August 8, 201113 yr That's the one. Italy did score in the first round but they didn't win any games. I know the Euros are about to expand to 24 teams. That was one reason why I made the point about a team being able to get through the first stage without scoring a goal in a 24 team tournament. That is a ridiculous format. 20 teams is just about workable. You have four groups of five and the lowest ranked team in each group misses out on the final set of matches on the assumption that they will have been eliminated by then. There is no satisfactory way of organising a 24 team event. Except possibly eight groups of three with only the winner advancing to the quarters. That's a rather short tournament though, only as many games as a 16 team event.
August 10, 201113 yr Except possibly eight groups of three with only the winner advancing to the quarters. That's a rather short tournament though, only as many games as a 16 team event. Which, of course, is why it won't happen. It also provides too great a risk of teams being level on points, goal difference etc. as well as matches where both teams only require a draw to go through.
August 10, 201113 yr Or you could go the other way, with 4 groups of 6 with the top 2/4 qualifying, but then that will probably have too many games, either 8 or 9, which is more than a 32 team World Cup.
