January 21, 201114 yr i take xiu xiu seriously though i agree there is a certain element of humor/ludicrousness to their music, but it's purposeful and the emotion is very very real. see their live show. it's astounding. the spoken word verse from support our troops OH! is just...words can't describe; i love how out of context it seems childish but within the context of the album it's clearly storytelling / jamie portraying a character. somehow with fabulous muscles he manages to perfectly describe the depression that comes with not having the privilege being heteronormative/cisgender/'normal' (which sounds dumb but whatever), but it's also very humorous and positive in the end, i think. PERFECT ALBUM, etc. Maybe. But honestly, i can't get past how they're so laden with irony, i have no problem with dark humour and bittersweet-ness (their covers of Under Pressure and Don't Cha <3) but it takes the ludicrosity so far i really struggle to take them seriously, although i do understand how there is some sort of positivity there. But Fabulous Muscles has transgender themes? Oof, i must listen again.
January 22, 201114 yr I think some people are mixing up dramatic with epic. I came into this thread to post dramatic pop songs but I see that people are suggesting other genres too so I would put this forward as quite dramatic. o4j9fJewoxk It is also epic but it has drama to. January 22, 201114 yr well, proper dramatic songs should have an effect on the audience- a full on anthem, the obvious choices would be Queen- Bohemian Rhapsody and We Are The Champions are both very dramatic songs Muse make very dramatic pieces, Welcome To The Black Parade from MCR are also dramatic from what I recall This. Muse are the kings of the dramatic, listening to Origin of Symmetry now that the best word to descibe it would be 'unhinged'... Also, it's not strictly a pop song but this is incredibly dramatic: gOMhN-hfMtY
January 22, 201114 yr I agree with Stan but its effect has worn off. Muse have many a dramatic. Butter Flies and Hurricanes I think works best.
January 23, 201114 yr Maybe. But Fabulous Muscles has transgender themes? Oof, i must listen again. Fabulous Muscles maybe not directly, though there are definite themes of intersexuality ("of your deformed penis"). But on other albums, namely 'Sad Pony Guerilla Girl' from A Promise ("you say I am loca because I am your girl / you say I am stupid because I am your girl / you leave me out on the steps you dress me up like a boy") I think genderqueer-ness plays a huge role.
January 24, 201114 yr I don't really understand what you mean by dramatic.. I could listen to Paranoid by Black Sabbath and say that it's dramatic, but most people wouldn't agree: Finished with my woman 'cause she couldn't help me with my mind People think I'm insane because I am frowning all the time All day long I think of things but nothing seems to satisfy Think I'll lose my mind if I don't find something to pacify Can you help me occupy my brain? Oh yeah I need someone to show me the things in life that I can't find I can't see the things that make true happiness, I must be blind Make a joke and I will sigh and you will laugh and I will cry Happiness I cannot feel and love to me is so unreal And so as you hear these words telling you now of my state I tell you to enjoy life I wish I could but it's too late .. or heck, even Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt'.
