Posted February 8, 201114 yr Hi, I was thinking of setting up a multi-choice poll, where you could vote for which genre(s) you like / listen to. The main issue I have, is precisely which genres to list, and how to sub-divide them. Admittedly, up to 50 categories can be listed, but I think can can agree that using that many would make the poll absurdly unweildy. :) To start off the list : Rap/Hip-Hop, R&B, Reggae, Soul, Country, Jazz, Blues, Easy-Listening, Pop, Dance, Trance, Rock (please suggest sub-divisions), Latino, Punk, Classical No doubt I've missed out one ot two biggies, but hopefully not too many. :) Please suggest additions and/or sub-divisions as you see fit. Hopefully we'll be able to come to some sort of concensus over which to include. ;) Edited February 8, 201114 yr by vidcapper
February 8, 201114 yr Dubstep is becoming a genre of its own, although it could be listed under dance
February 8, 201114 yr 'Dance' is far too broad a genre to be listed on its own. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_music_genres That list should give ideas on other genres you could split it up into (although some of them are too similar to tell the difference between)
February 8, 201114 yr Dubstep could be categorized under electronica and/or dance. Also, do NOT combine RnB and hip hop. :( They're not the same at all. Just they both originated in black communities in the US. That's about as similar as they get. I would just do the chart-relevant genres at the moment, which are pop, RnB, dance, hip hop, and maybe electronic. We all know how it'll turn out anyway. Pop - 85%, hip hop 3%.

February 8, 201114 yr Rap and Hip hop are a bit different too. All hip hop is rap, but not all rap is hip hop. Big Boi for example does rap but not usually hip hop. Kanye West definitely is not hip hop. Edited February 8, 201114 yr by SKOB

February 8, 201114 yr I always understood it that rap isn't a genre, just a style of singing that is mostly present in the genre of hip hop? Yea that is probably correct. Pitbull mainly raps but his hits are more dance-pop. So hip hop is fine here. Although, people who like Pitbull might like rap but not hip hop. Same with Flo Rida. February 8, 201114 yr Author 'Dance' is far too broad a genre to be listed on its own. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_electronic_music_genres That list should give ideas on other genres you could split it up into (although some of them are too similar to tell the difference between) That's the list I first consulted. Dubstep could be categorized under electronica and/or dance. Also, do NOT combine RnB and hip hop. :( They're not the same at all. Just they both originated in black communities in the US. That's about as similar as they get. I never intended to combine them. ************************ I do want to avoid too much subdivision though - for example, in dance there are tons of sub-genres, yet the the distinctions are usually insignificant, almost to the point of irrelevance. Personally I can't tell the difference between, say, house & garage - to me they are both just buildings. :P
February 8, 201114 yr Author Rap and Hip hop are a bit different too. All hip hop is rap, but not all rap is hip hop. Big Boi for example does rap but not usually hip hop. Kanye West definitely is not hip hop. But what is the distinction between them, then?
February 8, 201114 yr Personally I can't tell the difference between, say, house & garage - to me they are both just buildings. :P Really? I'd say there's an incredibly obvious difference between k_U6mWu1XQA and _Fr7DVrtGms
February 8, 201114 yr But what is the distinction between them, then? Hip hop makes explicit use of danceable beats. Rap isn't a genre, more a style of singing - although Kanye's recent album pretty much defies genre pigeon-holing anyway.

February 8, 201114 yr Folk could be combined with Country You could change the Trance to Electronic Dance with subdivisions of: Trance, Techno, Hardcore, Rave, Progressive House, Ambient Edited February 8, 201114 yr by euro music
February 8, 201114 yr Alternative could be put as another genre A sub-division of Rock is soft rock If you want an in-depth list of music genres, try this link (although I wouldn't suggest you use them all, you'll see what I mean!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_popular_music_genres
February 8, 201114 yr Author Welcome to the club, vidcapper. Vile music! Unfortunately I've said that so often here now that I've severely pissed off its fans - so now I try to ration such comments. :P Edited February 8, 201114 yr by vidcapper
February 8, 201114 yr NEVER Indeed. They're incredibly far apart, might as well combine metal and soft rock!
