Yes, "Heartbreak Hotel" was only released in late 2000 in the UK for her GH. I think Radio 1 playlisted the garage remix, I dont think people warmed up to it.

I do remember "Kryptonite", actually all those huge rock songs from that time were hits here in Portugal too, which is why I remember them so well. Kryptonite is ok, but not really my thing. "Bent", "Story Of A Girl" and "Everything She Wants" are less rockier and more melodic, I guess that's why I prefer them. Everclear's "Wonderful" is another one. But my tastes are kinda weird, I do like some Garbage, Linkin Park and that big Papa Roach tune but harder rock songs are exceptions to the rule. Melody for me is vital: for example I like Oasis' "Wonderwall" and "Stand By Me" but hate "Hindu Times and "Lyla". In U2's case, I like "One", "Beautiful Day" and cant stand "Vertigo" or "Get On Your Boots" which are a lot less melodic and very grating for me.

The indie-rock wave in the mid 00s completely killed the genre for me and nowadays its even more rare for me to like a rock song, but then I dont think they are anywhere near as good as they were back then. Although I say the same for RnB, Dance and Pop, but its easier for me to like those.

PS: I do hate Nickelback, and I find their US success baffling! The only song I liked by them was "Far Away", and that failed to be a UK hit.

'Jar Of Hearts' by Christina Perri, that is covered in Glee tomorrow night. One of my favourite songs of 2010, top 20 in the US, seemed to hang around for ages. Only been released today in the UK iirc, shame they haven't given it a big push over here :(

edit: Guess I could also say pretty much anything by Taylor Swift. 'Mine', debuted at #3 in the US, big sales - only #30 over here.

was it that big in the us??must be why radio 1 continue to play it daily!!

I'm not sure exactly how big, but it was in the year-end top 25, because it's in the DJ Earworm 2009 mash-up, so it was a relatively big hit.

Yes vidcapper!

and it was the most played pop song on US radio, bigger than poker face and i gotta feeling.

Definately Colbie Caillat - Bubbly,

completed wasted over here.

Even more so was Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat - Lucky. Didnt even chart here......

Love this tune so much. Completely forgot about it.

Not sure what happened with it not charting over here, whether it wasn't released or just flopped, but it really should have been a hit.

I'm not lying when I say that this is one of the tunes that got me into music in the first place.

Wow, that's quite high praise! I have to admit I only heard it a couple of years ago; I'm not sure if it was actually released here but I never heard it anywhere and didn't really know it existed for that reason but it's a decent tune.

I would say Kryptonite is pretty melodic personally, especially in the chorus which has a very strong melody, but indeed a bit rockier and bigger on the guitars. And yeah, all those songs flopped here, but Nickelback took off with an even crappier version a couple of years later. Sometimes I don't understand the UK charts  Maybe we were too interested in nu-metal US rock bands for those types to be a hit at the time though, and Nickelback came along when that genre wasn't as big. Just a theory.

Another R&B hit from the time that should definitely be mentioned here is Usher's - Nice and Slow, which was a massive US #1 hit but only got to #24 here - despite it following up a UK #1 in You Make Me Wanna. Criminal position for one of the best songs of Usher's career and a classic R&B slow jam. The song's underperformance was so damning that (similar to Enrique mentioned earlier) Usher didn't release another single here until Pop Ya Collar off the next album (which was the opposite of this thread: a UK hit but US flop).

You could also add Next - Too Close (later covered by Blue and taken to #1), Shai - If You Ever Fall In Love (later covered by East 17 & Gabrielle and taken to #2), Silk - Freak Me (later covered by Another Level and taken to #1), Adina Howard - Freak Like Me (later lyrically covered by Sugababes and taken to #1), Divine - Lately (later covered and taken to #6 by Samantha Mumba)... hmm, is anybody noticing a trend here?

More I would add (not necessarily R&B now), and most of them only post-1980s as I don't know a thing about the Hot 100 before then:

Cyndi Lauper - She-Bop (US #3, UK #46 - famously about masturbation, why did this flop here?)

Dr Dre - Nuthin But A G Thang (from Dre's first album, widely regarded as a hip hop classic - US #2, UK #31)

Erykah Badu - Bag Lady (US #6, UK DNC)

Ginuwine - Differences (US #4, UK DNC - beautiful song, not sure if it was released here but doubt it would have been a hit anyway)

Goo Goo Dolls - Iris (US #9 (but #1 airplay), UK #26 - not a big fan of this song but it's very famous, so I'd add it here, and I'm surprised nobody else mentioned it)

Groove Theory - Tell Me (US #5, UK #31)

Mariah Carey - basically every song she did between Vision of Love and I'll Be There

Monica - Don't Take It Personal (US #2, UK #32 - early single from Monica, who never broke through here off her own back and is now only remembered in the UK for The Boy Is Mine)

Sarah McLachlan - Angel (US #4, UK #36 - quite a famous song today, so that position looks even more ridiculous)

I didn't know Iris was so big there :o :o that would be top of my list, absolutely fabulous song      26 is far too low!

At the time songs that didnt get a single release werent allowed to chart, so songs like Torn, Don't Speak, Iris, Men In Black, etc, didnt chart at all. However, the rules changed in 1999, just in time for Iris to go top10,but by then the song was losing popularity, so it didnt become a #1 hit that it could've been. All the songs I mentioned were huge airplay #1 hits.

I noticed Too Close and Lately, mostly because I remembered the originals and the cover versions in the UK. "Lately" really is divine

The reverse also happened, Monica covered Angel Of Mine by Eternal and took that song to the top of the Hot100, the original never charted over there

Can't believe hey soul sister has been missed out, narrowly missed out on the best selling single in 2010 in the US and only peaked at no.18 and also I'm Yours, another song that is one of only 10 songs in the digital era to sell over 5 million in the US and it peaked at 11, however, i'm glad both have become well known for great longevity in the charts
^ Yeah, I would've counted Hey, Soul Sister and I'm Yours as hits in the UK tbh. This did massively underperform compared to the US, but they still did well here. As you said, their chart peaks don't suggest that, but both had incredible longevity.

Hey Soul Sister's a good one, but I think that was a relatively big hit, it spent a long time in the top 40 even though it only peaked at 18, in fact it outsold some number 1s from last year

I think it's still in the itunes top 200 now

Oops, I just noticed in my post before it says Iris peaked at #1! That was a typo (hence why I put airplay #1 in brackets), it of course peaked at #9

Lately is indeed an excellent song, although I adore those kind of R&B ballads and miss them terribly. It's funny though about the UK acts covering previous US hits that I mentioned. At the time I hadn't heard the originals of most of them (although I knew that the Blue song was a cover for some reason, I think I might have seen the original on Kiss one time) so it was quite a surprise a few years later to discover all these songs were covers! I know that late 90s/early 00s pop acts were famed for releasing covers an awful lot but recycling old US hits but UK flops does strike me as a little cheap and trying to fool people into thinking the songs were original. Maybe it's just me though but I don't like that practice at all.

Good point about Monica, that was indeed a strange practice. On the subject of Eternal, do you know if they released all their singles in the US? I always found it weird they only had one US hit (Stay at #19) as I'd have thought they would have fitted like hand to glove in the US charts. Monica's success with Angel of Mine clearly proves it was a very US-friendly song and I'd say the same about much of their other material. Although in AOM's case there was the ruckus with Kelle Bryan getting sacked not long after it was released so maybe they had plans to release it there but it was scuppered by that. I'm sure they still must have been kicking themselves anyway.
