Someone asked for a topic like this to be made so I made it. :D

Personally going to null vote this as I've only really followed music since 2009.

I've detailed what I loved so much about 2006 in the other thread. 2007 had a stunning amount of songs that I would regard amongst my all time favourites (Shine, Rule The World, Song 4 Mutya, With Every Heartbeat, Believe Again, Bleeding Love etc...), 2009 was just stunningly high quality all round for me, how can I argue with a year where Agnes knocks Alexander Rybak out of the UK top ten? For once my favourite Euro songs somehow managed to take off here, completely unexpectedly!

Right down to the bottom three of 2004, where the charts were at their absolute WORST but saved by the presence of new albums from both Delta and The Corrs (), 2011 which has been Club Banger Nation so far, to quote Nicole Scherzinger - but there haven't really been that many 'classics' for me in the first almost half of the year - maybe only just the one in On The Floor, aside from a few Eurovision entries that I've loved. And then 2003 where I almost lost all interest in music - the stuff in the charts wasn't to my taste at all I'm afraid, and the stuff that I found on my own which wasn't in the charts was just as poor  If it wasn't for Delta's arrival, my favourite song of the year would have been Carnival Girl by Texas - I think that says it all!

I've followed music since sometime in 2003 iirc, I remember listening to the chart show back then and watching chart shows like "Top Of The Pops" and "The Chart Show", of course those shows died and I eventually stopped listening to the charts but still listened to radio and watched music channels

I started following the charts again in 2010 (maybe the RATM campaign got me interested, not sure) but music and the charts is my favourite thing in the world right now (this is why I'm on an Internet forum)

I don't really know what year to pick, I don't have a favourite as all years had the good and the bad. My favourite song of all time comes from 2006 though (I'm purposely not telling what it is as that will reveal the number one to my dance hits countdown)

Good question.

In my opinion. It's pretty close between the top four. Barely anything this year has excited me yet.

Anyone remember 1999? Man, music that year was just terrible... It was nothing but singles from soap stars, crappy trance, a Latin revivial and the birth of Westlife. Oh yeah, and the Vengaboys too.

Honestly, I'm almost ashamed to have been alive that year.

I went for 2006 chartwise because so many classic songs from the noughties came from that year such as Hips Don't Lie, Crazy and Patience and a good thing about it was that they were very varied. For music in general, I picked 2003, difficult decision as 2004, 2006 and 2009 were all really great but 2003 was such a groundbreaking year in my opinion, not just because it was the start of the massive mid noughties slump but the quality of music was so high imo and many songs were released that managed to sound fresh yet take specific genres of music in a new direction such as In Da Club by 50 Cent which created a new sound for hip hop. Also, it introduced many new artists who would go on to become some of the biggest stars with Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas And Girls Aloud and their songs released then are imo still there best today

If I'm being honest, each year probably got better until about 2009 and then it's pretty much peaked.

Each year music became easier to discover so each year I heard more music that I really liked. The last couple of years though it's kind of been impossible for me to listen to any more music than I did....

In terms of what's charted mainstream, 2002 was pretty special. My top 20 of that year had some incredible stuff in it, although not much could be classed as being a big hit.

Blur saved that year releasing two of the 90s very finest singles

Fortunately I don't, but I've also heard the "dreadful" Millenium prayer by Cliff Richard, the best thing from that year was Blue (Da Ba Dee) without a doubt though

Coffee & TV genuinely was - and I'm hardly BJ's biggest indie fan...

1999 was great for me too (Runaway, Better Off Alone, 9PM (Till I Come), Erase/Rewind etc...), a step down from 1998 but that was my favourite year of all time musically by quite a huge margin. Whatever 'sound' was going on in that year was completely to my taste - the string laden pop, the brilliant dance, the diversity and ability for any song of any genre by any artist of any age to do well, the epic ballads which have all gone on to be modern classics, and the obvious one - The Corrs being the biggest act of the year :cheer:

Yes unfortunately, as much as I loved 1999 it did throw up THAT - my least favourite song of all time. No puke emoticon is enough to describe my hatred...

I'd go:

It's really difficult to rank though. There's only a few years I outright hated, and all years have their pluses and minuses music-wise, plus certain genres are stronger at different times, so it's hard... Especially the latter ranking, as there's no year I really hated there. I'm pretty certain on the first though, even if it does make me look a bit old man-ish with the start of the decade pretty much at the top and the end of the decade basically at the bottom.

And also, how are we defining a chart hit here? I've gone for top 20-ish, surely stuff that didn't even make the top 40 for example wouldn't be classified as a hit, so would fit more with the latter?

2001 does stand out as a very revolutionary year, though - arguably the point popular music changed and shaped for the rest of the decade, with the urban like Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Jay-Z; pop like Britney working with The Neptunes, Jennifer Lopez working with Murda Inc; and then The Strokes kicking off the sound of mainstream rock music for the next few years. It was also the first year of a reality TV, most notably :(

I have not been very keen on this year at all really. Some good songs but it's not over yet. I remember feeling disillusioned after the amazing 2009 and the dull first half of last year, only to have all those massive defining hits be released from the summer onwards.

I would rank them like this (on both, as I usually listen to chart music):

2005 (no idea about all this hate it gets, my favourite song of all time charted this year, plus it had many great and diverse songs charting that have become classics)

2006 (the year I started following the charts, plus there were a lot of my all time favourites from this year)

2003 (I think this as despite the fact the charts were a bit slow, most of the number 1s were genuinely deserved and have become classics, plus I have a lot of favourites from here as well but not necessarily doing well in the charts, Hurt is a key example)

2008 (there were some songs I truly hated that did well this year, but mainly I thought the charts were very good with a wide range of music charting, seriously all the number 1s were so diverse, plus I would like it as it was the year Coldplay got a number 1 :D )

2000 (whilst most of it was a bit 'before my time', some real gems came out of this year- they weren't all necessarily the biggest hits though, like my favourites like Beautiful Day, One More Time, All The Small Things and It's My Life didn't have high sales figures, but they were my favourite songs of the year)

2009 (I thought this was a good year actually, the Rage-Joe battle was unforgettable, genre was still quite spread out and no crap really sold, the best sellers list have mainly stood the test of time well)

2010 (this was the year that the charts started to lose their diversity and the 'non' number 1s speak for themselves, still, it was a good year all round)

2001 (not the best year for number 1s, but this was generally a pretty good year, a lot of guilty pleasures really)

2002 (I don't actually recall a lot from this year, apart from Pop Idol really  still it was decent)

2004 (on the outlook, there was a lot of $h!t released this year, I hardly remember most of the top 10 hits even when there were about 6 in a week, there was some genuinely great music though, in fact quite a lot of it, but that wasn't really reflected in the songs with the high sales)

2007 (I never really liked this year, mainly because there were so few number 1s and every time a fresh new release came about, it was stopped from number 1 by a four week old song, plus the fact that one of my worst songs of all time spent seven weeks at number 1 :puke: and it was just difficult for me to get excited about the charts and I have few favourites from this year, I indeed considered stopping listening altogether with that sodding Umbrella there :arrr: )

2011 so far (mainly because its only 'so far' but generally I think its been the least varied its been in years, the charts are too slow at points and so far there's not really a lot of songs I genuinely love and will still be listening to in a years time)

2003 is so far ahead over everything else it was almost like a year from the mid-90s for me. 2005 was great too.

You missed out 2004.

Gosh. This is really difficult. My favourite years were 2003 to 2008 for sure. And 2010 was brilliant too. But I only really started following the charts in 2008 so, I don't know if the songs I liked were doing well in the charts. Although I suspect they were, as I have quite a mainstream music taste, and I have looked back at older charts from time to time to see where my favourite songs ended up.
Oddly, despite it being my least favourite year for music by quite some margin, the album that I would regard as my all time favourite was released in 2003! Perhaps I was just SO pleased that somebody had finally released some good music in that year, that I was treating Delta as the saviour of my love for music. I wonder if I'd be quite such a fan had she debuted in 2006? Probably not :o
