Before I start my point, this is not a thread negative towards any artist as everyone is individual in their own right (even Gaga who I'd disagree with such a statement :kink: )

So looking at the stats for "Born This Way" straight to iTunes #1, a feat that Britney didn't even manage with "Hold It Against Me" in the UK. How come? They both had similar hypes? Britney has been around A LOT longer than Gaga, so has more of an established fan base, and I don't think the song even cracked the top 5 on iTunes. It's competition was Diddy, which is NOTHING to phone home about. So this leads me to ask why?

Is the UK's perception of her that bad? Do people still hold the X Factor performance against her? I really don't get it. Why is she so unsuccessful here?

And please don't respond that she's "$h!t" or "rubbish", as they justify nothing considering her conquests everywhere else.

The simple answer was that 'Born This Way' was available the second it premiered; 'Hold It Against Me' was held back 6 days...I think if 'HIAM' was simultaneously released with the US, it'd've gone higher here... Otherwise, they should've just left the release until February as originally planned...

I guess the UK's love affaire with Britney has officially ended? In my humble opinion, Hold It Against Me is the best pop song out there at the moment, yes, even better than Born This Way which I consider quite generic to be frank. And Britney is such a mainstream artist, I seriously can't find another reason than the UK not caring about Britney anymore, since everywhere else in the world HIAM has made No.1 on i-Tunes.

I think it's become apparent that GaGa is the only artist out there who can do what she did with "Born This Way". I'm pretty sure if Rihanna had been hyped to the hilt with "Only Girl" and used the same strategy as Britney, she wouldn't have done a great deal better (although it would have probably held up better).

I also think Britney fans particularly in the UK overhype her acheivements. She scored a gargantuan #1, a pop classic, 11 years ago. Two years later Kylie did something similar and, although admittedly she has a different span of fans to Britney, no one was especially surprised when "All The Lovers" missed #1 last year. Britney is a successful pop singer but as someone who writes little (if any?) of her own material, she's incredibly reliant on the quality of the material given to her. For example:

Toxic - pop classic - UK #1

Womanizer - average, but overhyped - top 5

Hold It Against Me - better, but shoddy release strategy - #6

I don't think the time delay is anything to do with it to be honest. 6 days is barely anything let's face it, and I guarantee than GaGa will be higher than #17 or whatever in the UK charts 3 weeks on from her release date.

The simple fact is that GaGa has completely DOMINATED the last couple of years, whilst Britney hasn't been the UK's favourite popstar since 2004 - GaGa, Rihanna, Beyonce and P!nk have all surpassed her in public affection and esteem. Britney top 10, GaGa #1 was the inevitable outcome regardless of release date. #6 wasn't a BAD result for Britney, she still obviously has her fans, but to expect her to be competing with GaGa was quite unrealistic.

I don't understand it really Britney is bigger than ever in the UK (Fame Wise) However I don't think her breakdown and that x factor performance helped really. (Her on front of a paper sitting on a curb and shaving her hair I will never forget.)
well she hasn't done much promotion since her glory days so that can't help. people will feel disconnected from her whereas someone like gaga is always over here promoting and people feel like they know her more.
I'm British and I love her. I think it's because there are limitted award shows in the Uk so she can't show off her amazing performances

You see I feel it's a disconnection thing. Artists like Beyonce, Gaga and Rihanna are always around promoting in some way shape or form.
It's only problem lack of promotion from Britney's side. They will do a lot more promo in this era, so we can expect unexpected ;)
I wouldn't say she's done badly with this, I guess the real test will be when the video's out etc. and see how it climbs. I'm doubtful it'll surprass the #6 peak but even so that's hardly bad.

They are different promo plans so you can't really compare.

And GaGa is where Britney was with 'Oops' was 10+ years ago.

And BTW is GaGa's worst single. But it will do massively well because she is Lady GaGa.

Lol. Everywhere I look on these boards your posting the same message.

I posted it here and in the Lady Gaga forum. lmfao.

The only 2 places worth visiting right now. :P

I don't know. Certainly as far as the UK goes, I think GaGa is actually BIGGER than Britney EVER was (even with the Oops era...) - certainly I don't recall Britney ever coming CLOSE to the album sales that GaGa achieved with The Fame/Monster - Britney was very much a phenomenon for the teeny-boppers at the time, whereas GaGa is EVERYWHERE.

Obviously I know with the US and other territories, it's a different story...

God I sound like a GaGa loon, which is actually far from the truth...

I think I would have to agree with the UK scenario. But BOMT did sell 1.2 million and the single sold 1.5 million. With BTMYH hitting #1 as well. And Sometimes (#3- 440,000) and Crazy (#5 270,000+).

I think I would have to say Britney was just as huge in the UK for BOMT and Oops era. Or atleast very close.

Certainly the sales are impressive, but bar BOTM the single, they're blown out of the water by GaGa. And 99/00 was the BOOM time for the singles market in the UK...

The Fame/Monster has sold pretty much double BOTM, even during the album market slump. And she's had 5 singles in 2 years which have all sold more then 500k, I think Britney only had 1 in her entire career...

You can't really compare sales from now to those from a decade ago. The market is completely different now, in both size and formats...

I do agree with Tyler that Britney was probably as big in in her prime GaGa is now. It's hard to say as I'm obviously an adult now, when Britney first came around I was 9 years old I think! She definitely seemed to be all over the place though, lol.

It's different, but both the singles and album markets were STRONGER during Britney's debut, so if anything that skews the argument even FURTHER in GaGa's favour...
