Russell [The Fighter] - 33/1
January 27, 201114 yr The Nolan loons seem to be complaining about the Coen Brothers nomination, True Grit definitely deserved it. David O. Russell has always seemed like a strange choice to me. I really enjoyed The Fighter but it was more of an actors film (very similar to Doubt in that respect, Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Viola Davis all nominated - nothing for direction). Personally, I would have gone for Danny Boyle (or even Debra Granik) over Christopher Nolan. Not me, the Coens are great film-makers... Tbh, I'd sooner see David Fincher's name removed, because The Social Network is nothing like the best he's capable of.... I think David O Russell didn't really "direct", so much as kind of let the actors have free-reign, sometimes that works though...
January 30, 201114 yr Author I'm not sure how much effect this has, but Tom Hooper has just been award the DGA for Best Feature Film for 'The King's Speech'. The Oscar race continues to be a tight one, with Tom Hooper being awarded the Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for The King's Speech at the 63rd annual Director Guild of America Awards, a prize considered to be an excellent prognosticator for who will win the Best Director Academy award.
January 30, 201114 yr I'm not sure how much effect this has, but Tom Hooper has just been award the DGA for Best Feature Film for 'The King's Speech'. It's going to be extremely close now, especially after winning the DGA. To be honest I'd rather Tom Hooper won, David Fincher is an incredible filmmaker but The Social Network doesn't deserve THIS MUCH recognition. I enjoyed it, but he has done better. And it would seem that Oscars Co-host James Franco agrees with us, albeit in a bit of ranty sort of way, he does make a good point about the film being supposedly this "generational" thing, but in reality it's a very conventional, typical Hollywood product... I have to say in that respect, I agree with him, it's absolutely nothing new and there is the whiff of "Emperor's New Clothes" about the film.... Fincher has done way better than this ("Seven", "Fight Club", "Zodiac" and "Benjamin Button"), it would be a bit insulting to him in a lot of ways if he got the Oscar for one of his least challenging or innovative film, you'd may as well as say "Alien 3" was awards-worthy, because frankly, The Social Network is really just as conventional as a franchise movie... http://www.movieline.com/2011/01/video-new...e-127-hours.php Also, interestingly, Hans Zimmer has weighed-in with his opinion on what he feels is a snub to Chris Nolan.... http://www.google.com/hostednews/ukpress/a...51296030361221A
January 31, 201114 yr I saw Michelle William's performance in Blue Valentine at the weekend. Very suprised she was recognised for her role in this. It's a very hit and miss performance.
February 27, 201114 yr Predictions for tonight? I don't think one film is going to swoop in and win everything. If The Social Network wins best film then I think Tom Hooper will win for direction, but we shall see. I cannot make my mind up about Melissa Leo either, her votes are going to be split with Amy Adams and she shouldn't have paid for her own Oscar campaign. I can see Hailee Steinfeld being the surprise of the night actually. Sorry Helena (and poor Annette Bening, three nominations and all three so close). Best Motion Picture of the Year The King's Speech Best Achievement in Directing David Fincher, The Social Network Best Performance by an Actor in Leading Role Colin Firth, The King's Speech Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role Natalie Portman, Black Swan Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role Christian Bale, The Fighter Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Melissa Leo, The Fighter or Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit Best Original Screenplay Christopher Nolan, Inception Best Adapted Screenplay Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network Best Animated Feature Film Toy Story 3 Edited February 27, 201114 yr by ▲▲▲

February 27, 201114 yr I do like all the films nominated for best picture but if I'd have to choose - I'd go for Toy Story 3.

Although it's a two horse race between The King's Speech and The Social Network to win Best Film, however we will find out who has won that after they hand out the Oscar for editing. The night is really going to belong to those two films. You're spot on regarding Hailee though, if there's an upset it will be there, and while she gives the best performance out of everyone in her catergory, I don't like how they bascially cheated to try and get her a win. I'm very much in Weaver's corner for that award, it's a towering performance but sadly Animal Kingdom has gone largely unnoticed besides her performance, not to mention it's an Australian film so makes it even less likely even though she's apparantly hit the circuit. Also, Benning on the other hand keeps out of the circuit, so it's no surprise she won't win it this year, although she is very much back in the game now, and has a few Oscar-baiting films out in the near future, so expect her to finally win the darn thing in 2012. Bale is also coming into doubt now as well as Leo, as Oscar commentators have been switching their predictions recently in favour of a Rush win. My predictions: Best Motion Picture of the Year The King's Speech or The Social Network (genuinely can't tell) Best Achievement in Directing David Fincher, The Social Network Best Performance by an Actor in Leading Role Colin Firth, The King's Speech Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role Natalie Portman, Black Swan Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role Geoffrey Rush, The King's Speech Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit Best Original Screenplay The King's Speech: David Seidler Best Adapted Screenplay Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network Best Animated Feature Film Toy Story 3 What I want: Best Motion Picture of the Year The Social Network Best Achievement in Directing David Fincher, The Social Network Best Performance by an Actor in Leading Role James Franco, 127 Hours Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role Nicole Kidman, Rabbit Hole Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role Christian Bale, The Fighter Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Jacki Weaver, Animal Kingdom Best Original Screenplay Inception: Christopher Nolan Best Adapted Screenplay Aaron Sorkin, The Social Network Best Animated Feature Film Toy Story 3 Edited February 27, 201114 yr by Daniel II
