Airplay chart number ones of 2010:

Cheryl Cole - Parachute (2 weeks)

Alexandra Burke feat. Pitbull - All Night Long (1 week)

Cheryl really did well with "Fight For This Love" considering the massive airplay it had in 2009. What a monster hit. Didn't know "Parachute" was 2 weeks at number 1 and Alexandra hit number 1 :)

Katy Perry for the 2010 summer anthem. Really amazing.

All of the top 3 sounded great on the radio :D

Based on cumulative totals from weekly Top 100 Airplay charts, here's the 75 biggest Airplay hits of 2010.

BTW, I've set up my spreadsheet to calculate radio plays/ratings for 2011, so perhaps we could cross-check sometimes?

Well, Alejandro and Empire State of Mind II sounded good on the radio the first few times, because you know the tracks from before-hand, but they're only album tracks, and then you want them to be picked as singles, and then you finally hear them on the radio, and it just feels so good. It's like "Wow, I can't believe these songs are now being broadcast to millions of people". You know everybody's going to be loving the songs in a month or two. But it gets very tiring the 600th time you hear them. :(

Most of the positions seem to make or kinda make sense to me. The few that I seriously don't understand is #14 and probably #35. I guess I didn't pay much attention to the performance of those tracks in the weekly airplay charts.

Based on what I hear on the radio (which isn't representative of the whole country), You've Got the Love seems about right at #14, and I would've expected All Night Long to be higher. There was about a month where All Night Long was literally everywhere on commercial radio!! It was insane! :o

The top 3 on the artist airplay chart would probably be the top 3 on the Buzzjack airplay chart too.

It's funny to see Pitbull at #12! I guess he just features on so many singles!!

It was nearly an all female Top 5, but Alexandra Burke got knocked down a couple of places this week.

And it's all american. UK radios should play more UK artists. It seems to me they play more and more americans each year.

Yep. Only 21 out of 50 are UK artists. Shame that one country doesn't give the right promotion or appreciation to her own music, and just find more interesting to play songs from US (just because they are bigger names). Music produced by UK artists is like 1000 times better than most garbage from US.

I really hope 2011 will be better but I am not holding out much hope.Sadly commercial radio must take alot of the blame for this.As pleased as I am that they support acts I like like Alexandra, Nicky Minaj and Shontelle that R1 does not.Not sure why commercial radio do not support the likes of Diana Vickers, Marina and Nadine.European radio and American radio especially do not touch UK acts much these days yet UK radio will whore out anything as long as it is American.

21 out of 50 is just a disgrace, rather shocked that again X-factor acts are doing so well yet people complain that Simon Cowell is killing homegrown music.

Indeed sad! I love Marina & the Diamonds and you barely listen any of her songs! Not even in the list! It's all in the media. Everyone will listen a song produced by Rihanna, Eminem, Lady GaGa, Britney etc., even if it's not good and that is happening worldwide. I think those acts got the money to support the material or garbage they produced, but when it comes to UK acts they are way to small (in money) for a worldwide promotion (give money for radio/tv support, new videos...).

And don't forget the trend: anything foreign is better from our own product!

Yeah, most of the UK artists doing well are down to the X Factor. :o I wonder what it'd be like without the X Factor! Although I'd guess with no X Factor, some other medium would come to "replace it", so to speak, as there'd be that gap in the market, sort of.

It must be so difficult to get mainstream as a UK artist. What the likes of Tinie Tempah, Diana Vickers, even Eliza Doolittle have done last year, is pretty incredible tbh. I remember before Once was released, I used to listen to the radio, and she'd be doing an interview, then an hour later, I'd be listening to another station, and she'd be on there too, doing another interview! She worked so hard at the time!

I can clearly see why the last few years have seen a complete domination of the UK charts by American acts.I did not know that radio was so biased towards the yanks.I wonder if the video airplay year end chart would show the same thing. It is rather sad and

shows why acts like Diana, Alesha,Marina, Eliza, Joe, most Indie acts and even Ellie to a certain extent have one huge debut single and the follow up singles barely scrap the Top 20.

Of course and video airplay charts will be the same! In the last few years the number of international superstars have increased so musc (Lady GaGa, Katy Perry, Rihanna etc.) so in a single year is more possible some of them to release something! And when such huge names release anything, media will give them their deserved (?) attention.

Yeah. Also, what I find with most commercial radio stations is that their playlist is basically the charts. So they will play British songs if they get really high in the charts, but they very rarely play them before, unless they're established artists. Pass Out is the classic example. Very, very rarely played outside of Radio 1 before it was released, but after it got to #1, commercial radio stations suddenly started playlisting it.

But obviously, this makes it very difficult, as you struggle to get into the charts in the first place without radio airplay, and without radio airplay, it's very difficult to get into the charts. It's quite a circular tbh.

And, in the other sense, if the charts were 90% British songs, then the playlists of those commercial radio stations would be 90% British songs. Those particular radio stations don't have anything against the country the song comes from, the genre of the song, etc. But again, we can't get 90% British songs in the charts without general radio support (note, I definitely don't want 90% British songs in the chart, I'm just exaggerating a bit ). It's like another circle. Once you're in the circle, it's fine, so long as you continue giving out good songs, but if you're not "in the circle", it's very difficult to get in there.

Another possible route to success is if you feature on popular songs done by another artist. Bruno Mars did this well on a worldwide scale this year, by appearing on two massive hip hop songs (Nothin' On You and Billionaire), and was already hugely famous before he released his debut single. Labrinth has done this on a UK scale. Again, he featured on two massively popular hip hop songs (Pass Out and Frisky), so by the time he released his first single, he was already quite well-known, and I know a few radio stations that played the song well before its release.
