vocals on a couple of the tracks! It went to #1 in the UK for three weeks, and topped my chart for a surprising six weeks (the longest run of the year no less!). Favourite tracks are Gave It All Away, Love Is A Hurricane, Ruby and Let Your Wall Fall Down.

6. Rihanna - Loud

Chart Run: 1-2-2-3-4-3

Barbadian superstar Rihanna is an artist that I've grown to love over the years after disliking her in 2005, and then being indifferent in 2006. Like in 2007 turned to love in 2008, turned to obsessed in 2009, so you can only imagine my sentiment towards her in 2010! She genuinely does seem to get better with each album for me - yes I was one of the few who prefer Rated R on the whole to Good Girl Gone Bad. But Loud blows both albums out of the water. An absolutely brilliant collection of pop, urban dance, club smashes and epic ballads, yet never feeling at all disjointed or messy. Hope it goes on to be a million seller, and with what will be about 700k probably under its belt by the end of the year, it looks incredibly likely indeed! Highlights for me are What's My Name, Only Girl (In The World), California King Bed, Love The Way You Lie Pt.2 and Cheers (Drink To That).

Indeed! Je Ne Sais Quoi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Telephone, and on one millionth of the budget!

Really? Their chart run wasn't that amazing after it fell from #1. Still, #22 EOY is nothing to be ashamed of!

'Telephone' is easily the video of the year, followed by 'California Gurls'. 'Je Ne Sais Quoi' doesn't even compare.

You're not welcome in the Eurovision forum anymore
