Posted March 11, 201114 yr The performances or the actual results? What do you think? :o 90% (quite literally) of watching-ESC-Russia tune in only when we are on (and 98% never even turn the telly on when it's another semi) and then go to sleep whereas other 8-9% get to the end and watch the rest of the show, falling asleep after the last performance, and the rest, me included, never even blinks during the whole thing not to miss any second. :kink: ... nevermind good half who don't acknowledge semi-finals at all!
March 11, 201114 yr I think in the UK, the viewing figures seem to peak during the results. Maybe there are a couple of million people who don't care as much about the songs, but are slightly interested in where we finish? Or maybe it's due to it starting at 8pm UK time - in America, more people seem to be watching TV at about 9pm, not sure about the UK I know it's hard with the different timezones, but it can't be great for countries where it doesn't start until 11pm local time :( Edited March 11, 201114 yr by Jack Sykes
March 11, 201114 yr The ratings always peak in the UK in the final 10 minutes, so the voting I guess...that way casual viewers get to see the most interesting/tense parts and watch the reprisal of the winner, and then moan that they think it's crap probably
March 11, 201114 yr Author 2009 was PRETTY TENSE INDEED  People here absolutely HATED Lena last year. Don't know WHY AT ALL! They watch Eurovision final without hearing any songs beforehand and claim to know EVERYTHING about ESC. The usual "<put any person's favourite of the night> didn't win because <put the winner of said contest> bought their/his/her victory" is said every single year. And not by one person. A bunch of stupid blind sheep.
March 11, 201114 yr Pavel, your making it sound like other Russians aren't really interested in ESC, or don't like it etc. So now I'm wondering what it is that's keeping your broadcaster from withdrawing?
March 11, 201114 yr Author Pavel, your making it sound like other Russians aren't really interested in ESC, or don't like it etc. So now I'm wondering what it is that's keeping your broadcaster from withdrawing? Many people here watch ESC, it's just everybody keeps dissing it left and right, really off-putting for actual loons fans. Plus, what's a better way to boast the fact that even with the worst song of the decade we still manage to finish 11th in the final :kink:
March 11, 201114 yr In the UK it's generally perceived as a guilty pleasure. Most people take the p*ss out of it (apart from the loons) and claim to watch it 'for a laugh' but the majority of my friends wouldn't dream of missing it! I mean if they really want 'a laugh', watch a comedy, they're just embarrassed to admit liking it because it's got a stigma of being cheesy camp crap here. Our entries over the past decade haven't helped this cause at all...
March 21, 201114 yr The UK love to hate ESC - THe show gets between 35% - 50% of the viewing audience every year! [Apart from last year when it attracted 23% :P ] 2010: 5.54m  - Poor old Josh was written off from the start! 2009: 7.8m 2008: 7.1m 2007: 8.77m 2006: 8.33m 2005: 7.97m 2004: 8.38m 2003: 7.94m 2002: 7.81m 2001: 6.98m 2000: 6.54m 1999: 8.91m
March 21, 201114 yr If I remember right, the major issue with the ratings last year was not Josh (though there was a distinct lack of awareness about the contest last year) but that it clashed with the Britain's Got Talent final...
March 21, 201114 yr If I remember right, the major issue with the ratings last year was not Josh (though there was a distinct lack of awareness about the contest last year) but that it clashed with the Britain's Got Talent final... Yes it did - Although im pleased that happened as i think it might have shocked the BBC into some sort of action for this year as they lost their Saturday night leadership to BGT which got 9m viewers, Clearly the way to get the BBC to give us a decent entry is to not watch the contast the year before
March 21, 201114 yr It clashed with BGT the year before too, but had decent enough ratings. Hopefully the combined news of Dana (I guess), Blue and (maybe but hopefully not) Jedward all being in the final will boost interest and ratings. Be prepared for them to clash again though, I haven't heard any news of BGT being any later this year...
March 21, 201114 yr I don't think it was the BGT final in 2009 (thankfully, given all the SuBo hype), I remember watching both ESC & BGT in full, live. BGT will probably keep its slot every year, but ESC can vary - last year it was later, this year it's earlier. A clash with an auditions show isn't too bad.

I thought the ESC final only clashed with maybe a BGT semi last year  I'm certain that I watched the BGT 2010 final live and in full and no way would I have picked that over Eurovision.
March 21, 201114 yr Oops, BGT was the week after ESC last year, it clashed with the top 40(?) being revealed.
