We drew with NORTH KOREA? I hear we were going to be an embarassment but that's taking it too far... I assumed all NK's players would be in the army?

I would guess North Korea would be closer to full strength. The best English players will be back with their clubs.

Is anyone from the England squad even decent ?

The only player I know is Michael NGoo & I personally don't rate him very highly

Yep. I know that Liverpool pulled out two players, so they could be involved with pre-season

Odd time to have a tournament

Matt Phillips played a lot for Blackpool last season, although a lot was from the bench. Him, Nathan Baker and Ben Gordon are very good players. I'd be surprised if they weren't in the next under 21s squad to replace those that are now too old.

Henry Winter, the Telegraph journalist, reckons there are at least 35 players 'missing' from the England squad. :|

So England are through without scoring a goal. Doesn't it make you proud?

That's one of the biggest flaws with the 24-team format. Italy did something similar in the World Cup when it was 24 teams. I think they may even have gone on to win it that year (or at least reach the final).

You must be talking about the 1982 World Cup. But back then, there was a second group stage. Italy managed to scrape through round 1 with 3 ties but then went on to beat France and Brazil in the second group stage, and then move on until winning the final against West Germany.

The last 16 knock-up rounds only began in the 1986, therefore also qualifying the four best third-placed teams, and it went on until the World Cup was enlarged to 32 teams in 1998. The U-20 World Cup has used the 24 team format since 1997 and the U-17 World Cup since 2007. The Euro championships ares due to adopt the same format starting in 2016.

That's the one. Italy did score in the first round but they didn't win any games.

I know the Euros are about to expand to 24 teams. That was one reason why I made the point about a team being able to get through the first stage without scoring a goal in a 24 team tournament. That is a ridiculous format. 20 teams is just about workable. You have four groups of five and the lowest ranked team in each group misses out on the final set of matches on the assumption that they will have been eliminated by then. There is no satisfactory way of organising a 24 team event.
