 Worryingly, I actually did! :o

One of my favourite songs ever.

A random piece of trivia which only I care about, it actually got #3 in the European year-end charts for 2010! :o

And 34 weeks in the top 10 for the BEPs. I really miss those days. They're still doing really well, but I'm not even very confident that The Time will still be in the top 75 by the time Just Can't Get Enough does!!

ALEXANDRA BURKE
“Broken Heels”
from the album “Overcome”
[December 2009]

-19-12-10-8-11-17-21-25-32-41-46-51-53-49-47-68-82-91-96-98-x

~ 1,143 points // 20 weeks // #8 peak ~

Another appearance for Miss X Factor 2008, Alexandra Burke (who with a quick Ctrl+F on the Word document I’m storing all these commentaries on, I’ve found I’ve mentioned far too many times on the commentaries of other unrelated artists, I’ll endeavour for this to be the second last commentary I mention her on, though she still has one song to come in All Night Long (feat. Pitbull)). Broken Heels is her only bearable single to date in my opinion, so it of course follows that it’s her least successful single, aside from the flop #16 peaking The Silence which Syco saw fit to release a full 59 weeks after the release of her début album Overcome. They claimed The Silence was the second single from the deluxe edition of Overcome despite the fact it appeared on the original edition and in fact charted at #95 on the strength of album cherry-picks in the first week of the album’s release, three places ahead of later #4 hit All Night Long. With All Night Long they released a new single mix featuring Pitbull and they claimed they did the same with The Silence but the ‘new single mix’ turned out to be pretty much exactly the same song, plus a choir. Anyway, enough about The Silence, that’s totally unrelated. Broken Heels is actually a pretty good song, but nonetheless it failed to come close to the #1 successes of previous singles Hallelujah and Bad Boys (feat. Flo Rida), only peaking at #8. Even All Night Long was #8 before the Pitbull version was released, suggesting it would have outpeaked Broken Heels anyway, even if released in its original form. This is despite All Night Long being terrible. Sigh.

Wow. I actually found Broken Heels to be pretty boring tbh. For me Alexandra singles go:

All Night Long>>>>Start Without You>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Hallelujah>>>>The Silence>>Broken Heels>>>>Bad Boys

Bad Boys was such a mess of a song tbh. All Night Long and Start Without You are pop music at their best imo!

OLLY MURS
“Please Don’t Let Me Go”
from the album “Olly Murs”
[september 2010]

1-4-5-12-16-23-28-35-39-45-54-68-39-41-49-55-44-

~ 1,159 points // 17 weeks // #1 peak ~

The higher of 2009 X Factor runner-up Olly Murs’ two entries in the top 100 is, naturally, his début single which had a bit more than the 5 weeks follow-up Thinking Of Me had in order to get a place on this chart. Please Don’t Let Me Go kickstarted a surprisingly successful début era for Mr. Murs, with him turning out to be the only real star of the 2009 series unless you count Jedward with their #2 flash-in-the-pan hit, #80 follow-up, #17 album and recent announcement as the Irish representation in the 2011 Eurovision Song Contest (no, I’m serious - the UK aren’t much better, we’re sending Blue). Olly was significantly more successful with his #2 peaking but very high selling first album Olly Murs and his début single reaching #1, the follow-up getting to #4. The third single Heart On My Sleeve is currently #68 on the chart as I write this, but is almost certain to climb and become Murs’ third top 40 hit, one more than series winner Joe McElderry has managed. It’s also Olly’s fourth top 70 hit rather than his third - on the release week of Please Don’t Let Me Go the B-Side This One’s For The Girls attracted enough sales in its own right to become a #69 hit. That seems a bit unfair to me given JLS’ first B-Side Umbrella would easily have gone top 40 in the release week of their début Beat Again but the vast majority of its sales were disallowed from the chart for unknown reasons and it charted just outside of the top 100. Ah well. Olly Murs was the first X Factor protégé to be marketed to the Jason Mraz crowd, possibly in the hopes of scoring a hit that actually lasted on the charts. At first it looked like this would be out of the chart with speed, spending only 3 weeks top 10 and initially just 9 weeks top 40, but it rebounded and re-entered the top 40 on two further occasions (at #39 both times coincidentally), extending its chart life long enough for it to rack up 21 chart weeks. That’s not awful, considering Joe McElderry’s Ambitions only scored a pathetic 5 weeks.

THE SATURDAYS FEAT. FLO RIDA
“Higher”
from the album “Headlines!”
[August 2010]

86-x(2)-62-49-22-25-24-22-25-22-10-15-20-20-31-35-45-42-

~ 1,162 points // 17 weeks // #10 peak ~

The coming together of two bitter (ish) chart rivals provided The Saturdays with their eighth top 10 single out of 9 releases, though their second lowest peaking single aside from the #22 Work, plus a fifth top 10 hit for Flo Rida. Three of Flo Rida’s top 10 hits are #1s, the odd ones out being this and his début hit Low (feat. T-Pain) which peaked at #2 but is still arguably his best-known song. Two of Flo Rida’s #1s (the two in his own right - 2009’s Right Round (feat. Ke$ha) and 2010’s Club Can’t Handle Me (feat. David Guetta) which is still to come in this countdown) happened to be at #1 in the release weeks of singles by The Saturdays. As it happens, Right Round was the only one that denied The Saturdays of a #1 by keeping their Comic Relief Depeche Mode cover Just Can’t Get Enough at #2, as when Club Can’t Handle Me was #1 The Saturdays’ Missing You was actually at #3, but nonetheless Radio 1 chart show host Reggie Yates informed Flo Rida over the phone that he’d cruelly denied The Saturdays their first #1 hit on two different occasions. Fast forward a bit and a quick rap by him, plus an intro in which he names each of The Saturdays pretty much in order of significance - Frankie, Mollie, Unavanessarochelle (for they are all one insignificance) - has been tacked onto The Saturdays’ ninth single Higher for its single release. This version was held back from release resulting in an unusual chart run where sales of the original non-Flo Rida version floated between #22 and #25 for 6 weeks before it suddenly jumped up to #10. It was a real fight for the top 10 for this, with will.i.am and Nicki Minaj’s Check It Out not far behind at #11, but it nonetheless just about got The Saturdays another top 10. It should be noted though that despite being their second lowest peaker it’s their 3rd longest chart runner, its tally of 24 weeks trailing only Up’s 36 and Ego’s 28. Interestingly, with just 8 top 10 singles The Saturdays have had singles peak at 7 positions within the top 10. They don’t yet have a #6, a #7 or most importantly a #1, but all of their top 10 hits have peaked at different numbers except Just Can’t Get Enough and Forever Is Over which both made #2.

SEE. I've caught up now.

Edited by Bray

Higher is brilliant.

I still remember being shocked at how early it started charting too. Even in the first week after the album was released it went top 50 on iTunes, so from that moment it was clearly going to be big! :D

I really did like Missing You, but I wonder if they released Higher first, if that could've got them their first #1. I like both songs a lot, but most people seem to prefer Higher.

SWEDISH HOUSE MAFIA FEAT. PHARRELL
“One (Your Name)”
from the album “Until One”
[August 2010]

7-9-11-12-13-14-19-19-26-30-34-40-45-52-61-65-93-x

~ 1,167 points // 17 weeks // #7 peak ~

Coming in 59th place on this countdown is my personal favourite song of the year, One (Your Name), the second appearance from house super-group Swedish House Mafia. This was the first of 2 songs released by the trio of Swedish DJs under this name. It started its life as an instrumental simply known as One, but when the time came for its single release they added the obligatory vocals seemingly necessary to get radio to play your single. The chosen vocalist was Pharrell (full name Pharrell Williams) of the band N.E.R.D, who attempted to stage a comeback in 2010 but failed miserably with lead single Hot-N-Fun (feat. Nelly Furtado) only making #49 and album Nothing only getting to #83. His vocal contribution was not really a proper vocal (it’s simply the lines ‘I wanna know your name / You just kill me, could you at least do that? / I wanna know your name / Or better yet stand there and just do that’ repeated ad infinitum) but it seems to add quite a lot to the song for me. It sounds great as an instrumental but a lot better still with the vocals. Anyway, One (Your Name) entered the chart at #7, though don’t let this deceive you into thinking it had low first week sales. Despite only being the seventh best seller, it still managed to sell (exactly) 50,000 copies that week, one of the highest weekly sales for a #7 in the 21st century. This was aided by the fact that there were three other big new entries ahead of it in the same week. It spent a full 8 weeks in the top 20 before starting to fall quickly.

One is an incredible song!!! I remember it entered the top 10 the same week as I Need Air. That was a great week...

I generally love that type of European music to be honest (hence why I also love Only Girl, which essentially seems like a pop remix of One ).

I preferred Miami 2 Ibiza personally though. I think I actually put it in my top 10 of 2010! One would probably be somewhere in my top 30.

Impressive Stats for the BEP - even though I think they are $h!t.

2010 was a really really bad year for mainstream music.

I love both Swedish House Mafia songs, but 'Miami 2 Ibiza' is better because of its Tinie Tempah feature

B.O.B FEAT. BRUNO MARS
“Nothin’ On You”
from the album “The Adventures Of Bobby Ray”
[May 2010]

1-2-2-8-12-17-18-22-29-33-37-40-43-53-70-76-93-100-96-97-x(1)-96-96-x

~ 1,181 points // 22 weeks // #1 peak ~

At #58 is a song which introduced 2 new artists from the US to the UK - B.o.B and then-new singer Bruno Mars (real name Peter Hernandez). B.o.B had technically already seen some small recognition in the UK before he even became popular in the USA by way of featuring on Giggs’ #60 hit Don’t Go There but this song was the first we ever heard of Bruno Mars who would go on to have another top 3 hit as a featured artist (Travie McCoy’s #3 Billionaire) and two #1s in his own right (Just The Way You Are and 2011’s Grenade) plus a #1 album (Doo-Wops & Hooligans). Anyway, Nothin’ On You was also the first the USA had heard of either artist and became a big #1 hit there, though it was outshined in every factor bar peak position by its follow-up Airplanes (feat. Hayley Williams). That song only got to #2 in the USA but sold a lot more than Nothin’ On You in total and stayed on the chart for much longer. The same can be said about the UK chart except it got to #1 here. In fact, it got to #1 just eight weeks after Nothin’ On You did, one of the shortest gaps between first #1 and second #1 in chart history. The wait to B.o.B’s third UK #1 was a bit longer, not coming until February 2011 when he had a featured credit on Jessie J’s #1 hit Price Tag. Nothin’ On You only had 1 week at the top spot before being dethroned by Dizzee Rascal’s Dirtee Disco (feat. Daniel Pearce), but it seemed a lock for a return to #1 the next week… until David Guetta and Chris Willis crept ahead at the last second with Gettin’ Over You (feat. Fergie and LMFAO). In a way it’s a good thing it was denied a return to #1 as it would have been on extremely low sales (47,553 to be precise, which would have been the lowest sales week for a #1 the entire year) and it would in all likelihood have dropped from #1 to #8 in its fourth week. It still dropped from #2 to #8 but this doesn’t look anywhere near as bad. This is one of a couple of entries in the top 200 where despite the song not being a cover, it had already previously charted because of an opportunistic cover of the song released in the wait time between radio premiere and release to attempt to ‘steal’ sales from the original. Vandarth’s cover of Nothin’ On You reached #97 the week before the release of B.o.B’s version (and was #99 the previous week). Most of these ‘fake’ versions aren’t allowed to chart, or at least they weren’t in 2010 as the rules seem to have been relaxed a bit by the OCC so far in 2011, but a few managed to get through the radar. As it happens the next entry also had a fake version chart in the top 100 prior to release…

Yes, I am going to post 2 more entries today.

Nothin' On You is probably the best Bruno Mars song I've heard, but probably the worst B.o.B. song I've heard.

SIDNEY SAMSON FEAT. WIZARD SLEEVE
“Riverside (Let’s Go!)”
stand-alone single
[January 2010]

2-3-5-5-13-17-23-30-40-44-39-42-46-49-67-76-77-66-67-x

~ 1,208 points // 19 weeks // #2 peak ~

…and this one didn’t even get to #1. It may as well have been a #1 as it sold a massive 97,410 copies in its first week, but this song is nonetheless still a #2 hit. The original version of this song was a very strange song. It was originally credited to only Dutch DJ Sidney Samson and originally titled just Riverside without the additional parenthesised ‘Let’s Go!’ and it essentially consisted of a house instrumental with a clip of 2Pac saying ‘riverside, motherfucker’ (from the film Juice in case you’re wondering) every now and then. To become a UK hit it was aided by a couple of additional rap verses by US rap trio Wizard Sleeve (Alex Cruz/Lex One, Michael Barnett/Mike Beatz, Pedro Calcano/Pusher FM) and a video with lots of half-naked women. I personally prefer the original version, which was already a hit back in 2009 in Australia (#9), Belgium Wallonia (#1) and Samson’s native Netherlands (#8). The fake version of this that charted was a cover by someone called XNRG, with a featured credit given to someone called Alex K. This version went under the original title of just Riverside and charted at #94 the week before this version was released. This along with Iyaz’s début hit Replay, released in the same week and selling 106,237 to get a narrow-ish lead at #1, started 2010 off with big sales straight from the start. 2011 has fared even better so far, as we’re only 9 weeks in and we’ve already seen the #1 sell over 100,000 five times (including going over 150,000 once). This is still the only top 100 hit by both Sidney Samson and Wizard Sleeve, but if we can count this as a chart hit for 2Pac (which we definitely can’t) it was the first time he’d been on the chart since 2007 #21 hit Pac’s Life (feat. Ashanti and T.I.) and his first top 10 hit since 2005 #1 Ghetto Gospel (feat. Elton John), both notably released after his death.
About XNRG, I actually have cover versions of Seek Bromance by Tim Berg and One by Swedish House Mafia by them on my mp3 player! I think they're actually like a serious group, because they've had songs on the Clubland albums before. I haven't listened to any of their other songs, but their version of Seek Bromance is actually really good, and I prefer it to the original now. Their version of One is pretty good aswell. They're kind of like remixes, except the give themselves the main credit on the track.

KATY PERRY
“Teenage Dream”
from the album “Teenage Dream”
[september 2010]

2-2-3-3-6-9-16-19-25-33-34-34-50-67-71-72-59-

~ 1,212 points // 17 weeks // #2 peak ~

The second of five entries for Mrs. Russell Brand in the top 200 is the second single and title track of her third studio album Teenage Dream. As someone who hated her 2008 commercial breakthrough I Kissed A Girl but loved the three follow-up singles, I was unsurprised to find myself liking this after hating its predecessor California Gurls (feat. Snoop Dogg). Annoyingly that song has finished higher, but it was also released a lot earlier so it had a slight advantage. Anyway, one thing that some people criticised about California Gurls was how the chorus sounded eerily similar to Ke$ha’s TiK ToK. This may have been because both songs were produced by Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco, with the former also having extra production from Dr. Luke’s often production partner Max Martin. For Teenage Dream Katy decided to go for the same three producers a second time - hey, it worked the first time - and so we were left with another song whose chorus sounds almost exactly the same as TiK ToK’s although slightly slower. Teenage Dream became her third #1 hit in her native USA, spending two weeks at the summit and has since become a top 10 hit again with a fairly quick off the mark cover from Glee Cast selling enough downloads to net them their second (only second?) top 10 hit at #8. However, it stalled at #2 for two weeks here, once behind Olly Murs’ Please Don’t Let Me Go then again behind Alexandra Burke’s Start Without You (feat. Laza Morgan). The Glee version was only released in 2011 here and made a not-too-impressive #36, though Glee can claim three top 10 hits in the UK as in addition to the worldwide hit Don’t Stop Believin’ (#2 here) they’ve scored 2 additional #9 hits here in the forms of Halo / Walking On Sunshine and Total Eclipse Of The Heart (feat. Jonathan Groff). With our chart being based totally on sales and no airplay, it’s much easier for them to score top 10 hits here than in the USA, where they’d have 7 top 10 hits including 2 #1s if the airplay element was removed. Right, enough about Glee as they still have an entry coming on this countdown. This song came 97th in the Top 100 Downloads of All Time.

CHERYL COLE
“Fight For This Love”
from the album “3 Words”
[October 2009]

-11-26-33-37-37-42-43-36-40-49-51-40-43-51-50-65-73-70-70-81-92-90-86-84-93-x(10)-80-97-x(6)-57-83-x

~ 1,219 points // 29 weeks // #11 peak ~

Cheryl Cole’s second highest entry is her début solo single Fight For This Love, which got to #1 for 2 weeks back in October 2009. Being essentially an X Factor act, though she’s only a judge and not a former contestant, most people assumed this song would peak and then disappear promptly. Clearly that wasn’t the case as it went on to sell over 900,000 copies and spend an impressive 39 weeks in the top 100, going no lower than #51 for the first 25 of those weeks. It scored two re-entries to the top 40 in 2010, one of them (can’t remember which one) because of a hilarious performance of the song by Rufus Hound on the second series of Let’s Dance For Comic Relief, re-named Let’s Dance For Sport Relief last year because Comic Relief only happens every 2 years. Hound went on to win the contest with his drag act and so far on the third series this year, it seems likely another drag act will win this year, with Russell Kane performing to Beyoncé’s Crazy In Love. This song came 4th in the Top 100 Downloads of All Time.

I'M NOW CAUGHT UP AGAIN.

The first re-entry was after the BRITs performance where it stayed there for two weeks. ^_^ Great that it's finished so high, too! :cheer:

Oh yeah. For some reason I thought for a second it won Best British Single but I just looked it up and Beat Again won that.
