Singles

Adele spends a seventh week at No.1 with “Someone like you”, now the second longest running No.1 of this decade, behind the ten week running of “Party Rock Anthem” for LMFAO (TW-4). And as her album “21” notches up another week at the top of the ARIA Albums Chart, it means she’s held the top of both charts for seven weeks, and it’s been over fourteen years since once act dominated both charts for this long. Savage Garden’s self-titled album and the single “Truly, Madly, Deeply” both held top honors for eight weeks from the start of April to the end of May back in 1997. Adele also retains her second Top 10 single “Rolling in the Deep”, which moves back up a place to No.6 this week, plus she holds up the other end of the Top 50 with “Set Fire to the Rain” dropping a place to No.50 this week.

The next possible No.1 single in Australia could be “Moves like Jagger” for Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera, which holds at No.2 for a second week, and also holding within the Top 5 at No.4 is “Party Rock Anthem” for LMFAO, which is spending its eighteen week within the Top 10. The last song to spend this amount of time within the Top 10 was The Black Eyed Peas track “I Gotta Feeling” (HP1, June 2009) which went on to spend a total of 21 weeks in the Top 10 (btw, the record is 24 weeks). By spending its eighteen week in the Top 10 though, LMFAO jump up to equal ninth longest running Top 10 in ARIA history (1988 to 2011). The only changes within the Top 5 this week are the swap around for No.3 and No.5, with Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know” climbing two places to a new peak of No.3, and former No.2 single “Jar of Hearts” for Christina Perri is down two places to five.

Nicki Minaj scores a new peak of No.7 with her “Super Bass”, and right behind her at No.8 is Nicole Scherzinger, who leaps up five places to No.8 with her first Top 10 SOLO entry “Right Here” (although she was here late last year as guest vocalist on Enrique’s “Heartbeat” {HP-5, Nov 2010}). Of the fifteen artists within the Top 10 this week, ten of those are female performers, and another one of those is at No.9, Lady GaGa with “The Edge of Glory”, which drops three places this week. The second new Top 10 entrant this week is Jessica Mauboy who leaps up ten places to No.10 with her new single “Inescapable”, which she performed this past week on the Grand Final of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’, and it becomes her fifth Top 10 hit from ten released singles.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: LMFAO re-peaks at No.11 with “Champagne Showers” (peaked 11-July-2011), but the only new peaking track within the Top 20 is Pitbull and Marc Anthony on “Rain Over Me”, which is up seven places to No.17, helped by his recent tour with Enrique no doubt. These Kids Wear Crowns are up four places to No.25 with their first hit here “Jumpstart”, whilst Benny Benassi makes his biggest jump ever within the Top 50, as “Cinema” leaps ten places this week to land at No.28. Right behind him is Aloe Blacc who is up eight places to No.29 with his hit “I Need a Dollar”.

Britney re-peaks at No.31 with her latest track “I Wanna Go”, but leaping back into the Top 50 at No.32 (up nineteen places from No.51) is Alexandra Stan and her track “Mr. Saxobeat”. Snoop Dogg is up four places to crack the Top 40 at No.40 with his Yazoo-infused track “Boom”, and scoring the biggest Top 100 jump of the week is Demi Lovato and her new single “Skyscraper”, which rockets up forty-seven places to No.45, and instantly becomes her highest charting track, beating the No.46 she debuted and peaked at with the single “This is Me” featuring Joe Jonas.

‘Australia’s Got Talent’ not only helped Jessica Mauboy to a fifth Top 10 single this week, it also gave the competition’s winner an instant hit and the highest new entry of the week. Jack Vidgen is a fourteen year old from Sydney and after winning Tuesday’s grand final debut several days later with his self-penned track “Yes I Am” which debts at No.35. His debut album is due out in a couple of weeks (August 19th).

The other Top 50 debut this week is the fifth single from Rihanna’s “Loud” album (TW-29), coming in at No.46 is “Cheers (Drink to That)”, which features an interpolation of Avril Lavigne’s “I’m With You”. This is one of five songs she appears on in this weeks Top 100, her most recent single “California King Bed” drops out of the Top 50 this week to No.51, former No.1’s “S&M” and “Love the Way You Lie” are sitting at No.71 and No.84 respectively, and her other guest appearance is on Kanye West’s “All of the Lights” which re-enters at No.95 this week. Her former No.1 “Only Girl (in the World)” drops out from No.100 after 45 weeks within the Top 100.

Lower 50: Six songs score new peaks in the lower half of the Top 100 this week. Selena Gomez & the Scene are up five places to No.54 with their new track “Love You Like a Love Song”. Up eleven places to No.58 are Eskimo Joe with their new track “Love is a Drug”, and two more local acts are just behind them, with S.mouse up nine places to No.61 with his second single “Squashed N***a”, and Shannon Noll leaps up thirty places to No.65 with new song “Switch Me on”. Mann and his new version of “The Mack” climb a place to No.67, and re-entering at No.80 and scoring a new peak is current tourist (via Splendor in the Grass) Foster the People, and their track “Pumped Up Kicks” is back in at No.80.

Next week Jay-Z and Kanye West release their collaboration album “Watch the Throne”, and the first single from that album debuts at No.64 this week entitled “Otis”. The song features sampled vocals from Otis Redding and his version of “Try a Little Tenderness”. The single has hit No.12 in the U.S. and the Top 40 in Canada. Another teaming also debuts at No.68, Marvin Priest and Wynter Gordon on his new single “Take Me Away”. It becomes Marvin’s second charting single, and Wynter’s fourth chart appearance.

Lady Antebellum are due to release their third album entitled “Own the Night” in mid-September, and the first single to be lifted from that album debuts at No.72 this week entitled “Just a Kiss”. Debuting at No.77 is New Zealand folk group Avalanche City, with their first chart entry here, and a former NZ No.1 single “Love, Love, Love” (3 weeks from mid-March 2011). Also gaining their first Top 100 entry is Hot Chelle Rae, who enter at No.83 with “Tonight, Tonight”. They have previously charted on the physical singles chart with the track “I Like to Dance” (HP-21, July 2010).

Albums

In February of this year, P!nk’s “Greatest Hits… So Far” (TW-40) became only the third album in Australian Album Chart History (1965-2011) to score thirteen weeks at No.1, the other two being the soundtrack’s for “Grease” (accumulated from three No.1 runs in 1978, 1991 and 1998) and “A Man and a Woman” (1968). This week Adele’s “21” stays atop the ARIA Albums Chart for a thirteenth week to become the equal longest-running No.1 album this decade, and now the equal twenty-fourth longest running No.1 album in Australian chart history (1965-2011). Plus she regains her No.3 peak for her first album “19”, which is up one place this week.

Wedged in-between Adele at No.2 is Lady GaGa’s “Born This Way” for a third week there. And also climbing up one place is LMFAO’s “Sorry for Party Rocking”, back up to No.4 this week, but the biggest climb within the Top 10 this week is Bruno Mars’ “Doo-Wops and Hooligans”, which climbs three places to No.5 whilst spending it’s 34th week inside the Top 10, placing the album as the equal-twenty sixth longest run within the Top 10 Albums (1988-2011). The other albums which have so far racked up thirty-four weeks in the Top 10 are “Fever” for Kylie Minogue (2001), “Americana” for Offspring (1998/99), “Forgiven, Not Forgotten” by The Corrs (1996) and “Breakaway” by Kelly Clarkson (2004).

Christina Perri is up one place to No.6 with her “lovestrong” album, and last week’s major re-entry for Amy Winehouse, “Back to Black” drops back down two places to No.8 this week, whilst the highest new entry from last week, The Living End’s “The Ending is Just the Beginning Repeating” falls seven places to No.10 this week. Back into the Top 10 at No.9 is “Planet Pitbull” for Pitbull, helped no doubt by his recent tour with Enrique and his new Top 20 single “Rain Over Me”.

Scoring the highest new entry of the week, and their first Top 10 album in the process is former Perth (now Melbourne based) band The Panics who debut at No.7 with their fourth album “Rain on the Humming Wire”. Their first album failed to chart in the Top 100, but album number two “Sleeps Like a Curse” debuted and peaked at No.40 in August 2005. In October 2007 they scored their first Top 20 entry, as album three “Cruel Guards” debuted and peaked at No.18, but did spend an accumulated thirty-one weeks in the Top 100 and it scored a Gold accreditation.

NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: With the Splendour in the Grass festival on during the last weekend of July in Byron Bay, many of the acts appearing there benefit on the charts this week. The Panics score the highest new entry of the week, and up thirteen places to No.17 are Foster the People and their album “Torches”. Gotye not only scores a new peak of No.3 with his new single, but his 2006 album “Like Drawing Blood” scores a new peak by jumping thirteen places to No.19. Kanye West appeared at the festival, and his recent set “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” rebounds eighteen places to No.34, whilst local act Architecture in Helsinki benefit with a thirty-four place jump for their current set “Moment Bends”.

Hillsong Live rebound fifteen places to No.20 with their recent album “God is Able”, whilst Nicki Minaj keeps climbing with her “Pink Friday” album, it’s up seven places to a new peak of No.22. The “Winners & Losers” soundtrack is up three places to No.24, and another local TV soundtrack, “Angry Boys”, leaps thirty-nine places to No.36 this week. Two US country acts jump back up this week too, Carrie Underwood’s repackaged “Play On” is up eight places to No.28 and ahead of their new album in September, Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” has rebounded thirteen places to No.30.

Former Escape the Fate vocalist Ronnie Radke was sentenced to prison in June 2008 and released in December of 2010. His new band is called Falling in Reverse, and their debut album “The Drug in Me is You” lands at No.21 this week, which is higher than any of his former bands’ albums have achieved.

In the lower fifty of the albums chart, we see new entries from Joss Stone at No.58 with her fifth album “LP1”. Kelly Rowland’s third album “Here I Am” debuts at No.61. Blue Mountains (NSW) native hip-hop act Thundamentals debut at No.64 with their first album “Foreverlution”, and scoring their first ARIA Albums Chart appearance is Swedish electro band Little Dragon with their third album “Ritual Union” which enters at No.91.
