June 4, 201114 yr Author Something just came to my mind about the property of the name...assuming that Island owns it, how could 2.0 sign that they lend the brand to Island, when there was already a product under the name of Sugababes (One Touch) in the market? In that case, did they sign that the incomes from Warner selling their product was now going to Island? I thought that thinking that 4.0 should then pay to Island for using the name, but I realized there's already a product on sale with the name of the band (I bought my OT copy just a year ago) that it's been selling all these years. Or, maybe when Keisha, Mutya and Heidi went to Island they signed that the name would go along with them? And 4.0 wouldn't need to pay because Heidi owns a third of the brand? Although Mutya wasn't comfortable at all with Heidi at the beginning, because she thought she didn't had fought as hard as them to get success. I doubt Mutya would've signed to share the name with her. But then, she was a kid back then, she would've signed whatever her parents would've told her to sign.
June 4, 201114 yr Really hope there's some sort of announcement tomorrow I really need some news. I'm getting withdrawal symptoms already
June 5, 201114 yr Sugababes sign with Sony on new album deal by Dean Piper, Sunday Mirror 5/06/2011 I HAVE great news for fans of Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen – Sugababes have just signed a huge new three-album deal with Sony, after moving on from their old stable, Universal. The ladies, who have had six UK No1 singles, now have a new one, Freedom, lined up for release. “The Sugababes are far from over,” says my mole. “Sony are very excited about the new material and are putting a lot of money into the new album. “Freedom has been picked as the theme tune for a Nokia campaign too. There’s even talk about them going to the States with this record too.” The ’Babes are clearly back! Isn't Dean Piper friends with Heidi? If he is, I think it's confirmed...? LOL @ Sony's big investment though. But we shall wait and see. Another confusing thing for me is why they always mention Sony? I think all their artists are signed via Sony's divisions? Which probably means that the 'Sony / Crown' thing is true.
June 5, 201114 yr Three album deal  . No offense, you all know I love the Sugababes but what label would be stupid enough to sign them for THREE albums. Anyway, I do think this could be a good move.. a fresh start. EDIT : I just went over to popjustice for a quick look and someone there said that Sony doesn't do physical CD singles. That must suck for some of you who are big Sugababe collectors. Isn't harder to get a no1 without physical release? Edited June 5, 201114 yr by XXXO
June 5, 201114 yr Glad to see we've got a bit of 'confirmation', even though it's still not official confirmation. They've been signed for three albums already though? We don't even know how this era could go! EDIT : I just went over to popjustice for a quick look and someone there said that Sony doesn't do physical CD singles. That must suck for some of you who are big Sugababe collectors. Isn't harder to get a no1 without physical release? Oh great. :( The physical release would hardly affect it's chart position at all now though, downloads are the main percentage of the singles chart.
June 5, 201114 yr Signing a deal for several albums is a common thing, even if the artist isn't very promising. It just warrants that Sugababes can't release an album not on Sony before finishing this deal. And don't JLS have physical singles? And they are on Sony / Epic...
June 5, 201114 yr From Digital Spy: The Sugababes have reportedly signed a new three-album deal with Sony. The band, currently comprising Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen, moved to the record company from their old label Universal. A source told the Sunday Mirror: "The Suga babes are far from over. Sony are very excited about the new material and are putting a lot of money into the new album. "[New single]'Freedom' has been picked as the theme tune for a Nokia campaign too. There's even talk about them going to the States with this record too." The Sugababes recently revealed that they will be playing the Chester Rocks music festival on Saturday July 2. Hear a snippet of new single 'Freedom' below:
June 5, 201114 yr Author Isn't harder to get a no1 without physical release? Physical releases are important when you have a fanbase, and checking 4.0 sales, they don't have anything relevant at this moment.
June 5, 201114 yr Everyone should be buzzing at this news. It shows that someone has faith in them somewherre... Also means we'll probably get an X Factor performance too.
June 5, 201114 yr Syco IS part of Sony, and basically if you're a Sony act it's far easier for you to get that demanded slot.
June 5, 201114 yr Author Everyone should be buzzing at this news. It shows that someone has faith in them somewherre... Also means we'll probably get an X Factor performance too. But it also shows that someone lost its faith on them  someone that's been a decade working with them, seen them in their highs and lows and didn't see any good reason to continue. All in all, they probably will feel much less pressure for this project. Sony won't have much expectations with the album given they won't be investing too much in the prodution process. June 5, 201114 yr They got the three album deal on the brandname alone. Sugababes is still a big brandname in European Pop Music and they have spent 9 years as Islands Cash Cow [business term meaning that they raked in the dough for them] and the goodwill attached to the brandname means that they are still a very good investment. If the material is good, then this album will sell well and Sony will have made a good deal. This should secure them an X Factor slot as being a Sony artist does make it much easier to get on the show. As they've signed to Sony UK it'll be Columbia they've signed too as they deal with the Pop acts signed to Sony in the UK.

It could be that they parted mutually, part of Islands settlement with Keisha could have involved dropping 4.0 or Crown could have pulled them away from Island to get them a fresh start as the head of Island UK is rather friendly with Keisha having been 2.0's A&R guy. The B-sides collection thing must have been the end of the girls deal with Island allowing them to both part ways without breaking a contract [or 4.0 only ever signed to Island for Sweet7] God only knows.
June 5, 201114 yr It's amazing how big the 'Babes used to be in Europe indeed. But the Dutchies haven't heard of the 'Babes ever since About You Now/Change. Those songs were the last ones to chart here. They used to have a big string of hits from Freak - AYN/Change. I don't think the Dutch public even knows Amelle. I hope this Sony deal is a very good and positive thing and that things will only go Up! from now on. They need to get back to Europe and even Australia again.

Sony is the worlds second largest label [i'm pretty sure Universal is #1 though] so they should be able to take them worldwide again, or at the very least back to Europe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Sony_Music_artists They deal with some pretty big artists like AC/DC, Beyoncé and J Lo.
June 5, 201114 yr Author If the material is good, then this album will sell well and Sony will have made a good deal. The thing is, Island didn't think the material was good, so they preferred to stop making business with them. Although labels are not always right. Amelle retweeted this: deanpiper Very excited about the Sugababes signing the new deal with Sony. Hearing the album is slick and big. YES! Just two hours ago (this girl tweets a lot!). So it must be true.

Hah did you just add Sugababes in there :P? I saw some other artists I liked in there too I didn't even know Sony was that big :o , I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to record companies/labels/management and all that sort of stuff.
