DAVID GUETTA FEAT. AKON

“Sexy Bitch”

from the album “One Love”

This song, like French DJ Guetta’s previous single When Love Takes Over (feat. Kelly Rowland), was added to iTunes midway through the week, leading to a seemingly low début of #21 (When Love Takes Over made #7) before climbing to #1 in its second week. In fact, none of Guetta’s #1s have entered the chart there - Sexy Bitch was his second of 4 #1s, the other 2 both coming in 2010. Gettin’ Over You (David Guetta and Chris Willis feat. Fergie and LMFAO) climbed from #41 to #1 due to a chart quirk (more on that later) and Club Can’t Handle Me (Flo Rida feat. David Guetta) entered the chart at #5 before climbing to #2 then to #1. Anyhow, the electro house collaboration between Guetta and US R&B singer Akon (real name Aliaune Thiam) was one of the huge hits of 2009 leading to it charting enough in 2010 to make this countdown. The original song was a little… offensive to be played on radio and TV, so an edited cleaner version titled Sexy Chick exists. In case you’re wondering at all, this song was Akon’s third #1, following 2005’s Lonely and 2006’s Smack That (feat. Eminem).

ELLIE GOULDING
“The Writer”
from the album “Lights”
[July 2010]

68-58-45-19-29-40-50-77-x

~ 422 points // 8 weeks // #19 peak ~

The first appearance on the countdown (unless you count Under The Sheets at #357 and Tinie Tempah collaboration Wonderman at #448) for supposed ‘2010’s big thing’ Ellie Goulding (formally Elena Goulding). The British singer won the BBC Sound of 2010 poll beating off competition from artists such as Marina & The Diamonds and Hurts. She was also named the winner of the Critics’ Choice award at the 2010 BRIT Awards. The Writer was released as the third proper single (not counting hype single Under The Sheets) released from the singer’s début album Lights which made #1 in the album chart. Despite a slow start to its chart run, it did outpeak previous single Guns And Horses (a #26 hit), though it came nowhere near the #4 success of first proper single Starry Eyed or the recent #2 hit Your Song (an Elton John cover) from the deluxe edition of her album, titled Bright Lights.

LIL WAYNE FEAT. EMINEM
“Drop The World”
from the album “Rebirth”
[January 2010]

59-51-67-76-x(6)-93-62-53-58-65-64-69-79-94-x

~ 423 points // 13 weeks // #51 peak ~

Despite spending the better part of the year in jail for weapons charges, US rapper Lil Wayne (real name Dwayne Carter) has found the time to appear on nine different UK top 100 hits in 2010 as well as releasing singles from three different studio albums (Rebirth, I Am Not A Human Being and the upcoming Tha Carter IV). Drop The World (feat. Eminem (real name Marshall Mathers)) was easily the most successful of his 4 hits as the lead artist. The single was featured on his seventh studio album Rebirth, which was marketed as Wayne’s first ‘rock album’ although the predominant musical genre remained hip hop. The song started off with a fairly standard chart run for a Lil Wayne single, spending 4 weeks on the chart, but after a 6 week absence it made an unexpected resurgence and spent a further 9 weeks in the top 100 and nearly reaching a new peak in the process. Lil Wayne returned the favour for Eminem by appearing on Eminem’s #33 hit No Love which will appear later on in the countdown.

BIFFY CLYRO
“Bubbles”
from the album “Only Revolutions”
[May 2010]

93-60-40-34-40-52-61-78-78-79-79-97-99-x(2)-100-x

~ 424 points // 14 weeks // #34 peak ~

Bubbles may be seen as a surprising entry in the top 200 on this list. Biffy Clyro (Simon Neil, James Johnston, Ben Johnston) are a Scottish rock band. Of course, 2010’s singles chart has been largely lacking in rock music, so what makes Bubbles’ appearance so shocking is that the song was not the first, but the *second* post-album release (fifth overall) from their Mercury Prize nominated #3 fifth studio album Only Revolutions. Despite hundreds of thousands of people already owning the song on the album, great radio airplay helped the song reach #34 and spend 3 weeks in the top 40 and then go on to becoming the band’s longest running single in the top 100 with fourteen weeks (although this record is likely to be broken by Many Of Horror which has seen a new lease in chart life for reasons that will become clear once we get to that song’s entry in the countdown).

Love The Writer and Drop the World. :) Drop the World would've easily gone top 40 if it was released now.

JOE MCELDERRY
“The Climb”
from the album “Wide Awake”
[December 2009]

-2-15-25-38-50-68-81-x

~ 428 points // 7 weeks // #2 peak ~

The second appearance on the countdown from an X Factor graduate, this time X Factor 2009 winner Joe McElderry. The Climb, originally by Miley Cyrus, was chosen as the obligatory cover released by the X Factor winner just in time to score the Christmas #1… but Joe didn’t actually manage it. The Climb entered at #2 (still selling a very respectable 450,000 copies) behind a climb from #80 to #1 for, quite randomly, Rage Against The Machine’s Killing In The Name. The track was championed for the Christmas #1 in 2009 on Facebook by Jon and Tracy Morter and defied all odds by actually defeating Joe, selling some 500,000 copies. Similar efforts to get The Trashmen’s novelty song Surfin’ Bird (as popularised by animated show Family Guy) to the Christmas #1 2010 failed. Anyway, Joe did get his #1 as The Climb climbed (no pun intended) to #1 in its second week on the chart, before plummetting. Joe has turned out to be among the less successful X Factor winners, with second single Ambitions and album Wide Awake only charting at #6 and #3 respectively, both bombing afterwards, and third single Someone Wake Me Up only reaching a pathetic #68.

Amazing- this was very meh, sounded very similar to Hot

Everybody In Love- OK, but got old very quickly

Choices- this was a real grower, shame they kind of flopped, although I did prefer their comedy days :(

Sexy Bitch- I did like this ashamedly in 2009, but it hasn't really aged well for me

The Writer- Adore this and adore her       I got her album for Christmas and it is brilliant

Drop The World- haven't heard this one yet, doesn't sound like my sort of thing

Bubbles- really like this one :D

The Climb- typical winners fare, its not the worst they've ever did, but weak and bland nonetheless

wow, Bray this must've took ages! :o dont spend too much time on this now

ALEX GAUDINO
“I’m In Love (I Wanna Do It)”
standalone single
[October 2010]

10-19-30-38-54-62-63-96-x

~ 436 points // 8 weeks // #10 peak ~

This song was the second top 10 hit for Italian house DJ Alex Gaudino (formally Alessandro Gaudino), following up 2007 #4 hit Destination Calabria (feat. Crystal Waters). I’m In Love (I Wanna Do It) was originally just an instrumental song titled I’m In Love, but for the UK release uncredited female vocals were added to the song. This track is the only Italian representation in the top 200 on this countdown.

Anyway, because I'm really lazy, I'm actually only going to go up to #181 today.

I LOVED I'm In Love!!!! What a gorgeous tune. So gutted it only spent 4 weeks in the top 40, although i'm thrilled it got top 10.

And the female vocalist on the song is called Maxime Ashley, I think?

Famous (a.k.a. the worst single of the year by the worst band of all time) being higher than Dancing On My Own disgusts me to my core.
Didnt think climb to number 1 in its second week ?

It did, but that was the last week of last year.

WILEY AND CHEW FU
“Take That”
stand-alone single
[January 2010]

22-20-26-34-38-50-80-x

~ 437 points // 7 weeks // #20 peak ~

Take That - but not the recently fully reformed British five-piece man band - was the first single released in 2010 by British rapper Wiley (real name Richard Cowie). The track, a collaboration with DJ Chew Fu, started a very strange chart history in 2010 for Wiley. Take That itself only peaked at a relatively lowly #20, but the immediate follow-up Never Be Your Woman (Naughty Boy pts. Wiley feat. Emeli Sandé) went as high as #8 and the follow-up to that, Electric Boogaloo (feat. Jodie Connor) missed the top 100 entirely! This is the only chart hit for Chew Fu who I’ve not managed to find much info about with a quick Google.

THE XX
“Islands”
from the album “xx”
[July 2010]

96-65-60-58-62-79-77-39-34-45-67-88-x

~ 442 points // 12 weeks // #34 peak ~

British band The xx (Romy Croft, Oliver Sim, Jamie Smith), and yes that is correctly capitalised, as is their début album xx, have been building up steam for a while now. xx originally only charted at #36 in the album chart, but aided by among other things their predictable Mercury Prize 2010 win, it has since peaked as high as #3. Islands remains their only showing on the singles chart and it has a relatively low peak of #34 but like Bubbles by Biffy Clyro, it showed longevity in the chart (in this case mostly before its peak) so it’s made it into the top 200 here.

LEMAR
“The Way Love Goes”
from the album “The Hits”
[February 2010]

8-19-32-33-42-56-74-x

~ 443 points // 7 weeks // #8 peak ~

British singer Lemar (full name Lemar Obika) is another artist who has his roots in reality TV, but unlike most of the other reality TV acts in the top 200 he’s not from the X Factor - he’s actually from Fame Academy. He’s had great longevity in the chart for a reality TV artist. His first top 10 hit was Dance (With U) way back in 2003. Although The Way Love Goes, the only single taken from Lemar’s greatest hits album simply titled The Hits, plummetted in the chart after peaking, it was a great achievement for it to even make the top tier of the chart as Radio 1 saw it fit to snub poor Lemar and not playlist it.

Edited by ★ 2011 Bray ★

^ I remember Lemar's song being all over my local radio stations though. I also heard it for the first time right after I heard Replay by Iyaz for the first time, so I've always associated those two songs together, oddly enough.

MILEY CYRUS
“Can’t Be Tamed”
from the album “Can’t Be Tamed”
[June 2010]

13-16-24-25-38-61-88-97-x

~ 446 points // 8 weeks // #13 peak ~

And we come to the artist that you’ll probably think of if anyone says the word ‘Disney’ to you. US singer Miley Cyrus (also known as Hannah Montana and her birth name Destiny Cyrus) is the star of the Disney Channel TV programme Hannah Montana, and she happens to so conveniently also be a singer just like every other Disney actor. Nonetheless, Miley Cyrus seems cursed to never make the UK top ten. She’s had 3 different #11 singles - See You Again, The Climb and Party In The U.S.A. - but no top ten hits. At first it looked likely Can’t Be Tamed would join this list after a performance on Britain’s Got Talent but alas it fell from its top ten position in the midweek charts to #13. Miley has no such problem in the album chart though, as 2 of her studio albums have made the top 10 there, including this year’s Can’t Be Tamed (and 2008’s Breakout).
