no idea if this is right, off the top of my head and likely wrong but have a go  , The Paper Dolls, The Vernon Girls, probably too late for the Beverley Sisters....

Vernon Girls were one I hadnt thought of, I had the Paperdolls and The Caravelles. Beverley Sisters didnt make the top 20 during the sixties.

Never heard of that Donny & Marie song.

Sadly we missed Ian Dury’s one week at number one as it was presented by David Patrick Griffin. When the single was first played on the radio, the idea of it ever topping the chart seemed so absurd it wasn’t worth considering its chances.

As for this week, a real mixed bag. Some good stuff, a fantastic number one and some real dross.

Edwin Starr over the chart and then into Nazareth for the first act. A minor hit but long forgotten by me.

Three Degrees again. Just as boring as it was last week.

Oh dear, Mike Read is wearing leather trousers. Anyway, The Members next - that’s better. There’s a bloke in the audience with very colourful hair.

Sally Oldfield adds to the repeats from last week.

UFO with one of their two top 40 hits. The title of the other one (Young Blood) may appear in this week’s top 40.

Two Man Sound - they were from Belgium. That’s all you need to know. Apparently the bongo player wrote Ca Plane Pour Moi for Plastic Bertrand. The world of Belgian pop is a small one.

Generation X raise the tone. Such convincing miming from Mr Idol.

Back to the long-forgotten stuff with the Pointer Sisters. This wasn’t a big hit (number 61) but, sadly, they didn’t give up.

Blondie at number one with the magnificent Heart Of Glass. The single version was an extended version of the song which appeared on Parallel Lines and was the first chart-topper for Debbie and the lads although we have to put with Legs & Co this week.

And Abba to play us out. Much as I like Chiquitita, it’s a bit like an inferior rehash of Fernando with some plinkety plonk piano (missing tonight) added at the end.

Never much of a fan of the Members meself, sort of wannabee Sham 69 cokney-geeeezahs (for this single, maybe it was a parody) and The Monkees Pleasant Valley Sunday was a more articulate version of what they were trying to say. Poor them being all suburban and bored and what have you while my family were living it up down t'pits (1979) or on t'dole (3 generations 1980).

Blondie, classic then, class now, still great singles popping out (see Beth Ditto).

Nazereth are one of the unfairly forgotten acts of the 70's, a great string of poprock singles, check out Bad bad Boy or My White Bicycle. (all their great stuff has of course been obliterated by the BEEB)

Pointer Sisters = class soul. They even covered Springsteen, successfully, long before The Bruce managed a hit. Bruce is back with great stuff as I type.

Abba: I recall the main talking point when Chiquitita came out being that it was Fernando part 2. It's not really, apart from the Latino name and being essentially a ballad for the most part and being sung by Abba. Chiquitita has a rousing Circus climax, one song was a marching-drum-ish story about a revolutionary, one an acoustic guitar-flavoured sad child song (for UNESCO, all profits donated to children's charity). It is, of course, brilliant.

Billy Idol never liked miming much, his sneering probably evolved out of that more than mimicking Elvis. His solo career was the quality stuff, but the pastiche rocknroll here was fine B-)

I'm not overkeen on the song and to this day am surprised that it was a No.1.

Dan Hartman over the chart. It will get better. Won’t it?

But before it gets better we get Mick Jackson following up Blame It On The Boogie with another of his compositions. Shame he bothered really.

And so on to Bonnie Tyler. Oh no, it’s Rod Stewart. Still not sexy but now singing about his female dog called Love.

Now it does get better at last with some Abba. Will we get the plinkety plonk piano bit this time? Sadly not.

Micky Dolenz drops in to see Elvis Costello. Now it really is getting good as we enjoy Declan’s biggest hit. Dolenz was once married to early TOTP hostess Samantha Juste who died yesterday.

The quality couldn’t last. It’s Leif Garrett. Wearing a younger version of Rod Stewart’s hair. Well I saw his face, now I’m a Beliefer. Or not.

And so on to the regular Darts slot. Not their best but still pretty decent.

Some rock (sort of) from Judas Priest. Yes they actually had a hit. It was rubbish but it was still a hit. I’m sure that’s Sid Snot on vocals.

On to the Jacksons with Destiny. I hope they kept Destiny’s child well away from Michael.

And some real class at number one from Blondie. Somewhere around this time I saw them at the Hammersmith Odeon as it then was.

Gene Chandler to play out with something I don’t remember at all. With luck it will have faded from memory again very soon.

Do you actually like music Suedehead2? Or are you just an aging punk rocker :heehee:

good to see I'm not the only one with a "Judas Priest rubbish shocker" opinion...

Quite a catchy chorus on that song though!

Quite a catchy chorus on that song though!

that's probably why I bought it from the bargain bins and charted it

On the plus side it's better than Breaking The Law....!

There was a alot of controversy in the mid 80's about Judus Priest, two teenagers in America killed themselves cause they apparently thought they heard subliminal messages in their songs.
DLT cleared of all charges now. Let's see his TOTP episodes now BBC. Anyone know if he did any/many in '79.

The jury failed to reach a verdict on two charges so he may yet face a retrial on those counts. A decision is due by Feb 24.
