DAVID GUETTA FEAT. KID CUDI

“Memories”

Opening the top 40 is the first of two top 40 entries from David Guetta and the higher of two entries in the longlist for American rapper Kid Cudi (real name Scott Mescudi), the other being his own Erase Me (feat. Kanye West) at #506. Memories was the fourth single taken from Guetta’s album One Love. It’s another example of a song which experienced big success in the chart despite being snubbed by Radio 1, which came as a surprise as Radio 1 had previously (and has since) playlisted everything David Guetta touched, but it seemed that one flop single threw him off the list of acceptable artists to playlist (the previous single One Love (feat. Estelle) only made it to #46). It’s not even as if they had a big grudge against Kid Cudi, with them happily A-Listing his Crookers collaboration Day ‘N’ Nite in early 2009 and even making it the Weekend Anthem at one point. They just refused to playlist Memories even after it had proven its potential as a huge hit. It’s entirely possible this could have been another top 10 hit for Guetta had it not been for the snubbage. As it was, it became Guetta’s sixth top 20 hit (and he has amassed a further 5 since, including 2011’s Sweat (Snoop Dogg vs. David Guetta)) and Kid Cudi’s second. Past his début Kid Cudi hasn’t had an awful lot of showing in the UK chart - his second single Make Her Say (feat. Kanye West and Common) only made #67 and his first album Man On The Moon - The End Of Day made a lousy #119. The lead single from his 2010 second album Man On The Moon II - The Legend Of Mr. Rager, the aforementioned Erase Me, only did a bit better peaking at #58, though the album itself oddly peaked higher than its predecessor, but still only limped to #88. Cudi has one other UK top 100 hit to his name, a featured credit on Kevin Rudolf’s Welcome To The World (from 2009). Though Rudolf’s previous single Let It Rock (feat. Lil Wayne) made it all the way to #5, poor Kid Cudi simply couldn’t benefit from this and that single flopped its way to #77. So Memories was a welcome return to the UK chart for Kid Cudi, but will we ever see him in the chart again?

JASON DERÜLO
“In My Head”
from the album “Jason Derülo”
[March 2010]

1-3-5-7-8-11-13-20-24-23-34-35-41-49-49-54-61-64-66-67-85-88-93-89-93-x

After Jason Derülo went to #3 in 2009 with début single Whatcha Say, most people assumed he’d go on to become a one hit wonder. The follow-up In My Head receiving at first negligible airplay didn’t do much to prevent this. I personally always thought he’d have at least one other big hit. When In My Head was first released to iTunes, it’s fair to say I thought I’d been proven wrong for some time as it had an incredibly slow start. But over the week, it eventually climbed to the top spot and was there for long enough to claim the official #1 as well. It wasn’t certain for the official #1 right from the start - in the first few midweek sales flashes Florence + The Machine and Dizzee Rascal looked set to make their You Got The Dirtee Love the first live recording to reach #1 in years - but it finished the week with a fairly respectable lead, albeit not that impressive total sales (68,134 to Florence & Dizzee’s 61,788). It barely managed to scrape a place as one of the forty biggest selling singles of 2010, coming in 40th with some 381,000 total sales. Its chart run was a peculiar one at first - after entering at #1 it dropped to 3, then to 5 then 7. The next week it should have been #9 to continue the pattern but instead managed #8, though the pattern continued the next two weeks as it dropped to 11 then 13. Had this pattern continued it should have scored 50 weeks in the top 100, but in reality it only managed (exactly) half of that. Some people say this song sounds almost exactly like Just Dance by Lady GaGa feat. Colby O’Donis. Those people are correct. It’s still a pretty good song though, clone or not. Though this remains Jason’s only #1, he still has one more song much higher in the chart that is easily his biggest hit to date despite only making #2… can you guess what it is? (It’s not exactly that hard)

1. Rihanna can do good ballads imo. Some of them are amongst her best songs imo. :)

2. Memories is AMAZING!!!!

3. In My Head is :puke: So generic, I really hate it. One of the worst songs of the year imo. :( Ridin' Solo, on the other hand, was one of the best!! :D

If you compare "In My Head" Video you can see he's quite clearly copied "Like I Love You" By Justin Timberlake concept wise. I'm surprised no-one noted it! :D

TAIO CRUZ
“Dynamite”
from the album “The Rokstarr Collection”
[september 2010]

Much like Jay Sean’s Down (feat. Lil Wayne), this song represents a British artist adopting a more American (read: generic) sound in order to gain success over in the US. Well, he’d already sort of done it by adding a flimsy rap from Ludacris for the US release of his 2009 UK #1 Break Your Heart which amazingly managed to top the American charts as well, but Dynamite was the first new material we heard from Taio post-America and to the unknowledgeable, Taio Cruz is just another in a long line of generic American contemporary R&B / pop stars. Sigh. He actually used to produce very good songs as well, such as his 2008 UK #5 hit (he existed back then?) Come On Girl (feat. Luciana). Nonetheless, Dynamite is Taio’s biggest success both in the US and the UK, becoming his second #1 here and peaking at #2 but hanging around on the chart much longer than its predecessor in the USA. In fact, it’s actually still in the Billboard Hot 100 for a ridiculous 44th week as I type, extremely impressive considering those crazy Americans with their dumb exclusion laws usually drop a song after just 20 weeks if it’s not still in the top 50. Thankfully the UK chart doesn’t have these ridiculous rules. Dynamite only spent one week at the top spot here compared to the three Break Your Heart (minus Ludacris) managed, but it did actually come very close to returning to #1 in its fourth week and spent five weeks in the top three, while Break Your Heart dropped to #4 after its stint at #1. In the UK Dynamite is technically a token new song from a greatest hits album as strange as that sounds. As I mentioned in the commentary for Dirty Picture oh so long ago the US version of Rokstarr was vastly different from the UK version and was released here as The Rokstarr Collection, essentially a ‘best of’ of his first two UK albums. This is the last song on the list with less than 20 chart weeks in 2010. This song came 51st in the Top 100 Downloads of All Time.

I'm a bit meh about Taio Cruz tbh. Dirty Picture is amazing, as is Take Me Back.

I went to the US on holiday last summer, I cannot describe with words how big Taio was at the time. I did go there pretty much inbetween the peaks in popularity of Break Your Heart and Dynamite though. I think Dynamite was a much bigger hit than Break Your Heart there, even though it only got #2.

As for the song itself (which happens to be on blast in my sister's room at this moment in time ), I did like it at first, but I'm a bit bored of it now. However, I LOVE the Mixin Marc remix. It's a lot better, and much more catchy, and euphoric I guess. And I only hear it very occasionally on the radio, which helps. There's also a remix of it where J-Lo does the second verse, and then harmonizes with Taio for the rest of the song, which I also much prefer. It sounds really nice. :)

CHERYL COLE
“Parachute”

The highest entry for everyone’s favourite / least favourite X Factor judge and Girl Aloud Cheryl Cole is her third solo single, Parachute. There’s not much to comment on here. Apologies. I must have writer’s block.

I haven't heard Parachute in AGES! :o I must listen to it again. I remember being really fed up of it at the time when it spent what seemed like an eternity at the top of the chart. :(

It's probably not that bad though, I can just barely remember it! :o Fight For This Love is still all over the radio, and I listen to 3 Words all the time because I love it, but Parachute has disappeared from my life! :o

EDIT: Listened to it now. It's quite nice. I can see why I got bored of it. It's almost like a lullaby (which is a good, and a bad thing, I guess). It's not the sort of song you'd've imagined being a hit either, at least not in 2010's chart climate. I guess that's one good thing about being Cheryl, you can release songs like 3 Words and Parachute which a lot of radio stations would avoid normally, but since you're Cheryl they get played regardless.

Also, random piece of trivia here, apparently Parachute got to #1 on the airplay chart in Romania!! :o

Also, another thing about Parachute, don't know if it's just me, but the percussion, oddly enough, makes me imagine soldiers marching to war. The music also does make me imagine a parachute falling through the sky, although I don't know if I would've imagined that if the song wasn't called Parachute.

Thanks for taking me down memory lane, I finally clicked on this thread to see what it actually was, and it is amazing. The amount of work you put into this is incredible, and I was reminded of some songs I liked at the time. Well done :).

YOUNG MONEY FEAT. LLOYD
“BedRock”
from the album “We Are Young Money”
[January 2010]

61-40-34-28-27-22-18-18-12-9-19-16-18-20-22-29-33-45-63-63-73-84-86-91-x

In certain corners of the internet most of you BuzzJackers probably wouldn’t know about (it’s called 4chan but I suggest you don’t Google it), there are some rules known as the Rules of the Internet. There are only three rules everyone agrees on. Rule 1: Do not talk about /b/. Rule 2: Do NOT talk about /b/. And finally, rule 34: There is porn of it, no exceptions. Various artists signed to Lil Wayne’s record label Young Money Entertainment, including Lil Wayne himself, Drake and Nicki Minaj, recorded this song as the collective name ‘Young Money’ and applied a slightly altered version of rule 34 to help them. They took a harmless, not-at-all-sexual cartoon (The Flintstones) and made it sex-related. Because of this song, when you hear the word ‘Bedrock’ you don’t think of the town Fred and the gang live in, you think of American singer Lloyd (full name Lloyd Polite) asking you to call him Mr. Flintstone and saying he can ‘make your bed rock’. Another corrupted childhood memory! Anyway, this song’s success in the UK came as a bit of a shock to me at least - while the whole Young Money crew are massive in the USA, the three most prominent members have between them never made the UK top 20 with one of their own songs - Lil Wayne’s best was 2008 #26 hit Lollipop (feat. Static Major), Drake went to #24 in 2010 with Find Your Love and Nicki Minaj got the closest any of Young Money have managed in 2011 when she took Moment 4 Life (feat. Drake) to #22. But despite the lack of hit power in any of the component artists, BedRock was a genuinely quite big hit, making it as high as #9. Apart from one week where it stalled at #18 it climbed every single week up to its peak, a real old-fashioned chart run which came as somewhat of a breath of fresh air among a sea of début/peaks. Naturally the song fared a bit better on the US Billboard Hot 100 where it went all the way to #2. Young Money as a collective also had one other top 10 hit in the USA, their previous single Every Girl (yes, that song is also about sex) having made #10, but BedRock remains the only UK hit credited to Young Money. The collective’s album We Are Young Money also charted at #9 in the USA but failed to even go top 100 here.

Oh, I don't know, I'll have this thing done EVENTUALLY. Let's set a deadline of New Year's Day 2012 :P

I found this funny poll about Bedrock: http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedCon...threadid=77884#

It's just which is the corniest line in the song. Quite a lot of gems in there.

One of Nicki Minaj's lines "I just be coming off the top...ASBESTOS!!!!" is in there, but I actually think it's quite clever, cos, you know, how they remove asbestos from buildings because they discovered it's dangerous, so Nicki is saying she's coming off, like the asbestos is coming off everywhere. Okay, I think I ruined it now. Just I was chuffed when I realized she was saying "asbestos", since I always though she was saying "the bestest", or something like that, which would be the most pathetic rhyme ever.

The most disturbing of Nicki's lines is: "Maybe it's time to put this p*ssy on your sideburns". Um, WHO does that, exactly!?!? Who does she think she is? Ke$ha?

Edited by Eric_Blob

Bedrock is really the best example of a grower (and a chart climber). I hated it when I first heard it, but now I quite like it, mostly Nicki Minaj's bits. And I've never paid that much attention to the lyrics either.

Weird song.

Another lyric I always found weird was when Drake says "I love your sushi roll". Um, what exactly does he mean by that? I assume it's probably something sexual, but I just can't make any connections.

And I thought most people would know 4chan. I've actually never been on there, but I hear it discussed so much everywhere.

Edited by Eric_Blob

I've been on there a few times. It's not nice. Well, /b/ at least. I haven't really tried any of the others, seeing as it's /b/ that has the reputation, and I'm not that interested in the actual subject matter.

I also don't like their style.
