I'm gutted that Connolly didn't get elected in GW. :( Oh well, at least Labour did very well. And I just realized that if Labour and FG form a coalition then they'd have a total of 113 out of 166! :o If a coalition is formed, then I hope Labour can guarantee a number of things: no university fees*, and a referendum on marriage equality**.

It wouldn't surprise me at all if FG and Labour or any other opposition party weren't told about certain things in relation to the economy. This is Fianna Fail we're talking about... the same party who completely denied that Ireland would need a bailout.

*This is a huge issue here. Labour abolished tuition fees when it was in government in the 90s(?). Bringing them back in would throw us back thirty years. Most won't be able to afford to study at third-level and will emigrate. This can't happen again!

**This may not be an "important" issue for a lot of people, but Ireland needs to redeem itself and I think this is one way of doing it. I mentioned this in one of my earlier posts in this thread, and most people here support marriage equality, so it'll be interesting to see if Enda will follow up on his promise of "giving the people what they want".

Out of interest, what does Ireland have to redeem itself from?

So we've got a Fine Gael/Labour coalition then. Thankfully these two parties are more ideologically similar to each other than Lib/Torries, so hopefully they will work well together.

I think legalizing same-sex marriage would be a step towards rebuilding the reputation of the country. ^_^

The programe for government is quite good, I have to say. Lets hope they stick to it! :o

Poor Biffo he needs to go to Jamaica or somewhere and lay low for a while

Sadly, it seems Irish Labour haven't learnt anything from the UK Lib Dems. :(

But had the Lib Dems ever been in government before? From what I saw in the UK election, the Lib Dems jumped into bed with the Tories without any significant concessions. The new programme for government is basically 50% Fine Gael policy and 50% Labour policy (thankfully!).

The difference is that Fine Gael outnumber Labour by 2-1 whereas, in Westminster, the Tories outnumber the Lib Dems by over 5-1. Of course, that is down to the fact that the Irish result is a much fairer reflection of the votes than the UK result. After all, the Tories only beat the Lib Dems by just over 3-2 in terms of votes.
