June 3, 201114 yr Pretty good on first listen, it's not what I was expecting from their comeback (in a good way). Does start to get a bit repetitive by the end though.
June 3, 201114 yr I quite like it. I pretty much like all of Coldplay's stuff, but it didn't amaze me or anything. I guess it may be a grower. It's definitely very nice, a word that I perhaps overuse or use in the wrong places :P
June 3, 201114 yr Oh I'm not too sure if I love it after a first listen. Viva la vida was much more instant and original I think. This one has a Christmassy feel to it
June 3, 201114 yr I hoped something as warm and lovely as the best songs on AROBTTH because music industry really needs songs like that to be pushed to popularity. I got dishwater. Warm, but nothing lovely. Very disappointed. Edited June 3, 201114 yr by SKOB
June 3, 201114 yr on first listen I really like this :D then again, I'm a huge Coldplay loon so that was expected :heehee: seriously though, I think it's much better than Christmas Lights which was far too standard for them, has more of an electronic, relaxing feel than some of their other stuff
June 3, 201114 yr But this is not a classic Coldplay single by any means. Not anything that helped them to sell millions of albums. I have a feeling that the new album will bomb (relatively speaking = platinum sales).
June 3, 201114 yr Not a fan of theirs but it's decent. I just wish it wasn't the same chords throughout the whole song, the chorus and the verses kinda merge into one and by the end of the song you get a tad bored of it.
June 3, 201114 yr Do you think they actually meant to call the song this? Was it a title Chris Martin came up with during his sixth form years?
June 3, 201114 yr Much as I love it, I don't think this is intended as their big comeback single. Violet Hill anyone?
June 3, 201114 yr Only heard it twice today but... well... it's Coldplay-by-numbers really, isn't it? He even sounds bored singing it....
June 3, 201114 yr Much as I love it, I don't think this is intended as their big comeback single. Violet Hill anyone? Possibly. But title track that's not supposed to be the "true lead single", I'm having Born This Way flashbacks
June 3, 201114 yr I've decided that this has immensely grown on me. Really gave me good hopes for the new era.
June 3, 201114 yr I am not a Coldplay fan. I have enjoyed a few of their songs in the past like 'Viva La Vida', 'Speed Of Sound' and 'Fix You' but I have to say on first listen I love this :o I was expecting another awful thing, 'Christmas Lights' eque, but this is great.
June 4, 201114 yr This is not the worst example but in general, I don't really get the point of releasing one of the worst songs on album as "a buzz track" or lead single. Why disappoint people intentionally? It takes a lot effort to win them back! Violet Hill is still awesome though, as is Viva la Vida. The album, however, was quite mediocre. I totally lost interest in Arctic Monkeys after the pointless Brick by Brick as it clearly indicated that what they once had is now gone. Why bands don't want to be popular any more? Rock/alternative will never be back in top 10 as long as bands release only music they think is cool, not what's good. And who the f*** cares if a band is "good live" if they can't write good songs! Part of me hopes that the times when NME etc. hyped the bands in the wake of ONE song would be back. Because usually at least that one song was pretty damn good. Now rock/alternative acts only tour and take the money and don't bother to release anything the public should be excited about! All good music comes either from the pop side or individuals who aren't afraid to take risks: Lady Gaga, Bon Iver (a band but lead by a strong leader), PJ Harvey etc Of course indie fans know the good stuff but for the buying public amazing bands like Wild Beasts, Metronomy say nothing. So what the industry needs are strong poprock songs to take over! Coldplay of all the bands are able to do that but they seem to try as hard as they can to avoid it. Same with the Arctic Monkeys, Gorillaz... Plenty of examples. These acts are popular enough to be playlisted with new singles but all of them have released D class songs and people just don't care anymore, except their fans of course. Sorry about this post :P
June 4, 201114 yr I know what you mean Skob. I think Lady GaGa missed the trick single wise, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. It really doesn't look like its hindered her album sales, if anything it's cemented her place as the world'd biggest popstar at this moment in time. This track is something quite different to all the singles they've released before, so perhaps it's a good marketing programme by their team. Is this a free download or not? Anyway they've been gone really for 3 years, they need to take advantage of the huge marketing system the internet offers. They did it last time very well/ I'm expecting they will do it very well this time as well. As much as I love Coldplay, I would always place them in the same ilk as Paulo Nutini, Dido, Adele as opposed to Arctic Monkeys, Kaiser Chiefs etc.
June 4, 201114 yr Gaga's album is so strong that nobody remembers the mediocrity of the first single(s). Scheisse, Bloody Mary, Hair etc... fantastic pop songs. Tbh I can't really say anything objective about Coldplay because their first two albums once were the soundtrack of my life and what I really want from them is to hear another "Clocks". But I'm also sure I'm not the only one who thinks that way. "Don't go chasing waterfalls/Please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to" :P Edited June 4, 201114 yr by SKOB

Why disappoint people intentionally? It takes a lot effort to win them back! Did Coldplay actually say that they think it's one of the worst songs on the album, and that they knew they were gonna disappoint people intentionally? If not, then what you are saying is completely brainless, I'm sorry. You are disappointed with the song, but how does that make the disappointment intentional on the band's part? Maybe they thought it is one of the best songs on the album, you know!? Edited June 4, 201114 yr by Mattias
June 4, 201114 yr Of course it might be the best song on the album. No one knows except the band themselves. But I've noticed a trend that the first leak/buzz single/whatever floating on the internet is pretty weak compared to other songs which I think is pretty pointless strategy.

But I've noticed a trend that the first leak/buzz single/whatever floating on the internet is pretty weak compared to other songs which I think is pretty pointless strategy. How do you know it's their strategy? Maybe they have just put out the song that they felt should introduce the album. I highly doubt that they actually think "Hmm, let's put out this song because it's weak". Maybe they think they are putting out strong songs. It just seems that you disagree with Coldplay, that's all. People don't always like the same songs.
