I remember liking Heartbeat much better than Tragedy at the time, but it's aged much worse

'Heartbeat' has never been one of my favourites, neither has 'Tragedy' to be honest, hopefully that'll make an appearance soon.
Oh good, I had a horrible feeling that might have snuck into the top 10. It's another of those song that I just cannot fathom why people like. It's so boring. The video is good though, I'll give it that.

14. You'll Be Sorry - 6.98

UK #4 - 2001

I must admit that I was shocked to see the score and finishing position of this. I'm not mad on it myself but it picked up a lot of 11's. However it also picked up a lot of 0's, general low scores and 'non song' comments thus neutralising it. The double a-side (yes, another one!) to Here And Now in mid 2001, H was responsible for the majority of this song surprisingly. Admittedly, when it turned up in Jester's NMTBJ round the other week I'd completely forgotten its existence so I think I'm firmly in the 'don't get the fuss' camp, to me it sounds like an Alcazar b-side (sorry :drama:). The harmonies are nice in places though.

It's all about the bridges for me, love the melody on them and the underlying production, Claire as always is vocally fantastic on it too. Plus I have an instant yearning for anything from the last three months of 1998

I love Better The Devil You Know :( Of course Kylie's original is better but still...

This is considerably better than "Here and Now" IMHO- which was Steps-by-numbers...

Even "Tell Me ma" ?

Ok, maybe not everything  Although I still hear that terror when I'm out surprisingly often :/

The production is actually the best thing about it, but I find the melody really sickly. I know it's a late 90's ballad and that sort of thing was commonplace, but it just doesn't appeal to me at all.

Claire's vox are always fantastic, unless the song calls for something other than foghorning in which case Faye shone.

I was only just listening to 'You'll Be Sorry' about 10 minutes ago. The chorus is a killer, love it.

13. Here & Now - 7.08

UK #4 - 2001

The final one for today, it's the other side of You'll Be Sorry! Whatever my feelings are on that song, I don't feel that this is really any better. It's catchy I suppose but I wouldn't have chosen it as a single. I think it was put to shame by the likes of A*Teens' Upside Down which was in the chart at exactly the same time and doing the Euro bubblegum pop sound much better. However it hasn't fared badly at all here and gets an average of over 7!

How good are the charts of October 1998?- Probably the finest year of the 90s IMO.....

Agreed, I look back at them sometimes and realise that I frequently love 95% of the top 40, not just like but as in would still go out of my way to listen to it now.

I cannot believe Summer Of Love, Love's Got A Hold On My Heart (which is surely everything AWFUL about a Steps song rolled into one, bar the aforementioned lovely look of Faye), and above all else, f***in' STOMP have beaten (I actually put beating here at first, lol) Heartbeat :drama: Madness!

It's all about the bridges for me, love the melody on them and the underlying production, Claire as always is vocally fantastic on it too. Plus I have an instant yearning for anything from the last three months of 1998

THIS. I have to say I'm rather fond of Lisa's "but my feelings are in vain " bit for some reason (normally I can't STAND bloody LSL vocally but something about it is very endearing) before Claire literally SWOOPS in afterwards. But yeah, it's all about the nostalgia. It's also part of a killer string of pop tracks on Now 41 (5-12, am I the only one who loves that Culture Club song? I guess the UB40 song on Track 13 isn't bad but it's less good - although bizarrely I heard it in a restaurant last week which was strange! They were playing loads of other random, forgotten songs too...)

I actually think I underrated You'll Be Sorry a bit. Still, I doubt I'd have made much difference to its position, maybe one place at best!

Edited by superbossanova

Here & Now is definitely the lesser of that double a side, but it's still their 2nd best song for my money. Claire's utterly ludicrous ad libs on the album version are amazing, pity they're removed for the single version though.

Oh very dear, I had hoped the 11's might have been enough for it to have managed a decent placing. I know not everyone is as keen on it as me (favourite Steps song, top 20 of all time), but I was hoping for at least top 10.

It seemed to be very polarising. I expected it to be top five after all of the recent praise I've seen for it but it wasn't to be with all of the indifference. It's very Melodifestivalen-esque actually, perhaps they should have sent it to Eurovision! May 2001, perfect timing and all that...

It's not my favourite 90s ballad, far from it, but it did get to #39 in my top 40 of 1998 which is massively high praise considering how much I love that year. My top 100 from 1998 would be top 20 in most other years, seriously.

Is everyone familiar with the disco-strings-tastic WIP mix of You'll Be Sorry?

Nope actually! Is it on t'web anywhere?
