July 27, 201113 yr People are seriously getting their 'favourite artist' mixed up with 'influential artist'. Despite me going off them lately - Take That are still one of my favourite acts but no way on God's Green Earth have they been influential or made any impact on the music world. Sure - they may have wanted a thousand boys to be in a boyband like them (but they're only interested in the fame and the benefits of fame rather than music.) I mean - people may as well start referencing Mr Blobby - he's just as deserving of a place in any list as Cheryl Cole is. In fact - that is my start: Mr Blobby. Kath
July 27, 201113 yr Taio Cruz could be argued as slightly influential because of being one of the first to the whole 'electro-club-banger' thing back in 2007 (Come On Girl) but he's hardly up there with Madonna, Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse or Britney Spears...
July 27, 201113 yr Most of the people I'd have said have been mentioned already but one I have not seen is Alanis Morissette. I personally think she has influenced other females in that genre like Avril Lavigne, Pink, Meredith Brooks Kelly Clarkson etc. There is also a distinct Alani sound to Kylie's Impossible Princess album :P Edited July 27, 201113 yr by Regina
July 27, 201113 yr People are seriously getting their 'favourite artist' mixed up with 'influential artist'. It might not be directed at me. But in my case, I assure you I'm not. Because Daft Punk truly is that influential. The sonic trappings of most of the current electro/dance-pop landscape bear more than a passing influence from what Messrs. Bangalter and Homem-Christo developed in both Homework and especially Discovery. Anyone who doesn't hear it seriously needs to acquire some musical culture that goes a bit beyond what's on top of the charts. And Beck too, yes. The way he brought together disparate styles and meld them so seamlessly into a solid sonic pout-pourri has been omnipresent in pop music since the late 90's. Gorillaz, Gnarls Barkley (and Cee-Lo, of course) and OutKast are some of the people who wouldn't be where they were/are today without Beck's contributions. And seeing that some of the latter artists mentioned also brought an influence to some of the current music in the charts (OutKast/B.o.B, anyone?), it's fair to say that I'm not clutching at straws here.
July 27, 201113 yr Just LOL at 90% of the artists being mentioned in this thread. Can I just add, if we're considering artists who have been influential within the last 20 years, then I would just ignore Michael Jackson immediately.
July 27, 201113 yr Adele Cheryl Cole Kelly Osborne Justin Beiber James Blunt Not questioning your judgement or anything but I don't see how these are really influential. Adele and Cheryl are 2 of my favourite artists but I don't see them as influential. Adele was just influenced by Amy Winehouse, and she hasn't really done a lot to push another wave of the soul revival of 2008, but she has done very well this year, and good on her for it. Cheryl was influential as part of GA but not as a soloist imo. Kelly Osbourne's debut album was critically panned, and while her 2nd was quite well received it flopped and also she's just another 'reality star going to singing just to try everything they can'. Justin Bieber is just Usher-lite, but nowhere near as talented (all the parodies and hate shows that). I won't say he's too new as I nominated Gaga but really he's not put anything groundbreaking out. James Blunt is awful, and he just had an inexplicable megahit.
July 27, 201113 yr I am no real expert on it but I don't knwo of any female singers doing the angry rock type music before You're right, you are no real expert.
July 27, 201113 yr Loves ya too Joshy Woshy babes  :manson: Nothing against you or Alanis, but she just isn't influential at all. She's hardly up there with the likes of female singers such as Janis Joplin & Ann Wilson.
July 27, 201113 yr :manson: Nothing against you or Alanis, but she just isn't influential at all. She's hardly up there with the likes of female singers such as Janis Joplin & Ann Wilson. Well I agree there, but in the mid 90's she was pretty huge and must have been at least a little bit of an influence to some people.
July 27, 201113 yr Most of the people I'd have said have been mentioned already but one I have not seen is Alanis Morissette. I am no real expert on it but I don't knwo of any female singers doing the angry rock type music before she came out with Jagged Little Pill (Tere was Sheryl Crow I guess) Gee, on top of my head, I can think of: Janis Joplin Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart) Patti Smith The Runaways (and Joan Jett and Lita Ford afterwards) Hole Babes In Toyland L7 Bikini Kill
July 27, 201113 yr Just LOL at 90% of the artists being mentioned in this thread. Can I just add, if we're considering artists who have been influential within the last 20 years, then I would just ignore Michael Jackson immediately. True and not true as most people seem to be mixing up popular with influential-Cheryl Cole may be popular but she has influenced zero artists or other acts. Michael Jackson easily remains a huge influence on RnB and pop acts because there would be no Chris Brown, Usher, Trey Songz, Beyonce who all have mentioned him as being there greatest pop role model and the one who has influenced them the most. Equally the same for Madonna she may not have set the charts alight but there is no female singer of the younger generation from Gaga, Britney, Kesha who has not been influenced by her. I would also add the women who in the nineties broke the mould for female singers and was doing what Adele, Amy, Jill Scott, Marsha Ambrosious went on to do and that was Lauryn Hill. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill had a huge influence on upcoming female singers in many genres and set a very high standard. I think there are not as many groundbreaking, influential acts around at the moment but Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lauryn Hill all stand out.
July 27, 201113 yr Gee, on top of my head, I can think of: Janis Joplin Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane) Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart) Patti Smith The Runaways (and Joan Jett and Lita Ford afterwards) Hole Babes In Toyland L7 Bikini Kill Yeah alright, I get the picture. In my defense, I was aware of and a fan of Alanis long before I had heard of those other acts. Thats why she came to mind when I saw this topic. Edited July 27, 201113 yr by Regina
July 27, 201113 yr It might not be directed at me. But in my case, I assure you I'm not. Because Daft Punk truly is that influential. I certainly wasn't directing my post at you Jax. Of those that have posted - your list was quite credible (if a bit on the short side! ) I'm talking the likes of Leona Lewis, Take That, Robbie Williams, Cheryl Cole, etc, etc being influential. They may certainly be favourite artists and indeed good performers. Influential? Definitely not. Even the excellent Adele can't be quoted as being influential as she's been influenced herself by Amy Winehouse - who I'm quite certain appears to have been influenced herself by artists 20/30 years (even more) prior. July 27, 201113 yr Why is everyone arguing over Alanis Morrisette when KELLY OSBOURNE is being described as influential?
July 27, 201113 yr Unfortunately, for every one influential artist, there are 20 generic bandwagon jumpers. :(
