It seems rather conclusive :heehee:

I've not read through this thread but I can only assume someone has already mentioned 'Telephone' would is easily the biggest example of how a music video can boost the sales of the song.

'Hold It Against Me' has premiered but the video is nowhere near as spectacular as I was expecting considering all the hype. It'll probably boost sales for the song but I think it's safe to say 'HIAM' is not going anywhere near #1 now in the UK.

However, there is still the video premiere of 'Born This Way' this weekend/next week so if it's a spectacular work of art (like 'Telephone') rather than a limp wristed drama smilie (like 'Alejandro' was!!! ) then 'BTW' could easily benefit and get a big boost in sales.

I just realised that someone has "null voted" in the poll.

Yes, in terms of exposure.

In that sense it's often just a form of airplay, though. It's only if the video is renowned/talked about that it makes a difference for itself: Examples: a-ha, Britney, some Rihanna...Electric Six! In such cases I would say the video would attract people to the song, rather than just being a means of airplay, if that makes sense.

as has been said before it's not whether they help a song, it's how much of an effect it has in helping a song. For example, with this week, I personally don't think adele wouldn't benefit with a new video as much as lady gaga because there is more potential to create a spectacular video with born this way than there is with someone like you
we will be able to tell this week or next because britney's video has finnally been released

It didn't even take that long - up 20 places in a day on iTunes is pretty good evidence!

Translation - videos only help promote singles, as long as you are not as plain-looking as... well Adele... ;)

Before someone jumps down my throat, that wasn't intended as a slight against Adele, but more a pragmatic assessment of what videos are for. After all, Amy Winehouse's sales haven't been affected by her (lack of) looks, nor have SuBo's.

If you can sing well, then that can override physical factors.

Susan Boyle's success was largely because of her lack of looks and the contrast that made with her voice which generated media hype.

They help, but not as much as they did even two years ago.

There's an obvious bias towards certain kind of acts, though. For example, Chris Brown is currently sitting at #2 on the TV airplay chart, yet Adele is all the way down at #19 and I believe that is her peak so far (or at least I certainly know it hasn't got much higher than that, as I check the chart every week). Why is Chris Brown getting so much more play over an act that is far more successful than him at the moment, chart-wise? It's a bias of genre, simple as that.

But you're right, somewhat, but it depends on the music channel. The Box has always been biased towards pop, dance, R&B and didn't give alternative stuff THAT much attention even when it was somewhat successful between 2004-2006. Acts like Arctic Monkeys never got as much rotation there as the likes of Pussycat Dolls, Black Eyed Peas etc. despite being just as successful chart-wise. But there were other channels back then like B4 (which doesn't exist anymore, I believe) and they were much more varied with the music they played. Chart Show TV never used to be so bad for that, either, not sure what it's like now as I never watch music channels anymore, but it used to be my favourite around 2003.

They'll play an "indie" song if it gets to #1, yes, but they wouldn't play it anywhere near as much as they would an R&B or pop #1 single, basically.

exactly my point theres a bias to richer stars and stars with good looks that will fit in the mtv era!!

Surely the most pointless and meaningless poll ever. This should get a nomination at the next Buzzjack awards :)

Edited by Gaga for Glee!

If the song has a video, it can be played on music channels....therefore more people see and hear it, therefore more people buy it...therefore it helps....
They definately do but they shouldn't. It should be down to the music (or in some cases lack of)
lady gaga being at 3 this week is the obvious example....after the video next week it will hit no1!!
