KE$HA

“Your Love Is My Drug”

The second highest entry in the top 200 for Ms. Sebert is her third single Your Love Is My Drug. Due to being a popular cherry-pick on the week of album Animal’s release it entered the chart some 3 months before any sort of promotion for it happened (in this case the video being released). Speaking of the video, what is going on in it? It’s just weird. I personally like it but a lot of people hate it. Just about sums up Ke$ha in general. This song is notable for being her only single to date that is about anything other than going to a club and getting drunk. It has a few metaphorical references to drugs and ends with the immortal words ‘I like your beard’ but there’s no reference to a club to be seen. Huzzah! It’s also probably her best single to date in my opinion. Unfortunately it didn’t manage to outpeak the second single Blah Blah Blah (feat. 3OH!3) but it’s quite clear which song is the more remembered of the two.

Yes, "Blah Blah Blah" is more memorable imo. It's annoyingly catchy and I love the 30h!3 verse in it. YLIMD is quite forgettable.

There's a difference between 'remembered' and 'memorable' though.

I can't speak for everybody else in the world, but I think I'll remember Blah Blah Blah more. Your Love is My Drug is a better song, but it's more normal. Blah Blah Blah was just plain ridiculous and stupid, so I remember it more at them moment. That said, one of my sisters has already forgotten Blah Blah Blah exists...

FLORENCE + THE MACHINE AND DIZZEE RASCAL
“You Got The Dirtee Love”
stand-alone single
[February 2010]

2-2-5-7-10-11-18-20-32-45-54-56-73-x(3)-68-x

~ 1,011 points // 14 weeks // #2 peak ~

The highest entry on this countdown for Dizzee Rascal and the third highest for British indie-ish pop-ish band Florence + The Machine (Florence Welch, Robert Ackroyd, Christopher Hayden, Isabella Summers, Tom Monger, Mark Saunders) is this mash-up of the former’s Dirtee Cash (#10 in 2009) and the latter’s You’ve Got The Love (#5 earlier in 2010 and one of the two entries still to come for Florence + The Machine). No studio version of the track exists, making it one of a relatively small number of exclusively live recordings to have reached the top end of the charts. It has been only been performed a few times - the most well known version (the one in the video and the one that was released) was performed at the 2010 BRIT Awards. Both artists involved picked up awards while they were there, with Florence + The Machine getting the sought-after Mastercard British Album of the Year for their début Lungs and Dizzee picking up Best British Male. As this ceremony happened on a Wednesday and the song was released immediately, it had just 4 days of sales in its opening week, but it still managed to catch up to #2 amazingly. It at first seemed set for #1 the following week but Jason Derülo had to interfere with In My Head. When this song was first released to iTunes it was titled You’ve Got The Dirtee Love which is both more grammatically correct and actually makes sense given the Florence half of the mash-up is You’ve Got The Love rather than The Source feat. Candi Staton’s preferred billing of You Got The Love. Soon iTunes caught onto their ‘error’ though, and the ‘’ve’ was dropped. All in all it was the second top ten hit for Florence + The Machine and the sixth for Dizzee Rascal.

That's held up to repeated listens far better than you'd expect... Wish it had grabbed a week at #1 somewhere although it was never going to catch "Everybody Hurts" in its first week and "In My Head" was actually quite good.

Someone at my work has You Got the Dirtee Love as his ring-tone! :o I was pleased to see people still care for the song, a year later! :D

I love the song too, and was gutted it didn't get #1. I reckon it could've done too, but it only had 4 days on sales or something on its release week, since they couldn't release the song before it had been recorded. I would've liked it to beat both Everybody Hurts and In My Head, and I liked neither song, although I love Jason Derulo, so I'm glad he got a #1 at any rate, even if it was with the wrong song.

K’NAAN
“Wavin’ Flag”
from the album “Troubadour”
[July 2010]

This was the highest selling of the batch of football songs that charted at the time of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. This could be put down to the artist in question, Somali-born Canadian-based singer and rapper K’naan (real name Keinan Warsame) being born in the continent the cup was held in for the first time, or it could also be put down to the fact it’s actually an extremely good song, rare for a football anthem. Although that in itself can be put down to the fact the song originally had nothing to do with football. The song actually existed in 2009 and was already a big hit on the Canadian Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #2, before anyone else in the world gave a crap about it. The football related lyrics in the version release here and in the video above are only there because the version released worldwide is the Coca-Cola Celebration Mix of the track which has additional lyrics. A third version of the song exists which features Black Eyed Pea will.i.am and Frenchman David Guetta. Two versions of this song by other artists made the UK top 200 during 2010 as well - one ominously credited to ‘Various Artists’ charted at #89 in the height of football song hype and one by Young Artists For Haiti made #104. Oh, I forgot to mention, this was Canada’s chosen song for the Haiti Relief fund. The charity version made #1 on the Canadian Billboard Hot 100 so this song was already a top 2 hit twice in Canada before anyone else in the world gave a crap about it. They’re ahead of the times over in Canada. K’naan actually made his UK chart début 2 weeks before the release of Wavin’ Flag, oddly in collaboration with Keane who released Stop For A Minute as the lead and only single from their ‘album’ (8 track EP to be technical) Night Train. This song got to #40. The hype cloud around this song caused another K’naan song called Bang Bang (feat. Adam Levine) to briefly chart in the iTunes top 100 but it never charted officially, nor did the album Troubadour. Still one more football song to come on this countdown. Gooddelta will be pleased.

I love Wavin' Flag! So happy and anthemic! :D

And it's so true what you were saying about nobody else in the world caring about it for ages. I check what's #1 in other countries regularly, and I remember seeing Wavin' Flag at #1 in Canada for ages. Except I never bothered to listen to it, because it was by "Young Artists for Haiti" or something, so I presumed it was a boring song. Hopefully I give charity songs at least one listen in the future before dismissing them.

NE-YO
“Beautiful Monster”
from the album “Libra Scale”
[August 2010]

~ 1,027 points // 15 weeks // #1 peak ~

The highest of the songs which can be described as ‘non-#1s’ is this, the seventh top ten hit and third #1 by US singer Ne-Yo (real name Shaffer Smith) Beautiful Monster. The song was released as the first single from his fourth studio album Libra Scale and continued the trend of Ne-Yo scoring a UK #1 with the lead single from each of his albums released on an even year - So Sick from 2006 album In My Own Words was his first #1 and Closer from 2008’s Year Of The Gentleman was his second. However, his 2007 album Because Of You’s lead single (also entitled Because Of You) only made #4. Ne-Yo has largely retained his initial success here while it’s faded over time in the USA. So Sick made #1 in both territories but Closer made just #7 Stateside and this was by all means totally rejected by the Americans, making a pathetic #53. Ne-Yo is showing signs of falling out of the realm of UK popularity though, as Libra Scale failed to make the top 10 peaking at #11 and follow-up single One In A Million only made #20. Although it made #1 this did fall very quickly (although stuttering at #56 for 3 weeks before dropping out) so perhaps we won’t see a Ne-Yo #1 when the next one is due in 2012.

Almost up to the top 75 now :P
I might be wrong, but I think Beautiful Monster is the only US #1 in 2010 that spent less than 10 weeks in the top 40.

SHAKIRA FEAT. FRESHLYGROUND
“Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)”
from the album “Listen Up! - The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album”
[June 2010]

38-39-27-25-25-21-34-35-37-39-38-46-47-59-67-79-82-81-86-95-93-x

~ 1,028 points // 21 weeks // #21 peak ~

So just missing out on the top 75 by 12 points is the highest football song on this countdown, Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) by Colombian singer Shakira (full name Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll - I’m not making the Hispanic name mistake again) featuring South African band Freshlyground (Zolani Mahola, Simon Attwell, Peter Cohen, Kyla Smith, Julio Sigauque, Josh Hawks, Seredeal Scheepers). This was the song promoted as the ‘Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Song’ although was ultimately outshined in the chart by K’naan’s Wavin’ Flag. However, it was this song that surprisingly lasted on the chart for the longest time after the World Cup, despite its low peak of #21. It was still in the top 100 some 3 and a half months after England left the Cup, which saw the end for most of the ‘classics’ (David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seeds’ Three Lions, New Order’s World In Motion etc.). This song’s lack of major success here makes the UK somewhat of an outcast in Europe. Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) was one of the biggest hits of 2010 in Europe and made at the very least top 10 in almost every other European country. Ah well. It still had a good run here, spending 11 weeks in the top 40 and a further 10 in the top 100.

Aside from his massive 2007 4-week #1 hit Beautiful Girls the equally massive (in a different way) US singer and rapper Sean Kingston (real name Kisean Anderson) has just one more UK top ten hit to his name. Unfortunately, instead of the genuinely good Fire Burning which almost made up for the awfulness of his #1 but alas only made #12 in 2009, it’s this absolute turd. This actually makes Beautiful Girls sound good in comparison. They made a contemporary song out of ‘eenie, meeny, miney, mo’. That really happened. Also it has Justin Bieber on it. And it somehow managed to become the second top 10 hit for both artists involved in the UK despite only making #15 in the USA, where you’d expect Sean Kingston to do better and you’d also expect Justin Bieber to do better, but you’d especially expect them to do better together. Ugh. I find it hard to forgive this country for its appalling taste in Sean Kingston songs. Whatever. At least we haven’t seen much of Justin Bieber since this, it was the last of his three songs that could be described as hits (after his own One Time which made #11 and Baby (feat. Ludacris) which made #3 and is still to come on this countdown, proving once and for all there is no God. Baby makes this sound good in comparison and I’ve already had to use that phrase to make this song sound bad). I really hope the UK is now past making these sorts of songs hits. New year, blank slate I suppose. There haven’t been any TOO questionable new top 10 hits so far.

Gosh, I really didn't like Eenie Meenie. Like, not at all. :(

The best from both artists are One Time and Fire Burning, in my opinion.

They're the only bearable ones tbh. Actually that's a bit harsh, I'd rather listen to a Sean Kingston album than "One Time" :P
