No, but I can see next year being horrendous if they do well with everybody rushing to send novelty entries. I can just imagine the UK selection now;

John Barrowman: 'Jedward came 2nd last year, so lets see if we can go one better this year with our own fun and colourful entry. Competing for the ticket to Eurovision are...Wagner, Chico and The Cheeky Girls :cheer:'

It's hard to tell how the juries will hinder them though, will they all flock to avoid it, or will they surprisingly support it like the Irish jury did in the national final!?! Whatever happens, I'll be shocked if it doesn't give them their second UK top 40 hit next week.

Don't get too worried. Europe takes Eurovision far more seriously than we do, so they will prevent Jedward from EVER winning. Good odds or not. They'll probably get one of the big 3 points from the UK, although I dunno how the UK judge will vote. Maybe it'll prevent them from getting one of the top 3 points?
I think Lipstick is a GREAT little pop song. It's just the two mentally challoenged twats "singing" it (well, jumping around while someone else does the singing) that ruin it for me. I really DO think they'll qualify tonight, but I don't see them coming higher than 15 in the final.
I think Lipstick is shockingly bad, aside from Jedward 'singing' it, it's just a really weak pop song. I remain steadfast that they will flop in the final, but the UK will probably give them 10 or 12 unforunately, with the other probably going to GREECE. Ugh.
France have UK's 12 points sewn up I reckon. The UK love a bit of Opera and seeing the demographic target audience for Eurovision, I can easily see the OAP's reaching for their phones and redialling.

It's a bit unfair to call it a novelty act just because it's Jedward singing it. If it was someone else singing it you wouldn't be calling it a novelty entry....

In that case it's no more a novelty entry than Popular is. I'm not a big fan of Jedward but I don't think you could fairly compare Lipstick to Irelande Douze Points or Flying the flag for you.

I doubt the UK will give Ireland 10 or 12 points. I'm sure the jury will be horribly biased against Jedward and we'll end up with about 4-5 points from the UK.

But Jedward ARE a novelty act as far as I'm concerned, that's how they've been marketed in the UK anyway. Mambo No.5 isn't a novelty song, but it became one when Bob The Builder sang it.

Ok, it's not as novelty as the songs that you mentioned, but I still think it's borderline (maybe on par with Daz Sampson? Not quite novelty but halfway there) and if it did well, it could really bring novelty entries back to the contest in a big way next year and that's not a desirable effect as far as I'm concerned.

I still think if you're looking for a novelty entry, look over at Portugal this year and not Ireland. That's what a novelty entry looks like.

It's not like every country copies what does well the previous year anyway.

The only song/performance this year that seems copied from a previous good result is Finland. I'm not seeing any Satellite inspired jazz numbers this year.

I understand where Rich is coming from to a certain extent. But I would disagree that a Jedward success story would open the gates to a novelty-ridden 2012 contest. Novelty acts do relatively well most years, and we've never had a "Noveltyvision". :heehee:

I wouldn't worry about Ireland's odds. As much as I like Jedward, and even though their rehearsals have been quite good, I really can't see them threatening the Top 10.

Both are novelty to some extent imo, Portugal moreso admittedly. Everybody called Daz Sampson novelty in 2006 and Jedward are at least on par with him in those stakes, so I shall remain calling them a novelty act! We'll just have to agree to disagree here. And there's no shame in liking or supporting a novelty entry - Scooch and Daz were both #1's on my personal chart  But the former was just me being overly patriotic I think but I did genuinely love Teenage Life. But I do as a general rule prefer the contest without too many novelty entries.

Maybe not directly obvious copies but some entries have certainly been inspired by past successes. Finland as you say, and as for Lena, well imo she's influenced Estonia and Switzerland (quirky girls) even if the songs don't sound anything like Satellite. Not to mention the fact that she's returned herself! The juries coming back sort of signalled the death of novelty songs I think, so if one were to suddenly do well again, I have no doubt that they'd all come flooding back next year.

Ireland won't win... The only reason, as people have already mentioned, that they are so high in the odds is because so many deluded Brits have been putting a bet on them. Definitely no chance of winning.

'Jedward' and 'winning' don't really fit together.

In general, joke or novelty acts don't win so only a fool would count on that. There are always people who don't buy the joke or find the novelty act relevant. Lordi was an exception in some extent but they also had a brilliant song.

Even Verka S. couldn't win in 2007 although the performance was the most memorable that night.

I do think that's a little long for the UK at 10/1...Hungary have really dropped down since getting drawn in 5th as well. Bearing in mind that Ireland probably/hopefully won't do that well (although a part of me feels that this is the exposure they needed to become huge European personalities as well as UK/Ireland :o), France are looking at a landslide here. But then the crowd seemed to favour the UK more...Saturday will be interesting, but I'm still seeing a France win with the UK 2nd/3rd. I'd like to see Austria do better than mid-table, but at least she's qualified :D

Can anyone transform ranks into odds? I don't know how to do it :P

This is the results from 'The Eurovision Review'

There's no way to really - one is opinion and the other one is chance. Because of the way it's been done out of 10, the closest you could get to doing it would be having Hungary at 94%, which would be odds of 47/50 of victory - and logically impossible the second you added Blue into that equation, as you'd be saying there are two acts who will win 47 times out of 50
