Right now, I'd probably say it's a three horse race between the UK, France & Estonia. All three are very different and it would be too hard to call between them, all down to what they're like on the night. I could throw in some others 'if they really pull off a great performance', but they'd be too many.

Totally agree - Been listening to the album loads and i can only see those 3 really challenging for the top spot. France whilst i think will do very well could miss out on winning because the stage performance im guessing will be quite dull, The UK track will really get the crowd going which could work in our favour.

I'm still thinking the pop fanboys are getting far too excited over Estonia. It's just not universal enough as a pop song - too niche. I can see it doing well but I reckon it could be the surprise 'flop' of the night and miss the top five. I reckon it'll do similarly to Sweden.

IMO the vast majority of the songs this year are POOR.

After listening to all the entries, there's only three i genuinely LOVE:

01 UK - I'm not being bias or anything, but we have BY FAR the best entry this year.

02 Sweden

03 Estonia

I don't usually get into the songs properly until i've watched the Semi's and heard them all live though, so my initial statement may change. Probably not though.

I'm off to listen to the ESC2009 Album now. :heart: Best Eurovision year EVER.

Not a fan of Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Norway, Austria, Israel or Belarus?

Lies. 2007 is the best ESC year ever by quite a margin. Followed by 2006.

Israel, Hungary and Norway are my 04, 05 and 06. Like them, don't love them... yet. Definite growers.

Oh HELL NO.

What was so special about 2008? Save for maybe four songs I haven't listened to anything from that contest for a couple of years. The results were dreadful too! Mine (and I'll stretch back to 1999 - which had quite a few great songs)

I still have great love for the following:

Albania

Armenia

Germany (STUDIO VERSION!)

France

Greece

Israel

Iceland

Malta

Norway (of course!)

Poland (poor brave orange Isis :()

Serbia

Sweden

Slovenia

Ukraine (one of the greatest Eurovision performances of the decade I think)

2009 - Apart from Switzerland missing the final, everything was PERFECT about the contest/show/songs/results :wub:

2001 - The first contest I paid any real attention to and thus I have huge affinity to many of the songs, over half of them probably! Great results too (for me, Everybody was my favourite and the song I voted for :lol:). Rollo & King, Antique, Natasha St-Pier and Friends were all very worthy top fivers too!

2010 - Would actually be quite a fair bit lower if not for Lena! The second best song for me was Niamh Kavanagh and it didn't even finish inside my EOY top 25! Luckily, Satellite was easily the best song there and it was reflected in the results for the second year running - hoorah for common sense prevailing across Europe!

2003

2006 - Some great songs, even if nearly all of them flopped. Thank goodness for Carola reaching the top five!

2004

2007

2008

2005 - I was pleased with the winner but overall the contest was pretty low quality. Cool Vibes should have been top 3 as well! 8th - pfft...

2002 - I don't think anybody with ears could claim this to have been a classic contest. Crap winner, only 7 songs that I particularly liked (out of 24!), three of the best songs finished 2nd and joint 3rd and should have each been a place higher with Marie N in the bottom ten. At least the UK did well! I wasn't impressed with two of my favourites - Denmark and Germany - propping up the scoreboard either, I still listen to the latter FAR too often :lol:

2000 - Poor Globen, having to host with such a crap selection of songs :() Russia and Estonia saved this from being completely awful - I like Fly On The Wings Of Love but not by those two - thank goodness for XTM!

HA at posting that random post beforehand - I didn't even know I'd pressed reply, please ignore that! I decided not to include 1999 as it would be pointless to go 1 year back into the 90s but Evelin Samuel & Camille, Selma, Charlotte and Precious all still get HUGE airplay from me :wub:
I still have great love for the following:

Ukraine (one of the greatest Eurovision performances of the decade I think)

Ani Lorak - Shady Lady ^_^ (my fave Eurovision entry that year). Would've been an excellent Eurovision winner - a billion times better than bloody Dima Bilan. -_-

No Switzerland :( Era Stupendo (album version) is one of the five I still listen to, along with Hero, Divine, Hold On Be Strong and Shady Lady. I also think that the UK's entry is the worst we've ever sent, even worse than Josh!, Andy was a competent vocalist sure but the song was an absolute nothing which didn't go anywhere (I still can't really remember how it goes apart from bits of the chorus) and the performance was ridiculously tacky - disco dad on a dancefloor - exactly how I imagined it would predictably look when I first heard that he'd won.

WHAT a wasted opportunity not sending It's You by The Revelations was, it was perfect for the year as well, it would have fit perfectly with the short-lived soul-pop fad. Still would have been outshined by Dame Haukaas Storeng and her wonderful Mira Craig composition, but it wouldn't have finished last! The screeching cats from No Angels deserved that accolade all to themselves with their ear splitting vocal, even if I did used to love them - Daylight In Your Eyes :heart:

2008 Highlights

Iceland

Czech Republic

Latvia

Top 3

Kalomoira 'Secret Combination'. ROBBED. Should have won.

Charlotte Perrelli 'Hero'. :wub: One of my ALL TIME favourite Eurovision entries. 19th place was beyond ridiculous.

'QELE QELE'. :heart:

After rewatching the final perf I think I should add Russia to that list as well. The first chorus is SUCH a moment.

(Pre-contest, 2011 would currently rank here)

2002: Jessica Garlick, Sahlene, Sestre, Marie N

2001: Friends, Natasha St-Pier, Nusa Derenda

2000: Nicki French, Brainstorm

Oh god, you've set me off! (Favourite of the year in capitals)

2009 - Inga & Anush, Regina, Lovebugs, Patricia Kaas, Yohanna, Alexander Rybak, Malena Ernman, SVETLANA

2003 - Sertab, Urban Trad, t.A.T.u., Jostein Hasselgard, Birgitta Haukdal, Beth, Nicola, LOU, Claudia Beni, Rita Guerra, Jemini (more 10/10 moments but the non-amazing moments were far worse than 2009's)

2008 - Olta Boka, Sirusho, No Angels, Sebastien Tellier, Kalomoira, Bo'az, Euroband, Maria Haukaas Storeng, Isis Gee, Jelena Tomasevic, Charlotte Perelli, Rebeka Dremelj, ANI LORAK

2010 - Juliana Pasha, SAFURA, Michael von der Heide, Lena, Chanee & N'evergreen, Feminnem, Hera Bjork, Aisha (SHUSH), Paula Seling & Ovi, Milan Stankovic, Anna Bergendahl, Kristina Pelakova

2007 - Evridiki, Hanna Pakarinen, Sopho, Magdi Ruzsa, 4Fun, Natalia Barbu, Karolina, Olivia Lewis, Guri Schanke, Marija Serifovic, SEREBRO, The Ark, Alenka Gotar, Verka Serduchka

(I'll nominally put 2011 here.)

2006 - Kate Ryan, Texas Lightning, Sidsel Ben Semmane, Anna Vissi, Silvia Night, Christine Guldbransen, Dima Bilan, CAROLA, Tina Karol

2004 - Aleksandra & Konstantin (SUCH a pleasure!), Ruslana, Anjeza Shahini, Tose Proeski, Zeljko Joksimovic, Xandee, Blue Cafe, LENA PHILIPSSON

2005 - Shiri Maimon, WIG WAM (yes!), Luminita Anghel & Sistem, Nox, Vanilla Ninja, Javine, Ledina Celo, Elena Paparizou, Ortal

2002 - Jessica Garlick, Sahlene, IRA LOSCO, Sestre

Yeah, 2004 was FAR better than 2002 & 2005 thinking on it.

10/10's I'm counting as songs that reached my EOY top 40 (position in brackets), so lets have a look how many there are for each year;

1999 - Precious (11), Evelin Samuel & Camille (21), Selma (25), Charlotte Nilsson (31) -> 4

2000 - -> 0

2001 - Tanel Padar & Dave Benton (11), Michelle [Germany] (26), Lindsay D (29), Michelle [Netherlands] (39) -> 4

2002 - Ira Losco (6), Jessica Garlick (20), Sahlene (36), Corinna May (37) -> 4

2003 - Birgitta (7), Lynn (16 - was I alone in adoring this?), Fame (36) -> 3

2004 - Julie & Ludwig (12), Ruslana (15), Lena Philipsson (24) -> 3

2005 - Vanilla Ninja (12), Helena Paparizou (18) -> 2

2006 - Daz Sampson (9), Carola (12) -> 2

2007 - Scooch (7!), Serebro (10), Koldun (17 - why is nobody else raving over this Princess Di's long lost son with Bond theme production? :(), Elitsa & Stoyan (30) -> 4

2008 - Maria Haukaas Storeng (3), Charlotte Perrelli (5), Euroband (32), Paolo Meneguzzi (37) -> 4

2009 - Alexander Rybak (5), Jade Ewen (7 - was this honestly only a highlight for me? LOVED it!), Malena Ernman (13), Lovebugs (39) -> 4

2010 - Lena Meyer-Landrut (1 - first ESC EOY chart topper!), Niamh Kavanagh (28), Anna Bergendahl (33), Tom Dice (35), Hera Bjork (36) -> 5

I don't think the number of 10/10's really overall reflect how much I enjoyed each contest then, although 2005/6 weren't up to much at all in terms of year defining songs! I think it's where the amount of 9's and the general staging/feel of the performances and show come into play that differentiate the quality of each year. Last year is better than a lot of people give it credit for actually. Oddly, Sweden are yet to send my favourite entry in any year! Not even the mighty Den Vilda was - how could it be when Gina G was in the same contest! Yet they've finished in my EOY top 40 in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010!
