Posted September 23, 201113 yr ALMOST SATURDAY THREAD 23rd Sept 2011 plus a Pick Of The Pops anniversary tribute 50 years to the date (Saturday 23rd Sept 1961) when Alan Freeman took over "Pick Of The Pops" on the BBC Light Programme, tucked away in the Saturday Extravaganza called "Trad Tavern". Alan was the 4th host of the show, that started on Tuesday 4th October 1955, with Franklin Engleman in the chair, reviewing the new releases. It only went out fortnightly & no charts were featured. Alan Dell took over in Janaury 1956, & David Jacobs in September 1956. Alan Dell returned in September 1957, & started to feature some of the latest top singles, along with the New Releases. David Jacobs was back in March 1958, & then started to feature New Releases & the best of the top 20 chart, which was more or less David's own pick. For instance he never once played the record "La Dee Dah" by Jackie Dennis, despite it being a top 10 hit...So you thought Reggie Yates, is bad! David Jacobs did his final original show on 16th Sept 1961, though did return in the final 3 months of 1962. Alan Freeman's had 3 go's at the show...though was the longest serving host. He returned in January 1963, was replaced by Don Moss in September 1963, & then returned from January 1964 to September 1972, when the programme was axed. It reappeared in 1982 on Capital Radio as "Pick Of The Pops-Take Two", playing the London Top 15, back to back with an old chart. It moved to Radio One, as an oldies only show from 1989 - 1992 & later returned on Capital Gold as "Pick Of The Pops-Take Three" in 1994 & finally went to Radio 2 in April 1997. In between that lot, it was recreated as an oldies show on the Forces station BFBS Radio 1 between 1985 & 1991. Alan opened his first show in September 1961, with "Granada" by Frank Sinatra, which was actually the last song that David Jacob's played the previous week. Alan's first 14 weeks on the show were split into three, 20 minute segments. The first 2 played the new releases & the final 20 minutes, the current top 20 climbers. Alan's very first Top 20 looked like this: 20 12 QUARTER TO THREE - U.S. BONDS 18 16 HOW MANY TEARS - BOBBY VEE 18 NE YOU'LL ANSWER TO ME - CLEO LAINE 17 08 ROMEO - PETULA CLARK 16 09 HALFWAY TO PARADISE - BILLY FURY 15 11 THAT'S MY HOME - MR ACKER BILK 14 13 AIN'T GONNA WASH FOR A WEEK - THE BROOK BROTHERS 13 06 WELL I ASK YOU - EDEN KANE 11 19 HATS OFF TO LARRY - DEL SHANNON 11 15 TOGETHER - CONNIE FRANCIS 10 10 CUPID - SAM COOKE 09 07 MICHAEL ROW THE BOAT/LUMBERED - LONNIE DONEGAN 08 17 GET LOST - EDEN KANE 07 18 JEALOUSY - BILLY FURY 06 13 MICHAEL ROW THE BOAT - THE HIGHWAYMEN 05 05 REACH FOR THE STARS/CLIMB EV'RY MOUNTAIN - SHIRLEY BASSEY 04 04 KON TIKI - THE SHADOWS 03 02 YOU DON'T KNOW - HELEN SHAPIRO 02 03 WILD IN THE COUNTRY/FEEL SO BAD - ELVIS PRESLEY 01 01 JOHNNY REMEMBER ME - JOHN LEYTON John Leyton was on his 5th of 6wks at the top. Only half the chart was played & you didn't get to hear a top 20 rundown until January 1964...that's to say, not all the top 20 was even mentioned. The charts in the show were an almagamation of Melody Maker, Disc, & Record Mirror as there was no "Official Chart" until February 1969. There is some non chalant on the net trying to sell copies of these charts in book form...However don't buy them from him, as they are not the real Mccoy & fabricated and are very expensive at £8.95 a throw. Why should you line someone's pockets, as the try to cash in on this Anniversary week? Lets name & shame him...His name is David Armstrong & sometimes goes under the member name David 1956. Don't touch him with a barge pole, just smack him with it! Bang up to date. September 23, 201113 yr Surely the 'last week' position for Coldplay is just a guess though? This chart is not exactly massively accurate.
September 23, 201113 yr 05 05 REACH FOR THE STARS/CLIMB EV'RY MOUNTAIN - SHIRLEY BASSEY Is that just a massive coincidence, or did S Club 7 cover that song? :o I had no idea!
September 23, 201113 yr Author Is that just a massive coincidence, or did S Club 7 cover that song? :o I had no idea! S Club 7 single was just called "Reach" :P
September 23, 201113 yr S Club 7 single was just called "Reach" :P Yeah, but it has both the lyrics "Reach for the stars" and "Climb every mountain higher" in it! It turns out it wasn't a cover after all, but that's such a massive coincidence! :o Very strange.

And of course it was featured in the Sound Of Music later on. No connected with S Club 7.

Don't you find it a massive coincidence that it's "Reach for the stars (da da da da) Climb every mountain higher". That's the titles of the two Shirley Bassey songs, almost word for word, next to each other, and in order aswell! Edited September 23, 201113 yr by Eric_Blob

Maybe they were fans of The Sound Of Music...As Reach For The Stars goes "I Reach For The Stars, as reach I for your heart" or something. Then "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" is like "Climb Ev'ry Mountain, Walk ev'ry hillside". Two of the most awfully mind numbing songs you'd ever hear anyway....Some charts say it made #1, but it didn't really. Yeah, I've just listened to a bit of Reach for the Stars. Don't intend to again.
September 23, 201113 yr With Coldplay excluded from this chart, the #41 single 'Little Bad Girl' should manage another week in the T40 (according to this). I'd say Chris Brown / Justin Bieber are more likely to be a re-entry if anything, they did after all climb into the T40 on Wednesday. Everything else seems okay though, just a shame about Example and the Saturdays dropping so much. Sort of glad Damien Rice didn't re-peak too high really, it's annoying when these X-Factor/BGT songs begin dominating the charts.
September 24, 201113 yr Really hope Nicola Roberts can scrape top 40 tomorrow, if you remove Coldplay it looks possible. But I can see Chris and Justine passing her.
