Beverley Knight announces new album

Beverley Knight has announced that she is to release a new covers album containing her favourite UK soul classics.

The 'Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda' singer is due to release the LP, titled Soul UK, on June 27.

The album will include hits by George Michael and Jamiroquai, as well as Princess's 1985 hit 'Say I'm Your Number One', which was produced by Stock, Aitken and Waterman.

Soul UK will be Knight's seventh full-length record, following her top 20 album 100% which was released in 2009.

Knight is to precede the LP release with her new single 'Mama Used To Say', a cover of the 1982 classic by Junior.

The British soul singer performed the album in full at London's Porchester Hall on April 7, which was filmed and will be included as a bonus DVD with the album.

The tracklisting for Soul UK is as follows:

1. 'Fairplay'

2. 'Southern Freeze'

3. 'Mama Used To Say'

4. 'Say I'm Your Number One'

5. 'When You Gonna Learn'

6. 'Apparently Nothing' (feat. Glen Scott And Roots Manuva)

7. 'Don't Be A Fool'

8. 'Always And Forever'

9. 'Round and Round'

10. 'Cuddly Toy'

11. 'One More Try'

12. 'Damn'

13. 'Nothing Like This'

Here are some links to the originals, if anyone's interested in hearing them or doesn't know them. I was at the gig on Thursday and was embarrassed to find that I didn't know any of the tracks! But that's partly a good thing. When I heard she was doing a covers album I was majorly disappointed, but these songs are all essentially new to me. If it were an album of soul classics like "I Say A Little Prayer", "Ain't Nobody" etc. I'd find it hard to be excited but I can't wait to have her versions of them now!

01.

02.

03. Junior - Mama Used To Say (1982)

04. Princess - Say I'm Your Number One (1985)

05.

06. Young Disciples - Apparently Nothin' (1991)

07.

08. Heatwave - Always And Forever (1978)

09. Jaki Graham - Round And Round (1985)

10. Roachford - Cuddly Toy (1989)

11. George Michael - One More Try (1988)

12. Lewis Taylor - Damn (1996)

13.

I'll post some of the videos I, and others, took but definitely check out "One More Try" and "Always and Forever" as they were easily the highlights for me. Beautiful songs, like they were made for her. The one thing I do find strange is that her image for this era seems to be the hottest/best/most current/youngest I've seen her looking in ages, it totally doesn't go with the image for the album. It's like she gets the image right or the album right, rarely both.

Mama Used To Say

One More Try

Always and Forever

Say I'm Your Number One

When You Gonna Learn

Southern Freeze

Cuddly Toy

Apparently Nothin'

The prospect of this album has never excited me a great deal I have to admit, though like Aaron I'm not that familiar with most of the originals of these songs either - so thats something I suppose.

As long as the wait for an original material album isnt too long afterwards, I suppose Bev doing covers is better than nothing at all.

LOVE the chanting at the start of 'Mama Used To Say'. GO BEV, GO BEV.

I'm not particularly KEEN on the idea atm, I may give it a listen though (:

I think it's hard, as a fan, to ever be excited for an album of covers. It's just not what you want to see your favourite resort to. But, seeing the tracklist, I'm seeing it less as her 'resorting' to it and more as it being something she wants to do. If she was desperate, it'd be covers of songs everyone knows. I just think it's her covering a bunch of some of her favourite lesser known tracks, it kinda feels genuine?

That said, I'm hoping for the next album pretty soon. I'd hope it'd be less than a year away, but I guess summer 2012 is the best we can hope for.

Ahaha, I never noticed that and I filmed it. That's how cool us Bev fans are.

Yeah, you should give it a listen! Not sure there's much on there that'll be your thing, but it should be a decent album.

It's like Sharleen Spiteri's album of covers all over again :(

Gonna give them all a chance and a good listen, can't not with it being Bev, just hope she'll tour again ^_^

Oh yeah, must be a shame for another one of your faves to be releasing covers!

I think it's a set of quality songs, it's just a shame they're covers. I'm sure she's bound to tour it! I just hope the next proper album is soon after.

Anyway, this album is now out on July 4th. "Fairplay" has been played on radio, and is on Youtube thanks to me:

"Mama Used To Say" and "When You Gonna Learn" have leaked/been played on radio.

Mama Used To Say

When You Gonna Learn

Nice. I think I slightly prefer "When You Gonna Learn" actually, though "Mama Used To Say" is obviously a better single choice. I think this album is gonna have a nice sound to it, the production on the tracks is good so far.

I'm a lot more excited about this album now than I was initially. Loving the tracks I've heard so far!
