I started thinking about this topic in direct response to vidcapper's question. Has there ever been an album you have refused to buy due to the choice of 'debut' single? If so, what album and how many singles did it take before you finally purchased the album?

I had this problem when considering buying 'The Beginning' by the Black Eyed Peas. As soon as they released their previous albums after the first single, i would buy the album straight away (From Elephunk onwards). Somehow, this time i found the debut single 'The Time (Dirty Bit)' a little difficult to get into as i was a fan of the song it sampled. But, after hearing further singles 'Just can't get enough' and the new single 'Don't stop the party', i am now more inclined to get the album.

Opinions?

I never 'avoid' buying an album if I want it. The only thing close is that I didn't buy The Sweet Escape by Gwen Stefani until after the release of the title track but that was mainly due to insufficient funds on my part back in 2007. I tend to usually like the first singles by my favourite artists so its never usually an issue.
Dirrty by Christina Aguilera put me off buying Stripped for about a month. I eventually bought it with xmas money in late December 2002 and wondered why I didn't get it earlier - stunning album. I still don't care for Dirrty though whatsoever.

Same here. What did for me was the next single 'Beautiful'

I can't recall offhand any album I've delayed buying for that reason, but there have been one or two I've held off buying because of an awful cover - Duran Duran's 'Rio' being the best example. It's was nearly two years before I bought that!

If that had come out first, I would never have bought the album - I absolutely loathed that song! :puke:

I liked Dirrty though, depite Redman's contribution - and Fighter was fantasic.

'Free Wired' by the Far East Movement. I'm hardly a fan of Like A G6 at all (although it isn't as bad now), but Rocketeer was so damn amazing that it encouraged me to buy the whole album, and I wasn't disappointed. Plenty of great club-bangers on there.

I have quite a few albums like this, The Sciript's Science and Faith (didn't like For The First Time, but liked Nothing and If You Ever Come Back), Katy B's On A Mission, (not a fan of Katy On A Mission or Lights On, but I really liked Broken Record), Bruno Mars' Doo-Wops & Hooligans (didn't like JTWYA that much, loved Grenade).

Quite often, I don't like the lead single, or think it's rather weak, second or third single is better and I buy the album, and I end up loving the rest of the album. Happens all the time for me.

I think you have to go in to it open-minded, just because you wont like the lead single doesnt mean you wont like the other material on the album. For example a recent example Run The World by Beyonce, it really isnt a good enough song for Bey, but then Best Thing You Never Had is great. (Also its Beyonce so i'd always buy the album  ).

You'd hope for variety anyway so you wouldnt expect the first single to be similar to everything on the album, but more of an insight into the sound the artist is going for. :)

I didnt like Duffy's first single from her current album, so didnt bother buying that. I think first singles from an album are important and when artists get it wrong, it can often be difficult to recover from.

I hope Dido has learned that lesson, too...

I'm with Slowdown on this one. I was put off buying Duffy's Endlessly because the lead single Well, Well, Well just didn't do anything for me. In the end I did buy the album and I'm glad I did, because it is really very, very good. Even Well, Well, Well grew on me eventually
Well, Well, Well is marmite. I loved it but I instantly could see why people would hate it. I didn't think Don't Believe In Love was a bad single choice for Dido either-there wasn't much single potential on her third album.

I think dido is just gonna release her next album with only 1 single lol. I didnt get her last album, might give it a listen.

Duffy really annoyed me with her second album. She left her management, completely changed her sound and it turn alienated her fans. Thats why i think no matter how many singles she would of released off this album, the end result would be the same. She should of stayed with the same songwriters lol

I avoided Duffy's rockferry because i hated Mercy and still do. I saw her do a set list on Glastonbury and immediately got the album plus i was in love with Warwick avenue

The Saturdays's first two singles didn't win me over. Then Issues came out and i checked the album out and it's the only truly decent album they have produced to date.

Nicki's minaj's album didn't win me over until Moment for life. Your Love was damn right awful and it took me a while to like Check It Out and Right thru me. I was very skeptical about her as a whole but i am glad my opinion changed.

I agree on the Nicki Minaj case. The first single had put me right off. Now that she's released songs like moment 4 life, right thru me and now superbass, i might actually purchase it. Not a fan of the colour pink though lol

Neither am i but i would personally suggest to check the album out. I love all genres but i never actually like hip/hop rap albums (only the singles) and Nicki's really suprised me.
Pink Friday is great. I was also put off by Massive Attack and Your Love, but Right Thru Me & Moment 4 Life made me buy the album and its amazing , I even now like the first two singles :kink:

I might be that too :D. It may make the album 'a cohesive unit' :D

I avoided Paloma faith as i jus didn't think much to Stone Cold or New york. But i had my sister actually nag me to check the album out. I am glad i did. I still listen to it almost two years later. It's a one of a kind underated album. I did eventually like Stone Cold and New york.
