June 4, 201114 yr I'd like to hope that BJ can be discerning with their Rihanna looning, I remain confident that it wouldn't! I thought it was awful, a really cheap sounding 'flop' song and I thought it would definitely signal the end of her career and leave her as a one hit wonder like Lumidee two years before her. #11 was a bit higher than I expected for it though. And then of course SOS happened and it was up all the way from there... Not quite up all the way - you're forgetting the utter non-event of a song that was We Ride  Hmm, I'm not quite sure if I expected her to just disappear. Lumidee was a very obvious one-hit wonder as she was cashing in on a trend (dancehall) that became yesterday's news VERY quickly. So it was quite obvious that the likes of her and Kevin Lyttle would fail with their next singles, like Wayne Wonder had already done a couple of months before. I definitely wouldn't have expected her to become the massive star she is now back then, but I probably would have predicted more of a Ciara-like career with average success and the odd hit. But yes, considering If It's Lovin' That You Want was basically a massive flop everywhere she did well to move on quickly and turn it around, even if it was with the help of that old trick of using a famous/classic song as a sample :drama:

Lumidee could have easily reignited her career by working with relevant producers, just as Rihanna wouldn't have gone anywhere if she hadn't teamed up with decent producers/management. Yes, I can see what you mean - I wouldn't have expected her to have much more success than the likes of Ciara, Amerie and Christina Milian either, even after the success of SOS and Unfaithful, when it looked as if she might be the new Sash! with all of the #2's. Rachel Stevens did the same to a far lesser extent with Some Girls re-igniting her career for a couple of years in the UK at least after it looked to have been written off with Funky Dory!

Considering how well-managed she seems to be these days, it's shocking that somebody on her team thought back then that such a tedious bore of a song would take off anywhere. Mediocre beat, dull production, and the most unbelievably drab vocal - "we riiiiide - zzz!" True enough about Lumidee. She probably could have turned it around if she managed to dust herself off and come back strong in 2004 like Rihanna did in 2006, but the longer she left it the further and further she got pushed down in the box of stuff tagged "2003" - now it's definitely way too late for her, I think. Although I notice she had a minor hit with Pitbull in 2007 - so ahead of her time working with him now that he's the rent-a-rapper of choice! Yeah, Funky Dory flopping was a bit of a :o at the time. Although I seem to recall they released it very close to Christmas which I always maintain is often an awful decision when you're just trying to launch your (solo) career as back in those days it was inevitable you'd get lost - not so much now that Xmas time is dead thanks to the X Factor though. I recall Enrique Iglesias in 1999, Emma Bunton in 2001 and Holly Valance in 2002 also made that stupid move. Edited June 4, 201114 yr by superbossanova

I recall Enrique Iglesias in 1999, Emma Bunton in 2001 and Holly Valance in 2002 also made that stupid move. Indeed. Wasn't there a song on that album with Sean Paul which would have been a FAR better choice, I don't remember what it was called. Definitely, US urban and pop acts seem to have a lot more scope to shake off their one hit wonder tags than anybody else, all they need is to work with an 'in' producer and get radio support and voila. Lumidee I feel *could* worm her way back in somehow, but only perhaps as a guest on somebody else's song first - Pitbull, Afrojack, Ne-Yo and Lumidee would have made no difference to the song being a #1 smash than if Nayer wasn't on it. I know what you mean about the xmas period being a terrible time to release for artists like that. That said, Funky Dory was pretty crap next to Sweet Dreams My LA Ex  I still expected it to scrape the low top ten though!

June 4, 201114 yr slightly random that we're starting in 2006 but OK then  for a year as good as 2006, this list really doesn't reflect it, the number 1s were much better: +15 Embrace – Nature’s Law (I agree that this is very underrated, a great song from them  ) +12 Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Dani California (great song from them, although not their best +10 The Killers – When You Were Young (one of their weakest songs, it says a lot that I still really like it) +8 Rihanna – Unfaithful (imo, this is one of Rihanna's best ever songs) +6 Infernal- From Paris To Berlin +5 Cascada – Everytime We Touch +4 U2 & Green Day – The Saints Are Coming +3 Corinne Bailey Rae – Put Your Records On +2 Rihanna – S.O.S +1 Mary J Bilge & U2 – One (the original is so much better though..) -2 Pussycat Dolls feat will.i.am – Beep (utter trash, please control your looning BJ and don't put this through :( ) Edited June 4, 201114 yr by chart wizard

June 4, 201114 yr Author I'm not sure if Daniel's already counted my vote! I've just got round to counting votes now. But I won't count your votes until tomorrow if you really want to edit :) Don't be afraid to edit ten minutes after you initially post, because chances are I'm not counting votes at that very second.

June 4, 201114 yr :puke2: Oh my god!!!!!! I knew this would be bad but this list is truly awful. Hope we are starting with the worst year! What is amusing is the "we must give -2 to Cliff because it's Cliff" brigade. '21st Century Christmas' was awful, granted but 'Move It' is a great oldie. As is always the case, even with the actual charts, it is the artist that the public buy not that actual song. Brainwashing at it's best. +15 U2 & Green Day – The Saints Are Coming Not as good as the Skids original but not alot to beat here. +12 The Killers – When You Were Young +10 Rihanna – S.O.S +8 Red Hot Chilli Peppers – Dani California +6 Cliff Richard – 21st Century Christmas/Move It +5 Pussycat Dolls feat will.i.am – Beep +4 Embrace – Nature’s Law +3 Booty Luv – Boogie 2nite +2 Justin Timberlake feat. When it comes to AA-sides there's always one track that's promoted and played way more than the other and in this case it was definitely 21st Century Christmas, so that's the one people remember. Besides, it's very awkward voting on AA-sides on this game - I mean, what if you loved one and hated the other, do you drag the other one way down because of that? You probably wouldn't, so it's not surprising people tend to focus on one song on it (usually the more famous/notable one). And if people bought it for the song rather than the artist, than Cliff wouldn't even be in this game. Fact :P

I probably would have had Cliff a couple of places higher at least if it was just 'Move It' but the Christmas song dragged it back down. As for some not knowing a track then surely if you participate in a rating game such as this you should make yourself aware of all the songs. I couldn't remember a few of this bad bunch of No 2's so had a quick listen to remind me, admittedly wish I hadn't bothered another part of my life I won't get back! (obviously the reason I'd chosen to forget). And yes you are correct if it wasn't Cliff and Christmas the song wouldn't even had made it into this game. Always find it amusing that some people talk about chart music so passionately but yet have no knowledge, and do not want to have any knowledge, of songs from before they were born. Too me all music is timeless. Yes it can define a period but the year it was made makes no difference to whether I should like it or not.
