Might just be me, but this time, there are so many songs which would never really be considered in a previous UP beacuse of the genre of the songs.

Dance, rap/hip-hop, Pop...

But isn't this a GOOD thing?

I'm not a fan of any of these genres, either but the more diversity the better, IMO.

As long as the Gaga's, Kesha's and Rihanna's are kept out of this, I'm fine.

I'll vote later tonight.

To be honest, I'm following this forum to discover good rock music + sub genres. I love discovering new music and diversity is a great thing - my horizons have expanded because of the diversity of the songs in UP in paticular. I just feel it would be such a shame if the high standard of UP would decrease every time from now on and slowly turn into a junior-version of BJSC.

I think UP's will maintain their relatively high standards if people keep sending songs THEY like, not songs they think OTHERS like.

I Need a Dollar by Aloe Blacc was very out of place and was one of the best songs of that edition.

in the end I see Hip-Hop as an alternative genre (as an alternative to mainstream/pop that is), and also that Immortal Technique track is incredible, people shouldnt limit their taste by genre and i'd hate to see this competition limited to indie.

As someone who also takes part in BJSC I can safely say that this content is still very far away from being anything like the general BJSC. :D

And I do think that this contest is overall worse than UP3 but I thought UP3 was better than UP1 and 2 when I listened to those songs for tony's vote. I guess it's just natural that there's a weaker contest from time to time but I don't see any downwards trend.

I think this comp is significantly better than UP3 personally, after UP3 i was worried it was going to go downhill.

and as long as the general people who enter each time continue entering, and this stays in this forum, it won't transcend into being like BJSC, theres two competitions for a reason.

As a slightly old school 'alternative' fan I say the more diversity the better. The old Indie charts were full of a huge variety of artists all with something equally worthwhile to offer. I do think this particular edition of UP is slightly too similar sounding throughout as many of the tracks seemed to blur into one for me, much more so than previous one but I don't expect that trend to continue every time. As well as that I've decided that since my tastes aren't typical of Buzzjack and even of this particular sub-forum that I am not interested in winning this but just offering up something that maybe one of two people might discover and love. Surely that is the real point of this competition?

indeed, i couldnt give an arse about where I, or anyone, comes tbh, i just want to discover good music.

if anything there does seem to be a certain UP sound leading to many similar sounding tracks, so the fact someone would branch out and enter a hip hop track is great.

I'm all for the diversity to remain too, it makes for a more interesting experience when people enter different genres.

I usually struggle to select a song as I try to find something that I don't think anyone else will have heard before which, when you consider the reasonably vast amount of alternative acts regularly discussed here, makes it quite difficult to find something completely new. I probably overthink it tbh!

Well.. I went for something different this time round not holding out any hopes though, and for the record its not Krause.

I found something better now which I wish I entered it, I just have to keep it for UP5.

I've voted, my top track really was streets ahead in the end and definitely one of my favourite discoveries so far - even if I did already know of the act.

Just sent my votes.

Kinda surprised at my 20 and 12 pointer myself actually. But both songs are amazing.

I'm all for diversity within the contest and my distaste for Immortal Technique has nothing to do with it being a hip-hop track. I do like the backing and think it has great production, It's the subject of the rap that I really don't want to listen to again.

luvvv hip-hop, but that imortal technique song stinks. my opinion tho. i dunno. i guess that certain aesthetic in rap (immortal technique, aesop rock) sort of turns me off. tho i do like some aesop rock songs occasionally. it also just feels like a poor man's 'da art of storytellin' (part 1)'.

i think diversity is good. like someone else said, if UP stays in this forum and the people who enter it keep doing it i think quality/diversity will always remain high. it may fluctuate between contests, but we'll never be like BJSC. and thank god for that.

Hope to vote soon.

While listening I noticed the stark contrast between I Want A Pony and the Sissel song which follows it when I play the list on my mp3 player. :D

She may be the most unlikely of all the acts to have done so but Sissel actually has appeared on a top 20 hit.

Not that I want this to turn into another 'should it be eligible' conversation as she's clearly not really very well known.

Well the original song in question is crap, and she's only a 'featured as' artist on it (in fact, I wouldn't be suprised in her original track was sampled and contractual issues meant that she had to be credited).
