Posted May 20, 201114 yr Here we go again on another Friday with a look at what's being selling in the World of Songs this week. Compiled from a host of data from an average of 5 years evidence from iTunes (80%) & the other download sites/physical sales (20%) using figures & not pure guesswork because you need something to go on & I don't mean the toilet! Though some would suggets otherwise. Thanks to the trio of other members for your emails this week & I hope you have recieved the charts I sent to you for various days & the sales numbers etc. Which does actually prove we don't just sit down & scribble a load of rot down each week. Don't forget the Classic Retro Countdown with Mr Taylor & Richard Todd on Sunday (Atlantic Oldies 2NG) at 2pm. If you missed last week's it was May 1977 & you can hear it, if you contact me because I'm not allowed to post links (against rules). I've now taken over as Producer on the Fresh Hit40UK & that chart is now ahead of everyone else on Sundays, cos we use a 24 hour sliding scale from iTunes & those itsy bitsy physicals giving us virtual midweek charts 3 days early. Thanks for reading. All other comments gladly welcome.
May 20, 201114 yr Blue bigger than Gaga...would only happen on the physical chart! Jedward's physical has been out for months, interesting to see people finally rushing out to buy it in their tens this week :D Would love Eric, Ell and Nikki and A Friend In London to get official top 75 hits but I'm guessing it won't happen and we'll be left with just the two.
May 20, 201114 yr New to this, I don't get how this Almost Saturday UK Top Singles work. Can someone explain to me?
May 20, 201114 yr I just hope Reggie does not give the game away too early on Sunday with his chart stats as there could be no non-movers. And there must be the odd couple of physicals of Jermaine Stewart's track lurking about in some indie shops that are still around, that could have been exchanged over the counter, I wouldn't count that as a download entry.

Are you sure? I must admit I did not realise until this afternoon that Jermaine was dead. Then discovered it was an AIDS related Liver failure in 1997.
May 20, 201114 yr I just hope Reggie does not give the game away too early on Sunday with his chart stats as there could be no non-movers. There's no battle for the #1 this week. Pitbull has had it in the bag ever since he overtook Bruno on the Thursday mids.
May 20, 201114 yr Author There's no battle for the #1 this week. Pitbull has had it in the bag ever since he overtook Bruno on the Thursday mids. Pitbull really crashed at 11443 on iTunes for Wednesday's 24 hour period, after 4731 on Tuesday & 4573 on Monday, though was back to 5170 for Thursday. Bruno was 3519 for Thursday, with 5189 on Monday, 4315 on Tuesday, but 8269 on Wednesday. Wednesday seems to have been the peak for them both. Average trends tell me that nothing will clear 60,000 this week. Then next week, we gotta keep our eyes on Aloe Blacc, he could do it in the end, as he's very close to the top 3 by a whisker. May 21, 201114 yr If none will sell 60k plus! Saturdays have a brilliant chance next week as no doubt they will get 50k+

May 21, 201114 yr You never know, there could be the odd one floating about in charity shops for 50p  Charity shop sales don't register for the chart, as they are basically re-sales of singles already counted in the past when originally bought in official outlets.
May 21, 201114 yr would be amazing if aloe blacc rose to no1 next week..although if it failed because of the saturdays i will be very angry!!
May 21, 201114 yr That talk about Jermaine Stewart still selling the od physical single (I didn't know he was no longer with us either, but if it was in 1997 why the reentry now?) reminded me of something I've been meaning to ask for a long time. Back in the pre-OCC days of the official charts (I'm really thinking abt 70s/80s B.M.R.B/Gallup days) it was often possible for really old singles to chart on the original catalgue no years after the release. Did record shops of the time sell both new and second hand records and submit the catalog no's of both types of sale in their log books in those days? Or did labels keep a lot of their back catalog in regular supply for years after release? Sorry if that seems an off topic question but it's something I've wondered for a while and I've never seen chart elligibility rules from before abt 1989 ish.

Previously to OCC (who are not Chart Compilers, by the way), it was CIN (Chart Information Network). Both over see the charts. Today's compilers are Milward Brown (since 1993). They are a market research company. Actually BMRB was swallowed up by them, about 5 years ago. In the 70s & 80s, a chart single had a shelf life of 3 years before being deleted. It something like say "I'm Gonna Run Away From You" by Tami Lynn for instance, became popular again (because it were being played on the Northern Soul Scene). Then basically a cost saving measure, was to re-press it from the original. Hence the same catalogue number etc, & the same date on it, even though it was not correct. Another example being "Your Honour" & Pluto. 1976 original pressing (on some copies) actually had the actual Autumn date of release on it, even though it was re-released in February 1982.
