They got the three album deal on the brandname alone. Sugababes is still a big brandname in European Pop Music and they have spent 9 years as Islands Cash Cow [business term meaning that they raked in the dough for them] and the goodwill attached to the brandname means that they are still a very good investment.

If the material is good, then this album will sell well and Sony will have made a good deal.

This should secure them an X Factor slot as being a Sony artist does make it much easier to get on the show.

As they've signed to Sony UK it'll be Columbia they've signed too as they deal with the Pop acts signed to Sony in the UK.

They could equally be on Sony CMG or RCA imo.

RCA is apparently the Indie/Alternative label for Sony UK with Columbia being the Pop/RnB label.

There isn't a page on Wiki for CMG so I dunno who they are

I went on the SonyUK website and it had this link

although i thought it used to be Sony BMG.

In Russian music stores Change, C&S albums + one of 2.0 albums is basically a must. Usually Sugababes have their own sticker with which it's easier to find their albums (although sometimes spelled incorrectly, e.g. Sugarbabes). So I can see why it's not hard for them to get a new deal, they're a big name in all Europe.

The question is why Island dropped them then. Apparently Sugababes+Crown offered them new material three times from Island financed sessions, but all the times the label didn't like it. In January they were supposed to go and record with producers in Sweden and USA, but they flew back from Sweden, as Island suddenly cut the finances for them. Maybe after this they were dropped and started working with Crown-related producers only. Or maybe they were dropped later, like month ago, or so. Then Crown found the Nokia thing and the single campaign is financed from this ad income. And then they probably set an agreement with Sony. Of what kind it is the agreement we are still yet to know. But that all still doesn't answer my question why Island dropped them, when they already invested in the album (although all investments went into rejected tracks), then they basically didn't invest anything in the further material, got a ready album, with the first single campaign being financed by the Nokia commercial and.... dropped them? Really weird. That's why I think this whole agreement came into the light in January.

ACTUALLY, the new compilation news started in January too:

http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=123601

So it proves my point that Island and Sugababes decided to part their ways that time, after Island rejected the tracks again and cut their finances. And to fullfill the contract they decided to release some compilation which turned out to be a B-sides collection.

Nokia will only have agreed to do an ad campaign after hearing the song and they won't have heard the song until very recently. So it's likely they recorded sans record deal [Like AWDF was] then a label was sought out with Island agreeing not to announce the split until a new home had been found.

Or with constant rejections of the material, Mark 'Noted Cuntface' Hargreaves, went elsewhere and got signed then told Island to shove it.

Lol at the America rumours I swear that comes around every album. With Amelle retweeting about them signing to Sony it looks promising.
Colour me shocked that Sony saw fit to pick them up on a three album deal - especially after the performance of the last two albums...

It's the standard for every artist. As Amelle has mentioned it in some form, I'm taking out the "rumour" of the title.

Sony will probably have built a get out of jail free card for themselves into the contract is the brands 8th album dies on it's arse.

I predict they will release the Album during Xfactor. However everyone under Sony seems to flop. Only people that haven't flopped are Leona and Olly Murs.
Well, the current plan is to release Freedom with June/July promotion, then release the single #2 in Sep/Oct with the album following in October too, so you're right, Lee!

Ke$ha? Beyoncé? Kelly Clarkson? Alexandra Burke?

Do you even know who's signed to Sony?

Nope, I really must do my research! But I wouldn't count Alexandra Burke as a sucess yet tbh! I didin't know Beyonce was on Simon's label I thought they had a massive disagreement? Anyway I think this is brilliant news for Sugababes. I would have loved The Saturdays to move to Sony.

You are confusing Syco with Sony. Syco is an sublabel of Sony that is used for his X Factor stuff, the Babes won't be on that lablel. Most likely another Sony sublablel like Columbia or RCA.

So, it's confirmed:

I think they had been in the final stages of negotiations before, hence no official news, announcements etc.

Ahhh, this is all so muddling and confusing. I am looking forward to their new material, where ever it ends up coming from (which given the current state of affairs will be through Crown management, possibly distributed through Sony?)

I don't know any other band that has had so much drama and line-up changes and fall-outs and goodness knows what else
