Is it rather high? Because when you look at the itunes chart it usually gives you an indicator of who will be number one at the weekend.

So does anybody know what percentage itunes holds? And amazon for that matter?

thanks!

From what I've gathered, iTunes seems to make up most of the singles sales now. Definitely the majority, probably leaning towards 80%.

Not sure about Amazon, but I've always thought of it as the second-biggest download site, so it's got to have quite a bit of the rest that the iTunes monster hasn't taken.

There other major download sites such as Napster, 7 Digital, HMV. iTunes must have around 65-70% share, I read it somwhere.

Do a lot of people actually use '7 Digital' & 'Napster' anymore? I know that the HMV MP3/Digital store is on the increase though.

If Amazon started promoting their Digital Store in the UK like they are in the US it can easily grow much bigger.

No way! Their share wasn't even at 80% *before* Amazon downloads launched.

My guess would be somewhere between 3/5th's & 2/3rd's.

You know, unnecessary apostrophes aside, you don't even needs to put 'ths' or 'rds' on the end of fractions. '3/5' is typically read as 'three fifths'.

And that posting was relavant to the topic, how? ;)

Because you posted that in this topic.

Except that mine was about the topic, yours was merely punctuation correction. :)

Would have made everyone's life easier if the original of the 4 or 5 posts above had read 60%-67%.

Which I happen to agree with. 80% is WAY too high, especially with the overinflated prices charged by iTunes.

iTunes was 65% at the end of last year. Likely it's dropped off a bit since then.

Amazon, Napster, Digital 7 all on the next biggest percentage.

HMV, Tesco hardly worth a note, probably in line with the dead physical.

Then you've got the hidden sales of Artists own sites & various other bits too.

I remember an article somewhere, with a pie chart that had iTunes had the biggest share, I believe Napster, Digital 7, HMV, Amazon where the next biggest, with a small percentage on Others. Amazon could have been with the Others. I can't even remember where I saw the article not sure if it was a Guardian article piece.

I just thought it was a decent estimate. I had no idea, really. Also, I didn't say 80, I said leaning towards 80, which hopefully implies something a bit less. It certainly wasn't going to be above 80.
