July 25, 201113 yr The media may have just taken those not accounted for and presumed them to be dead. If you can get an accurate-sounding figure, people will look at it as being more relevant. It just 'backfired' on them when more people were found alive. That's what I suspect. To be perfectly honest, I'm just glad that less people died. From what I've read, it was truly horrific there. Oh, yeah, I mean, obviously it's a good thing that it's less people... But still, 68 slaughtered, innocent teenagers is one horrific death toll... :(

I keep thinking if there was some way that this could have been averted... And I really feel for the families of the dead, and the survivors of the attack. They must be going through hell right now.
July 25, 201113 yr Has anyone read the Norwegian press over the last couple days? Is it possible that the police did make it clear their figure was only an estimate (albeit an unusually precise one) but that detail got lost in translation? If, on the other hand, they were reporting the 84 figure without making it clear that it was an estimate, they are now left looking rather daft. I can understand that they wanted to make it clear that the initial reports (between 10 and 30) were wrong but they should have made it clear that they didn't have ab accurate figure. I'm sure most people would have understood that it was impossible to know the precise figure straight away.

All the news stations, newspapers, etc, seemed to be parroting the same figures....

They must be going through hell right now. They're going to go through hell for a long time to come. It's bad enough surviving a bomb attack on a train where random strangers near you died. Surviving something like this and seeing your friends killed must be far, far worse. It seems almost certain that some families will have lost more than one child. :(
July 25, 201113 yr I dont remember really anyone using the word "estimated" when I was watching the news.... All the news stations, newspapers, etc, seemed to be parroting the same figures.... Certainly the BBC and Sky didn't and the press didn't although I can't speak for the Express as they didn't think it merited the front page. After all, it was just a bunch of foreigners. I don't know about any foreign language broadcasters.

They must be going through hell right now. I dont really think things like this can ever really be averted, you will always have terrorists and pathetic lunatics who are willing to kill people to make some kind of point... Also the fact that certain sections of the media have been feeding the hatred of people such as this with paranoia and misinformation about immigrants and muslims... It really is absolutely incredible to me that these idiots bang on about "Islam taking over Europe", where there is not ONE Western European country that has a practicing muslim population of more than about 5%.. According to the last census, only 1.5 million of the population of UK were practicing Muslims..... How on Earth could less than 5% of the population possibly install Sharia Law...? In Norway, the amount is around 2% (as of 2007) with 78% of the country being Lutheran.... These figures make the assumptions and claims of the Right Wing completely ludicrous.....

Russia Today started off by saying "estimated 80 deaths", but then fell into line with the '84' figure....

What would become of most right-wing without the populist rhetoric and alarmist discourse? Nothing, of course. If they didn't have that, their appeal would mostly lie within the priviledged classes. So they have to adopt something to have the lower classes on their side. And that, of course, is by playing on the fact that most on the lower classes don't have enough culture and/or studies to correctly interpret things, hence the fear factor-whipping. And before someone even tries to go there, nothing in my assessement about the lower classes has anything to do with contempt, but rather with reality. And the fact is, a lot of people in those strata didn't go far enough in their studies not because they wanted to, but because circumstances in life have held them up.
July 25, 201113 yr The reason the norwegian police came out with 86 people confirmed dead from Utøya, was because they had raports that the number was this high. Also the media had a really wrong picture of the severity friday night, that "only" 10 people was confirmed dead. Anyway, other news.. the streets around in Norway is PACKED with people! In Oslo they were planning a parade today, they had to cancel because there is TO many people in the streets. July 25, 201113 yr You can always trust those Tea Party morons to come up with something offensive. Glen Beck has used his radio show to say that the Norwegian Labour Party youth camp on the island was "disturbing" because it sounded like "a little like the Hitler Youth". Apart from the fact that the Norwegian Labour Party is a democratic party and that young people can decide for themselves whether to join. And the fact that the Norwegian Labour Party does not preach hate. Oh, and that anyone can join regardless of race, religion or sexuality. Not much difference at all really is there?
July 25, 201113 yr The turnout in Norway doesn't surprise me. I spent a week traveling around the south (Oslo, Larvik, Flåm, Bergen, Stavanger) and even then you knew that the people were something special! They're so kind and they love their country, and why wouldn't they? I signed the official online book of condolences [i couldn't make it up to Dublin to sign the physical copy] because I'm a Labour Youth member here, and even though I only spent a short time in Norway I'm still in love with it. I think anybody who visits Norway will always have a piece of it with them. It's an amazing place. The Tea Party need to be taken down a few notches. I'm sure they'd have no problem having Tea Party camps, but because Norway is "socialist" there has to be an ulterior motive! :nocheer: They kind of forget that Hitler was far-right, just like them. They really are stupid. EDIT: I can't spell "ulterior" ;o Edited July 25, 201113 yr by Cal

After all, his second name is HOSSEIN! :P

July 25, 201113 yr And, of course, he was born in Kenya. Because the man who holds the record for most bankruptcies and wears a fox on his head said so.

July 26, 201113 yr Errr Grimly mate - 2 Al Qaeda splinter groups took responsibility for the attacks on Friday night, when the tabloids printed their headlines, only Al Qaeda had claimed responsibility - it was only when N.Police cleared it up on Sat morning. You could say they should read and confirm sources before printing, but they wrote what they saw on F.night.

You could say they should read and confirm sources before printing, but they wrote what they saw on F.night. It was fairly evident from the start that the shootings on the island had nothing to do with Al Qaeda. By Friday evening Breivik had been arrested. The first editions of the tabloids generally go to press later than the broadsheets. However, the Sun was still saying it was an AQ attack but all the other papers (apart from the Express and the Mail which didn't bother reporting it on the front page at all) were more cautious.
