Call On Me, Love Machine and American Idiot were all released on the same week? :o All classics in their respective genres!

Yeah :o This was the rest of the chart, as a reminder of what else was around at the time. Shame the rest of the top ten isn't nearly as good as the top 3.

Angel :wub: Shame it couldn't get top 10 when 4-10 on that chart are horrendous...
Annoys me that Eric Prydz (would it have ever got to #1 without the video?) beat "Love Machine" and "American Idiot". Then again, had LM beaten AI to #1 I'd have hated it even though I appreciate it now as one of Girls Aloud's finest moments.
wow, that top 3 is brilliant in 2004, although 2 and 3 are SO superior to the number 1 :( thats a good top 15, I'm glad LTWYL isn't top 10, very overrated imo
15 new entries in the chart that week :o :o :o Something unheard of these days

W/E 5 Mar 2005 had 19 new entries (although two of those were re-issues and one had previously charted on imports)

1 Nelly feat. Tim McGraw - Over And Over

3 Elvis Presley - His Latest Flame {re-issue - #1 in 1961}

4 Girls Aloud - Wake Me Up

5 Akon feat. Styles P - Locked Up {got to #61 on import 9 weeks earlier}

6 Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My God {re-issue - #66 in 2004}

8 The Futureheads - Hounds Of Love

9 Usher - Caught Up

11 Verbalicious - Don't Play Nice

13 Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell - Let's Get Blown

14 Reflekt feat. Delline Bass - Need To Feel Loved

16 Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

20 Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure

28 KT Tunstall - Black Horse & The Cherry Tree

29 Keisha White feat. Cassidy - Don't Care Who Knows

31 Charlotte Hatherley - Bastardo

33 Groove Cutters - We Close Our Eyes

35 DT8 Project feat. Andrea Britton - Winter

36 Dogs - She's Got A Reason

40 Tears For Fears - Closest Thing To Heaven

And I can recall a grand total of five of those 19 songs... :lol: (OAO, LU, OMG, HOL and ASP)

I think the reason there's so many new entries in those days might've been because the sales were so low, so fanbases could more easily get themselves in the chart. And also more songs were held back, so they spent much less time in the chart overall.

I think it's good in a way, because you get to hear a wider variety of music on the chart show and stuff. Not the same mainstream songs hanging around for 4 months like we have atm.

I only recall Nelly, Girls Aloud, Akon, Kasier Chiefs, Usher, Verbalicious, Reflekt and KT Tunstall - that's 8 out of 19 :lol: I would hate a flood of new entries like this in today's charts - quite the opposite to Eric lol

I think it would be cool if in the chart show they played the new entires in the top 75 before doing the top 40. I doubt it would happen though, since they seem reluctant to even play the top 40 in full, but it would be nice if they did I think.

I would love that too - maybe the people who listen to the T40 will hear 'new entry at 46' for the first time, like it, then the song goes T40 next week because it's more popular. Maybe Drake could have had a hit with 'Forever' if people were exposed to it like that. It was so sad to see it miss out when it's Drake's best solo song :heart: Especially as the song has sold consistently

Sadly it will never happen, it has always been the UK T40 and it's not gonna change soon

They did announce some outside-the-top-40 positions recently, when they did the rundown of all GaGa's entries in the top 200 on the week of her album's release.

But yeah, I think it would be a good idea if they did a little rundown of new entries outside the top 40. But I don't think the OCC would allow that. R1 are licensed to run the top 40, not anything outside. They weren't even allowed to indirectly show the 41+ positions from previous weeks of songs climbing into the top 40 until recently (for example they'd have to list a song climbing 42-38 as 'new entry' or 're-entry' instead of 'up 4')

15 - La Roux "In For The Kill" (2009) (+43)

La Roux did have a number one hit single in 'Bulletproof', but IFTK was a much bigger hit and has sold bucketloads more than it. On 4 consecutive weeks they fell short of number one, the competition (Calvin Harris, Tinchy Stryder feat. N Dubz) was too strong for them. La Roux were big in 2009 but after their 2 hit singles they flopped with 'I'm Not Your Toy' before disappearing.

I'm glad La Roux failed to finish in the top 10 after it got the most points in qualification by a long way. Terrible.

I assume it did so well because 2009 either had more voters, less songs or both?

4 Girls Aloud - Wake Me Up

6 Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My God {re-issue - #66 in 2004}

8 The Futureheads - Hounds Of Love

13 Snoop Dogg feat. Pharrell - Let's Get Blown

16 Idlewild - Love Steals Us From Loneliness

20 Maxïmo Park - Apply Some Pressure

28 KT Tunstall - Black Horse & The Cherry Tree

31 Charlotte Hatherley - Bastardo

If any top 40 has seen eight songs enter as good as the above I'll be shocked :wub:

Ah, the days when mainstream indie was 1) good and 2) sold

14 - The Killers "When You Were Young" (2006) (+44)

If you were asked to some songs by The Killers, this would probably not be the first on your list. But it was the highest peaking song for them in the UK, spending 2 weeks at number 2 behind the Scissor Sisters. WYWY may have peaked higher, but number 3 hit single "Human" is the biggest song for The Killers, outselling all their others by a big gap (Human is in the T40 most downloaded tracks of all time iirc, none of their other singles made the T100)

I seem to remember 2009 having a tiny amount of songs to vote for.

Deserved finish for La Roux, it's alright, but not as good as Bulletproof.

ETA: When You Were Young! :wub: Not their best, though.

I know 13 of them and bought 4 of them on single this week - Wake Me Up, Need To Feel Loved, Black Horse & The Cherry Tree and Bastardo, which is one of my favourite indie pop tracks from the mid 00s, insanely catchy and an excellent video - to the point that I bought the DVD single as well as the CD single!

13 - Kings Of Leon "Use Somebody" (2008) (+46)

"Sex On Fire" is the biggest hit for Kings Of Leon, selling over a million - but this follow up didn't do badly, selling over 800k to date and going down a modern classic. US spent thirteen non-consecutive weeks in the T10, and spent a week at number 2 behind Leona Lewis's Snow Patrol cover 'Run'. KOL were the biggest band ever in 2008, but after this song they flopped with 'Revelry' - and they only went downwards in popularity from there - with their latest album still getting number one - but they could never re-create the magic that was 'Only By The Night'.

12 - Dido "White Flag" (2003) (+47)

What were Dido's management team thinking when they released this on the same week as new hip hop group The Black Eyed Peas, who would go on to have the year's biggest seller. She might have had more chance the week before, where ELTON JOHN debuted at number one (I hear you thinking 'gosh! was he still relevant back then') and yes he was. Anyway, I don't think Dido cares about missing out a number one single, as the album 'Life For Rent' spent 10 non consecutive weeks at number one and was the "21" of the time.

11 - Kelly Rowland "Stole" (2003) (+48)

Here's another case of 'what were they thinking' when this song was in a battle with T.a.T.u (you remember that group who were famous for being Russian and lesbians?) - who would go on to spend 4 weeks at number one and, less importantly, be the most recent winner of Dannyboy's Least Favourite Singles Game. "Stole" is the closest Kelly Rowland has ever got to a solo number one, she's been there twice as a guest artist in "Dilemma" and "When Love Takes Over". In other news, Kelly Rowland will become a new judge of The X Factor this year along with Tulisa, Gary Barlow and Louis Walsh.

I wonder what happened to La Roux? Not heard much from them recently. I know Elly Jackson supposedly has a part on All Of The Lights. Wonder when they'll come back with new material, it's been a while since IFTK/Bulletproof now.

When You Were Young :wub: To be honest I would be able to name most of The Killers' singles if you asked me. They've produced so many classics in their relatively sortish career.

Disappointed but unsurprised and surprised respectively that US and WF have missed the top 10. :(
