57. Atomic Kitten - Eternal Flame

Personal chart top 5 run: 1-1-1-1-2-2-5

This is the part where I hang my head in shame again. Following their unexpectedly massive hit Whole Again, Atomic Kitten were now a force to be reckoned with - no longer a cheap floptastic girlband, the Liverpudlian trio were now hot property. For their next move, they covered The Bangles' former #1 hit Eternal Flame and gave it an early 00s pop sheen makeover, just as they did with The Tide Is High a year later. The formula was successful for them as they were both big chart toppers. I absolutely love their rendition of this song, and I still hold two of AK's albums - Right Now and Ladies Night - in higher regard than ANY album ever put out by either Girls Aloud or Sugababes. One of those acts is still to come on this countdown but despite many people seeing Atomic Kitten as bland and personality free, for some reason I completely loved them - although strictly post Kerry. I'm not sure if this had more to do with the fact that I disliked Kerry or the fact that Jenny Frost had been in my former favourite girlband, Eurovision act Precious...

56. Alexander Rybak - Fairytale

Personal chart top 5 run: 5-OUT-1-3-OUT-3-OUT-5-OUT-3-1-2

After a brilliant and deserved top five result in Eurovision 2008, I tuned into Norway's Melodi Grand Prix with interest. The first two semi finals went by with some really great pop songs, the ultimate highlight being Silas' favourite and later BJSC entry Tone Damli Aaberge's Butterflies. But then the third semi final and it became quite clear that Alexander Rybak's mix of contemporary pop and violin was the one to watch. It went to the final and finished with seven times more votes than runner up Tone. From that moment on, casting aside what a lot of critics were saying about the West not being able to win Eurovision anymore due to political voting, there was absolutely no doubt in my mind that this was the 2009 winner for Norway. It did of course win, and by a mammoth landslide over another Silas fave, Iceland's Yohanna, and it was SO popular that it even managed to crack the UK top ten. If that isn't a seal of approval for a foreign Eurovision winner then I don't know what is! That very odd chart run comes from it topping my chart in January 2009 and dipping in and out before returning following its ESC win.

Im not sure about Atomic Kitten hun! Eternal Flame is OK but I prefer whole again

55. Aurora feat Naimee Coleman - Ordinary World

Personal chart top 5 run: 2-4-1-2-5

2000 really was unbeatable for dance. This single was released on the very same day as another which is yet to come, I recall buying them both together. A pop/trance cover of a Duran Duran single from 7 years previous, UK dance act Aurora and Irish singer Naimee's take on the song breathed new life into it. Love!

54. KT Tunstall - Other Side Of The World

Personal chart top 5 run: 1-2-3-5-5-OUT-3-OUT-5-OUT-3-4

Scottish singer Katie Tunstall was a name I'd come to recognise by late 2004, mainly due to Black Horse & The Cherry Tree. Early into 2005 and she still hadn't particularly broken through - I noticed her album on a listening stand in a music shop and the opening bars of this song were enough to convince me to buy it! Eye To The Telescope swiftly became a favourite of mine and during the year it lived up to its huge potential and became a million seller. I saw her live a few months before she blew up and she was excellent - there was a real buzz around her, a feeling that she was 'the next big thing'. Other Side Of The World is really gorgeous and it's quite criminal that she never managed to reach the UK top ten with it or the almost as great follow up Suddenly I See.

Oh, this one. I've recently discovered it, and it's brilliant. I thought it had been forgotten over the original. Love!

53. Eiffel 65 - Blue (Da Ba Dee)

Personal chart top 5 run: 1-2-2-1-1-3-4-OUT-2

Anyone for cheese? To be fair, as novelty pop songs go Blue (Da Ba Dee) was a lot darker lyrically than the likes of 2 Times and Sweet Like Chocolate. I got hold of this single on import for about £6 in summer 1999, which was a lot of money for a 12 year old! I think said import even took the song into the UK top 40 before the offical release! I just loved this song so much and still do. In fact, Eiffel 65 in general I became rather a fan of for at least a year afterwards, although I'm well aware that I'm not their biggest fan on BuzzJack, Tom Kay apparently had an Eiffel 65 fansite :o A brilliant million seller!

this was the first record I ever heard, I was 6 :o I always loved it, but I never used to know what it was saying, I at first thought it was 'Appledeer, Appledine'

KT Tunstall  Not keen on Blue though

More 2000 dance now! I can't remember how I heard this exactly, I have a feeling I recorded it off the radio (old skool!) circa November that year. It got a UK release in 2001 but limped in and back out again after a week at #27, I was very sad. Whenever anybody tells me that dance is a cold genre, I direct them to this song. If trance can be warm then this is one of the very best examples of that.

51. Tove Styrke - White Light Moment

Personal chart top 5 run: 3-2-3-2-3-1-1-1-2-3

And now to something very recent to close off the first 50 of life enhancing moments. Tove Styrke was a contestant on Sweden's Idol competition who finished 3rd in 2009 (?). Her debut single Million Pieces was very quirky beat laden pop and I liked it a lot but she had FAR better to come. White Light Moment was one of those instant 'wow' moments for me, somebody clearly had a white light moment of their own when conceiving this song. Tove's charming voice on top of a Robyn-esque dreamy electro beat, it has a very 'wintery' feel and I can remember this soundtracking many days driving through the snow to work at the back end of last year! To say it's simply stunning would be downplaying how much I love it, why can't our X Factor rejects come out with songs like this? I recently found out that it's one of the five most played tracks on Swedish radio so far this year, I'm so jealous!

It still gets better with every single listen. A late entry that just missed out on my top fifty of last year, but would easily be in my top twenty (if not higher) by now...

I was disgusted when it missed your top 50 of last year, in fact I voiced my disgust in your EOY thread  It's definitely the best BJSC winner that never was, although I'd bet good money on Kingdom of Shadow entering it to XXXVIII or something and it limping in 15th because everyone's long over it :(

Well out of those Corrs tracks; one is of course UTTERLY WONDROUS (see the CD Swap thread), and one really isn't; Summer Sunshine was the epitome of the Corrs at their worst; lightweight, cheap and without any substance whatsoever.

As I recall! It wasn't really helped by the fact that my EOY was composed literally the week after I first heard it

I could actually see it as an unjust KoS entry as well :( I couldn't help but groan in real life when he entered Are You Leaving if only because I'd thought against entering it as I thought everyone would be over it/already know it...two contests before!

54. KT Tunstall - Other Side Of The World

Other Side Of The World is really gorgeous and it's quite criminal that she never managed to reach the UK top ten with it or the almost as great follow up Suddenly I See.

You'd never know that she never had a single top ten hit if you didn't follow the charts going by her absolute airplay domination in the middle of the decade!

50. Delta Goodrem - Not Me, Not I

Personal chart top 5 run: 1-1-1-1-1-1-2-3

It stands to reason that my all time favourite album should provide a few of the entries in my all time top 100 favourite songs, and indeed no less than four songs from Innocent Eyes are in my top 50. Kicking off with Not Me, Not I. Delta's 4th UK single, the dark video was bravely filmed just before she had to start chemotherapy for her cancer. Another #1 in Australia, it was a top 20 hit here, and an absolutely gorgeous one at that. Co-written by Delta with some nobody called Gary Barlow, the string laden piano epic was later ripped off by Lucie Silvas on What You're Made Of - who got a top ten hit out of hers!

49. ATC - Around The World (La La La La La)

Personal chart top 5 run: 1-OUT-3-2-1-1-1-1-1-5-3

Onto a European #1 single from 2000, it finally got a UK release in 2002 with a subtle production polish and went top 15. The band hailed from the UK, Italy, Australia and New Zealand iirc but they were based in Germany. Anyway, there's a long story that I went into in some other thread recently about me ending up performing this song as a GCSE coursework piece! So I listened to it hundreds of times to learn it and it became rather ingrained in my consciousness. I can't really explain WHY I love it so much, I just do.
